I have a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L Hemi engine. I hadn't worked on the engine before, just brakes all around and a driver's side window motor. I watched this video twice and went for it. The video was a big help. All went well. I got a chance to use my new 1/4 inch air ratchet as well to remove the coil packs. Many thanks!

I just bought a 2009 jeep commander in QATAR. I am planning to change the spark plugs today. Your video made me realize what a hard work I have in front of me and how many tools i will have to buy. I could go to a garage to do this, but after watching this video it boost my confidence.

He knows his stuff. He's been around for some time. There's just been a ton of smear campaign about anti-sieze as consequence of people WAY over doing it.

That explanation regarding antiseize is exactly what I have been thinking, as well. I use a small dab, and I am careful not to overtorque. The rust was impressive!

Thanks. I like to do a job once and then hear from the owners friends wanting work done on their cars. Call backs due to my mistakes jack up the schedule as I give them #1 priority. Therefore I don't want any errors PERIOD!

never had any problem anti seize on spark plug and the fact we use it on Aircraft engines and to eliminate the contamination on the electrode just put anti seize few thread back before the electrode so no anti seize will drop in any cylinder :)

Brian I am always impressed with the care you take when working on cars and how methodical you are. This is why I like using good independent shops. I think it's too bad that flat rate often turns good techs into mediocre ones.

Thanks! It's because I got a nicer camera. My old videos bear comments complaining endlessly of poor lighting and that people couldn't see anything. So, I did something to fix it. ; )

the bolts are threaded thru the coil pack so you dont drop them. loosen coil pack bolts enough to just get off the head. theyll stay in the coil pack, preventing u from dropping them

grease will cause the plug to seize , brian is correct in what he is doing . i have been working as a mechanic 20 years and never had a problem . brian is a top notch mechanic . every vid he ever post was accurate

I like when you make reference to bolt thread and pitch sizes. As a machinist it is a pet peeve of mine when mechanics think that the size of the hex head is the bolt size.
@briansmobile1
@briansmobile1 11 лет назад
I can definitely see where he's coming from- people used to use way too much and it was pushed at the parts counter to the extreme- especially at Autozone. Since then, there's been a push in the other direction that has nearly made a witch hunt of the topic. In marketing some one is always trying to make a buck through fear one way or another. I don't get a Christmas Card from Permatex, but I'd hate to see them quit making Anti-seize too.

Hey i just wanted to mention the hemi name come from a hemispherical combustion chamber in the cylinder head. but you were on the right track the head in concave and the piston is convex... What a wild set up with 16 spark plus though ive never seen that except on top fuel dragsters with magnetos.. great video Brian
@RMosher11
@RMosher11 11 лет назад
Yes I have read much the same about the third gen Hemi. They also don't use a true Hemispherical combustion chamber but more of a pent roof design. Along with the twin plugs help it quite a bit in my understanding.

Out of passing interest, almost all (reciprocating) aircraft engines have used 2 plugs per cylinder since the stone age. Mostly for reliability, with two completely independent ignition systems. But there is a slight performance advantage as well. Some old time big radials like the P&W 4360 had 28 cylinders, or 56 plugs per engine. If you had 4 engines, that was a mere 224. The spruce Goose ran 8 4360's for 448 plugs! Those aircraft plugs aren't cheap, and were easy to accidentally 'load up'.
@BigHappysPlace
@BigHappysPlace 7 лет назад
An old trick I use when I have over tight plugs. Start the engine and let it run for about 4 to 5 minutes. shut it down and the plugs come out like butter... It's similar to what one would do with a torch on a rusted bolt.
@briansmobile1
@briansmobile1 11 лет назад
That's awesome! I was looking at pictures of one of the engines of that B-25 that crashed in March 1955 and noticed all the cylinder heads it had.

Agreed on the use of anti seize! A little goes a long way. Question would be, why are they using dissimilar metals? Strength? I like your level headed approach with common sense added as a bonus! That is how I approach things in the office machine environment but with that said I get paid per mile so I need to keep my auto's up to speed...
@carloscarrillo6493
@carloscarrillo6493 2 года назад
You don't use anti seize compound on spark plugs. Use or brush milk of magnesia. Which is what we use on Aircraft engine spark plugs. It will protect them from corrosion and they come out like butter even after 5 years of engine operation at 1800 degrees.

Working on aircraft is nice... quality stuff to the bone. You need whats called an 'A&P' (Airframe & Powerplant) license to do so, and there are training programs all over the US. Go googling. Also search on 'AMT' (Aviation Maintenance Technician) programs. The FAA web site has loads of info as well, including tons of training materials free for the downloading... check it out. The flip side of A/C work, is that you have to sign off legally on everything you touch. Google that aspect as well.

Hey Brian, when i suspect plugs have been in engine for awhile or might be diffucult to remove, i shoot a little PB blaster down the wells let it soak for 10 min then ill loosen 1 full turn and leave them another 5 minutes while pb blaster soaks down the threads. thanks again for the awesome videos you produce.

LOL I've been a Mercedes Benz tech for around 8 years now my bottle of anitseize lasted me since the first day I started as a tech entire seize doesn't hurt it depends on. The amount. You out of. The threads you don't need to put a dollop of it on the plug its just a little dab will do and as you turn to tighten it spreads around

@hashdfw

Anti-seize shouldn't hurt the engine if a little got into the cylinder. The reason it works is it's actually a combination of grease and some finely ground glass. After running the motor the grease burns off leaving the glass particles between the threads and the block, which won't melt and engine temperatures. The glass keeps the dissimilar metals separated enough that the don't seize. Anyway if a little gets into the cylinder the grease will burn and the glass will work its way out the exhaust or make it to the oil

or you can eliminate all concern, and apply the anti-sieze 1/2 way up the thread away from the end you gap. A bit up away from the end of the threads closest to the combustion chamber

Hello sir, are you still active? Got one of these (‘07 Overland) and I don’t think the spark plugs have been changed out in oh well over 80k miles, last time was at the dealership so probably over torqued like you say, likely seized up. Dealership now wants $800 for spark plug change in 2020. Do I try to do it myself? Or is it time to get rid of the car? Car would probably fetch $1500-2000 if anything, so definitely not willing to shell out $800 on a spark plug job...

This is something I'd expect from BMW but at least access isn't horrible like on the late 90's blazers where you have to rotate the engine or remove the steering shaft to get to #3. I always use a rag to smear the little dab of anti seize over the threads to make sure any excess doesn't get on the tip of the plug or anywhere I don't want it so there's a nice even coat over the threads.

Antiseize is not to be used on plugs especially newer plugs, they are made with a coating/plating that acts or gives the same results of antiseize. Plus it messes with torque values. Worked at 2 dealerships where we got notices stating the facts and no longer would we use antiseize on plugs, antiseize is great but not on everything.
