I recently had some issues with my CJ5's ignition system. The jeep would just die randomly after it warmed up. It would start back up after it cooled. I decided to replace the entire ignition system to resolve the issue. The ignition controller ended up being the issue but I'm replacing everything regardless.
Steps in the video:
1. Finding top dead center or TDC by manually rotating the crank pully with a wrench
2. Removing, installing and aligning an HEI distributor
3. Installing new spark plug wires and connecting to MSD ignition module
Next steps I'll work on timing the new distributor and then headers and exhaust so Like and Subscribe!

You addressed the issue I'm concerned about. The drive gear. I'm just now looking into this swap. You'd think the HEI would come with the correct gear already. I can do the gear swap like you, assuming the new HEI I buy has the same dimensions on it's components (distributor shaft dia. etc.). There are several options on the market today from low cost models to high dollar ones.

Yeah, there’s a lot of posts online where people have chewed up their gears. I’m sure a quick call to the manufacturer’s customer service line would of helped but switching them out was pretty easy as well.

Sure as long as the new distributor shaft is dimensionally the same as the factory AMC it's just a matter of drifting out a roll pin probably.

Installed one 2 years ago. Measure all the od's perfect fit. Used the old gear, smeared assembly lube. No issues, I was going to pull it out and look at it, but haven't yet,lol.

I was a victim of listening to the sales rep when i did my upgrade. He said, "o yeh, the dizzy gear will be a match to your cam gear". Well, like a dummy i installed and less than 500 miles i now have the timing cover off waiting for my new matched set of gears. I knew better but i listened to a "pro". Nice job on your install.
@thehobbymechanic47
@thehobbymechanic47 4 года назад
Well that sucks! You can turn the negative into a positive by upgrading the cam while you're in there?

@@thehobbymechanic47 Yes, i am planning on it. I thought of just going for some noise such as a thumper cam. I have a couple of decent fast cars so i just putt around in the Jeep.

I’ll need to do the same eventually. I replaced my fuel pump a little while ago and noticed that the timing chain was pretty loose. Might as well kill 2 birds with one stone as well.

you know what eats up camshaft timing gears? oil pumps, if you are making more than 45 psi you have high oil pressure and this will wear down the timing gear quickly, had my oil pressure at 70 psi after replacing the front timing cover and oil pump assembly, it ran about 10 minutes before stripping off. then my stupid butt learned how to adjust the oil pressure.

I have the same jeep with a 304. My OEM distributor crapped out and i am considering the same upgrade and need some direction. What HEI distributor did you install? is there any special wiring, does it just connect to the existing ignition module? Thanks in advance!
@thehobbymechanic47
@thehobbymechanic47 3 года назад
I installed the MSD 8519 pro-billet distributor in this vid. I also installed an MSD 6201 ignition module and MSD 8203 Blaster 2 coil (and MSD wires) so I have a new/complete ignition system. A new module and coil will set you back an additional $300 so it might be a good opportunity to just upgrade the whole system. I don't think you'll get the full benefit of upgrading the distributor if you don't upgrade the rest. I outline the wiring and the install for the ignition in another video. The instructions that come with the module are pretty straight forward.

Was your factory distributor a 1 wire? My 76 CJ7 has the 401 in it and the previous owner hacked and slashed the ignition system, I assume to bypass the ignition module. One wire disty goes to one side of the coil and the other side of the coil comes out of the harness 12v.
@thehobbymechanic47
@thehobbymechanic47 2 года назад
This motor had an upgraded ignition system when I got it so I’m not sure what the factory distributor was. I was t aware you could bypass the control module. Interested in how that works.

Hello, Thanks for the Video. Question did you leave the voltage regulator on ? or disconnect it ? I am having problems with my 1975 Jeep Cherokee S. The dude that did the install disconnect both the Old stock Electric ignition box & Voltage Regulator. So far I have had to replace the Alternator, Battery, and waiting for a new HEI ICM. I wonder what else I need to get ? I believe it's my fault for not checking the voltage regulator ? Thanks a little help please.
@thehobbymechanic47

I left the original voltage regulator as is. I only installed the MSD ignition controller, MSD distributor and MSD coil. I ensured all the wiring/grounds were per the instructions.

Why did you need to spin the oil pump? If the HEI was virtually a direct replacement, shouldn't the oil pump already be in the correct orientation?
@thehobbymechanic47

Good question. Not sure I can give you a good answer. I've replaced a few distributors and they all replace about the same.

At 8 and something minutes, what exactly were you rotating a little bit? mine acts exactly like yours did until you rotated whatever? Thanks!

Looks like you just rotated the distributor some

That’s what I did. I loosened the distributor locking bolt and rotated the distributor. The timing was off a bit.

Is the roll pin in this Dist., Tapered -directional or a basic straight piece? I’m needing to go this too, yet trying to find out. Also, I looked at CRT-Dist., and the DUI-Dist., looks the same yet three times as much. Any recommendations on pro/con either one. I’m not certain if those “composite or melonized" type Dist., gears “ are available for the AMC engine. thx
@thehobbymechanic47
@thehobbymechanic47 4 года назад
The pin was straight and easy to change. Just make sure you secure the dist so you don't drop it or smash it when your trying to hammer the pin out. I'm not entirely sure the difference between the dist you listed. If you want big hp numbers or high RPM's out of your motor you might want to go with the bigger more known brands but for most implementations you can't go wrong with either brands I assume.
@thehobbymechanic47
@thehobbymechanic47 4 года назад
I checked some forums and folks had nothing but good experiences with the CRT dist so I wouldn't be worried if you wanted to go that route. Just depends on your implementation.

@@thehobbymechanic47 You may also find that in hot weather it can overheat with no shroud. It's not pulling enough air through the radiator. Having the fan spaced from the radiator makes it worse. I know this from experience.
