As promised here is the first part of the Dana 30 Front Axle rebuild. Today I am going to show you how to properly take apart the entire axle assembly.
Thank you for that video, the job you did make looks really easy, but it is because you have experience hand , good tools, patience and excellent handling of camera. I have a cj5 1977.
Very well done video. Been looking for a complete tear down study and this was comprehensive. Very much appreciate the calm narration and experienced hand. Thank you!
Outstanding! Your timing is perfect. I just got one of my Dana 30's on the bench to tear down and rebuild. It's been 15 I have been trying to remember all steps and tools I need. 79 CJ5. She's a little rough around the edges. But, 27 years later. She is still my favorite. Thanks
I think you enlightened me into how to replace my ball joints on my Bronco... I was under the impression that i had to loosen that split nut first. would explain why dam near destroyed the Socket. now i know, next time i do upgrades I will have better plan.
@ 24:02 I noticed the typical markings of an “automotive recycler”, that explains the excessive rust. Thank you for another interesting video of the inner workings of the Jeep.
Alright metalshaper, you showed me the seal puller and I went over to e-bay and found a Snap-On seal puller and it is now on it's way thank you I seen it on e-bay and did not know I was going to need it but now that you showed me how to use one and where I was going to need it so thank you and I do not think my tool box is big enough so I got me another tool boy wile I was on e-bay and had my card out ..
1979 CJ5 rotor has been scoring the caliper bracket. I bought new replacement seal, cups and bearings in addition to the rebuild kit for the caliper and a new rotor. When I assemble it the rotor rubs on the bracket. The book diagram shows all the components but I am about 3/16" too close to the rotor when the caliper bracket is installed. What can you recommend next? I have pictures if you would tell me how to share them? BTW, Your videos are very well organized and I appreciate all the effort you put into explaining the differences between manufacture years and owners.
Hello. I have watched and enjoyed many of your videos. Thank You! Was wondering if you have a video of a pinion and carrier set up from “scratch”. I’m starting a CJ Dana 30 today and need to start from zero, no knowledge of past shim packs.
This is such a help! I"m tearing down my Dana 30 on my 80 CJ5. One I pull the axle shaft do I need to avoid getting water in the axle? I'd like to wire wheel, prime, and repaint it after replacing the ball joints but I don't want to take apart the entire axle.
I'm just now revisiting the various Jeep CJ axle videos to refresh my memory and get info. On your Dana 30 is it an open differential? I was just thinking that the manual locking hubs are pointless if one wheel isn't driven by the diff. gears. I have an 80 CJ7 and as far as I know it's original except for one of the manual hubs was changed before I got it over 20 years ago.
Would you know the number of the spindle puller? Amazon has three listed. From what I read in the description the OTC (7502) 4WD Front Spindle Puller should work on the Jeep CJ's
What is the brand of the threaded seal remover you have? I'm trying to find an old one on eBay but I can't find one. Not sure what to look for. Thanks!
Hay thanks for trying to address the issue I’m having with the Dana 53 but it is the cup on the pinion towards the ring gear the hole machined in the rear is to small to do what you suggest there must be a puller of some type for this cup and I can’t find it I am getting upset with this build I got a sand blaster the air compressor it not big enough I got a blast cabinet it requires modified I got blasting media it won’t flow I bought panels they are requiring a lot of modifications I can sand blast so I can prime and weld in patch panels I have been trying to get this rusted rear apart for 3 months I order pullers wait to see if they work no body gives sizes then I have to figure out what to order and how to put it together and it last
Hey man I’ve got one of these I’m stripping right now and the split rings are stuck in the top of the knuckle housing and the teeth are pretty chewed up. If anyone has any advice to get it out can you drop it here?
I have Spicer style drive shafts in my GPW, there's been no snap rings fitted to the axle end. Luckily not much damage has been caused to the axle Bush (which I believe isn't needed anyway). But once the shafts are fitted, how many shims need to go in the spline flange?
Install a Flanged Bushing in your spindle, and then put the shaft in, then your hub and snap ring. No shims are needed on Spicer style axle shafts. You must install a flanged bushing in your spindle for them to work correctly.
powder coating is not a good option for axles. Epoxy primer and urethane paint is the best way to go . Save the powder coating for interior parts only.
My cj7 has left front wheel sticking out more when compared to left rear. Any idea why? I'm new to cj7s. Maybe they have a common fault. Seems like axle needs to be shifted to the right but it's already maxed out to the right
Not sure exactly what you are dealing with there. Are you working on a CJ7 with narrow or wide track axles? maybe you have a combination of them. Need more info on year and width of axles.
Hi . At 5:25 the spring that came out. Does that spring come with the hub assembly? If not what is it called and where can I purchase it from? Thank you for the detailed video.
yes the spring is part of the free wheeling hub assembly. It will be in your hub and if you need a replacement you need to contact your hub manufacturer.
I just showed how to make a tool and get the spindle bushing out on Facebook. facebook.com/profile.php?id=100035977323409 check out this link to my page and scroll down to 3 August 2019 and you will see the process of how to make the tool and how to use it. Brian
