Got an original dash in your CJ? Is it uncut? Well, I've got a great option for you and I'll show you how to install it. At least the install parts that were the most complicated for me to figure out. Gives a great, almost OEM, look to your CJ without breaking the bank.

in my '86 CJ7 I had installed a cheaper "retro" stereo head unit a few years back really for just FM radio. No blue tooth or connectivity to my smart phone and the internal amplifier chips were very weak. Recently installed a blue tooth amp mounted under the back seat. Head unit disconnected and I run Pandora/I tunes directly via blue tooth from phone to system. The only lose is local FM stations but no big deal. So much better quality sound!

I plan to evetually add a subwoofer and an amp for it, but the power is more than capable for the 4 1/2 dash speakers. They are 50w a piece.

I got a 1983 to bad I cant post pics on comments well I'm making some videos to so a few months I'll have some up I'm doing quite bit on it . Ur jeep Project looks great . On mine I've gone in and removed all of the vacuum controlled ignition and unnecessary vacuum and computer-controlled carburetor but I chose to keep things like the EGR valve recirculating the exhaust gases back into the manifold I think you kept yours too if I saw correctly I know you have lots of videos help me some to along the way for sure. Thanks documenting this information for the preservation of Jeep restoration and repairs off into the future for other generations to come Cheers to JEEPs especially CJs

Not a bad sounding radio. I enjoy that your upgrading while keeping it looking original. Manson is awesome but by far the best song to rock out to while driving a Cj is dancing in the dark by Bruce Springsteen. Perfect for the 1980's Vibe.

Thanks for vid Cool Guy. I am planning to install the Retrosound Hermosa radio as well as it is close to factory look and a good radio. PO molested my dash for standard DIN size so currently refurbing back to original radio cut size with post holes.

Excellent. That can be a tough thing to do. Be careful if you're welding the 18 gauged metal back in. The dash panel will warp easily with too much heat. I learned from a past experience.

Hope the video helped. There are a couple other radios on the market like this one, but I felt that the simplicity and the price were right for what I wanted to do.

Would've been a little more problematic if Brittany Spears was the first song played on the new stereo.

hey coolguy, bought what i believe to be the exact same radio from the the same website and plan to do the install soon. I have a 1978 CJ7 GoldenEagle with the exact same specs you listed at the end. Only problem is my fusebox is no longer usable in any way shape or form. My dad beat on and molested this jeep over 20 years ago and left it sitting in an un enclosed building for 20 more. I have spent the better part of 3 years rebuilding it piece by piece and have had to rewire everything i use nearly straight to the battery and this radio will be much the same. Wiring it straight to the battery is half the battle i know, but the part about the key switch turning it on is the part I am lost about. Any ideas? could i just wire it to a toggle switch?
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 4 года назад
Probably. The problem with not using the fuse box is the power from the battery is controlled by the ignition switch. I guess you could wire it straight to the battery and just use the power button to turn it off and on. You will need to wire in an in-line fuse (probably 10 amps) so you don't blow the whole thing up. If you do go this route, please let me know the results. I'm curious to see how it works.
@caseystrickland6662
@caseystrickland6662 4 года назад
@@coolguy_CJ7 excellent i was thinking the same with the fuse. much appreciated. ill let you know how it works out. i already have my speakers and antennae wired and ready, just waiting on the radio.
@caseystrickland6662
@caseystrickland6662 4 года назад
@@coolguy_CJ7 update on the radio- works great. A pain trying modify it to run from the battery alone, but got it finished. The wiring harness it came with already has a 15A fuse in it on the yellow and black wires (constant and ground). The red one (ignition) has a 15A that i put on it under the hood where i ran the wire. Just two speakers so no problems there. My only wonder is if its going to kill my battery with it being on (radio off, with clock display on) constantly.

Those connectors are they ATO power tap connectors?

Hey Cool Guy, I’m planning to install the same stereo in my CJ7. Did you add any inline fuses? If so any recommendations for a car wiring newbie?
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 3 года назад
Nope. Just straight up install. Worked great. Follow the instructions and it should be very straight forward.

Thanks for this! I had this installed in my ‘83 Laredo, but they used the accessories fuse which also has the cigar lighter wired to it. Now the cigar lighter blows the fuse when engaging and turns off the stereo. I bought connector plugs for the factory radio thinking I could repurpose that fuse for the lighter.. would that be your suggestion? Can’t figure out the amperage on that original radio plug.
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 3 года назад
Can you switch the wire to the radio fuse in the fuse box? You can get the plugs for it here. www.americanautowire.com/shop/connector-terminal-kit-ato-fuse-box
@mjmastio
@mjmastio 3 года назад
@@coolguy_CJ7 Thanks for the reply! Yes we’re on the same page. I bought those same plugs and am just going to run cigar lighter to factory radio plug. Question is what is the amp load on that plug? The other plugs have labels but these ones don’t. Thanks again!
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 3 года назад
Good question. According to my diagram, 3 amp for the CLK plug, 10 amp for the RADIO plug, CRUISE plug, and the one above the cruise plug. The CLOCK is a 20 amp fuse.

Just found this video. Are those original in dash speakers? If not where did you get oem replacements? Thank you!
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 2 года назад
Couldn’t find OEM speakers, plus 40 year old speakers probably wouldn’t hold up very long. Went with the Rockford Fosgate R1525X2 from Crutchfield.

@@coolguy_CJ7 Thank you! Just looking for something that will fit behind the dash speaker grates, like the OEM which I still have. My radio/cassette has power but no sound. Figured I’d replace both speakers and move up to that Hermosa model I linked above that offers as an option a radio JEEP approved faceplate to give an even more authentic look.

@@coolguy_CJ7 I must have confused you. My speakers are OEM as far as I know. My old radio is not OEM, just an old Sanyo . If I left you with the idea the radio is OEM, I’m sorry.

@@CJ-rk5eg No problem. Upgrading to the Bluetooth radio is really nice. I’m going to put one in my 79, which only has one dash speaker. Have to figure out how to wire it up. Please keep me updated.

Can you connect 6 speakers to that radio?
@coolguy_CJ7
@coolguy_CJ7 4 года назад
There are only 4 ports coming out of the back of the radio. If you're going to run 6 you'll need to connect an amp anyway. I would then run the 4 "back" speakers from there.
