One of the most entertaining and hilarious SMA videos ever. Of course it was presented with utmost respect to Mrs O. And damn well should have been! Child birth experience reminds me of a place and time long ago when a young Vietnamese woman was giving birth in a muddy ditch. 5 very young combat G.I.’s learned very quickly the value of innocent life and the happiness we gave to that lovely young little mom. We were kids just like her. I’m 74 now, I pray that little girl and her mom are happy and healthy,
The SMA starter motor monologue is pure quality entertainment. Like having a beer with a friend while they do a job they really don't want to do. Classic. Loved it.
Right? Reminds me of my uncle, when in town we always go to his shop and hang around him just for the entertainment value of his conversation while he's doing a set of brakes or rebuilding a transmission.
"When I saw the Saint Bernard come in through the cat door..." That may be the most frighteningly vivid and apt description of childbirth I've ever heard. And it took an SMA video to do it. 😁😁😁😁
Eric, I’ve got ADHD pretty badly. Watching your videos helps me 1) realize that I’m not alone in the constant, rambling, meandering internal dialogue and 2) see what I must look like to other people. Great as always!
You see, this is why i've been subscribed for years now, not only do you learn a lot from your video's, you get a bloody good laugh at the same time! Never change please.
I thought the same exact thing when my first child was born!!!! I was like oh that's a tiny head, then all of a sudden, BAM, whole big head pops out!!!!
3yrs ago and just as valid. After removing the throttle body I found that grabbing wires to the starter, pushing it backwards away from the flywheel and then tilting it up and out, worked easily. The old starter looked so rough it was ready to retire. The parts desk took the old one. The new starter was just under $100. Thanks again. I'm getting ready to change the rear drum brakes on this 2008 Heap Compass. And underneath the engine there is a bar where the engine mount sits. I have this new part. Watching your videos 10X or more and I feel like I'm ready to crawl under this thing, but I'm getting too fat. It's like a walrus moving up and down a beach. Happy birthday to your 3yo. Can you grab me a part the next time you're at the yard?
"Clean as a whistle" comes from the days of steam trains. The locomotive got filthy from all of the smoke, oil and road grime. The exception was the whistle as with each blow the whistle would be steam cleaned.
idk if this maybe popularized the phrase, but wiki says its been used since the 1700s, and derives from how clear and pure a sound whistling is. beginning as clear as a whistle, transferring into clean as a whistle.
@broomsterm google says comes from beheadings with a sword. A good swing, resulting in a clean cut, caused the sword to create a "whistling" sound as it cut through the air.
My friend, you crack me up. I know people hang around for your one liners and stories. The birth experience story was awesome. Poor Vanessa. I respect her more now. I completely forgot what I came here for now.
Things that have been left in my cars, Screwdriver (left inside door when dealer fixed electric window took a ride from SF to SD should have charged for a dealer transfer), a hook or pick, an OBD II scanner.
I found a snap on ratchet stuck in a fender once. I’ve also found a few screwdrivers and small tools. Usually I try to return them if it’s a truck from a place that does most of their own work. I figure it’s good in the hopes the stuff I loose returns. The best is a light I lost for over a month. It was found when the truck came back for a service. Was still stuck to the bottom. Charged it up and works fine.
Everyone i've ever met from the finger lakes area has the same sense of humour as Eric O.........just excellent people . I used to deliver in North Rose four days a week , beautiful place .
Great video Eric. I ordered a set of Mac hard handle screw drivers for ya. 8 piece set. I should be getting them from my Mac guy on Wednesday. Then I will send them out or drive down on Saturday to deliver them.
Changed my started alone (first time) all thanks to this video! I just had a hard time focusing on how to take the starter off and then back on or the story 😂
Worked on an old large ford sedan several years ago that overheated, had eleven out of a possible eleven coolant leaks and leaky valve covers. Got it all fixed, ran the engine to test for leaks and overheating in their driveway. They heard it running, came out all happy. Went to road test and........the battery quit. They weren't happy at that, but it was obvious the battery was old. One new battery and they were happy again. Mr. O. you did a great job, even cleaned the Neg cable end and post.
Hey Eric, greetings from Arizona! This morning I used what I've learned from your videos to diagnose and fix an exposed wire that was shorting and repeatedly blowing a fuel injector circuit fuse on my '05 Deville. Just thought you might like to know you helped someone today. Much appreciated!
Eric, you have an awesome gift of gab! Really enjoy listening to you when you are working by yourself. You did not strike me as an unlawful character when I met you. Ross
Bob Lutz, during the "cab forward days" at Chrysler, used to say that the engine compartment wasn't packed tight enough if it took less than a week for a bucket of water to drain through.
@@skip7243 and compare that to these fancy new cars, friend of a friend had an expensive foreign sports car and he had to actually pull the engine out just to change the oil!
That's why I love my Holden Calais. 2004, Buick 3800, rear wheel drive, limited slip diff, simple as can be. You can also see the ground on three sides, and climb into the engine bay with barely anything removed. It's such a dream to work on.
Hopefully the customer watches the video and sees the problem and the good honest work you do. I can only dream of South Main Auto moving into my area.
Best part of any SMAR video is when Eric pretends to talk to the camera and is really having a conversation with himself. Makes me feel right at home listening. Nice job being able to reach AND see the bolts. Usually one or the other. Thanks for sharing.
My '88 Cherokee's starter crapped out right in my garage once. Had a junkyard NAPA starter, put it in and it works fine. It's easy to reach on the 4-liter straight six.
@@8avexp Yeah, but unfortunately, that has nothing in common with today's Mercedes and Fiat designed Jeeps. Chrysler makes nothing but junk now, and it is not even their fault.
your stories were well worth the video so much ... that i didnt really watch the r&r of the starter!!!! YOU SIR ARE A TRUE MAD MAN!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL !!!!! and yes ive had days like this my self!!!! been mechanic for 48yrs. KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey EricO, I always look forward to your videos because of your lil bit of crazy chit-chat and the fact you are an honest man, which is a rare thing in the auto repair industry! Learned a lot, thanks.
Thoughtful, insightful, intelligent, funny , and unassuming conversation while you were fixing the clients car. Just saying , was a nice relaxing 45 min of my time spent after a long days work. Thank you...
I've been watching SMA for over four years now. I missed this one. One of the funniest I've ever seen! I'm glad that Y-Tube is throwing these older videos in my feed!! Priceless!! 😆😆😆 I hope Mrs. O doesn't watch your videos! 😳🤪🤪
I have a 2010 Dodge with the 2.0L version of that engine, and my power steering lines rotted out a few months ago. I guess I'll be doing a starter in the not-too-distant future too, but now I have an excellent video showing me how to take care of it. Also enjoyed the family stories as well. Thanks for posting this vid Sarah! :D
Wow... "watching a St Bernard coming through the cat door" There you have it folks, the birthing process through the eyes of EricO. Lol. Giving birth to my daughter wasn't quite so bad. Awesome story telling this video, Eric! 😂😂😂
Can't remember who it was to give it proper credit (think it was a female comic years ago) describing the process as squeezing a watermelon through a hole the size of a lemon.
Hey mister oh, really like your videos. I also like the fact that you just don't shotgun parts as part of your Diagnostics. I've been a service advisor at a high-end dealership for pretty close to 30 years and I've seen a lot of silly stuff go on in the shop. Keep doing what you doing man!
Another "educational" video. Loved to hear about your wilder youth. 😂 When I was 18, I had a Ford Cortina MkV, with a 2.0 engine with a 5 speed manual transmission and rear wheel drive. I was with my friends one Saturday night and we were doing burnouts on the promenade in Kirkcaldy, a major town near to where I live. I had my then girlfriend, Claire, in the car and I did this super long, crazy burnout. When the smoke cleared, a Fife Police BMW 5 series was right behind me with his blue strobes flashing. My pals had seen it but I roared off before they had a chance to tell me. The passenger got out of the police car and approached my window. He looked in the car and saw his daughter, my girlfriend, in the passenger seat. He motioned for her to get out and go to their car. I got a very stern talking to about road safety and basically got off with a warning but a condition of it was that I broke up with Claire. The end of a beautiful relationship. 😂
Welcome to SMA comedy hour with Eric O.! 🤣🤣 I bet ya that Mrs. O's ears were burning! Hey, ding dong, did ya hook up that evap hose? I didn't see ya do it on the video. Just kitten ya! 😁 Spoke at ya later, come on. 😎
Hi Sarah I mean Eric Like you I’m super busy at the shop Everybody is stuck home so they think they can drop them off and come back 2 weeks later. LOL I’m out 2 weeks on repairs. So life is good. Be safe my friend and give the family lots of hugs and kisses 😘
With how most people treat their cars, I've definitely felt like I was being put on the spot with some of the heaps I've done oil changes on. So, how far am I supposed to go with a "free" inspection?
@Jo Blow Mechanics have to eat too ya know! And on the bill at bottom "Shop Supplies" 1- pair new green rubber gloves $12.00! lol just kiddn around here.. haha!
I only scammed a shop once by accident, I got something fixed and I went back the next day to fix something else. And they forgot what they worked on but remembered me and fixed it free of charge and the owner chewed out the mechanic for not checking his work. That's on the list of the worst things I have ever done.
I pulled you up for the first time, as a woman that doesn't work on cars I am curious to see what it takes to replace a starter. I do own a Jeep Compass, and believe that I need to replace my starter. Doing my research now, on cost of part, and labor. Love your story telling, although I get the impression you could have been a good doctor, due to your desire to know how things work, and fix them. So many parts to remember. WOW.
Get you a 90’s Camry with the four banger. Starter is sitting right on top. You could do the entire job on that car in less time than it takes you to watch this video.
A few years ago I had to change the starter on my wife's 2010 Journey with the same engine. My friend (also a seasoned mechanic like yourself) told me I had to remove the intake manifold to get to it. Did it just the way you did, and had no issue removing the old and installing the new one. Great video!
I can imagine Eric standing there with nitrile gloves, a roll of shop towels and a can of Brakleen, confidently telling his wife that he's ready to deliver the baby.
Eric.. You are actually lucky that you documented the actual tear down and repair on video and you showed the brittle copper braid falling apart... No magic tricks... The starter was ready to fail and it just happened on your watch... No foul or deception...All He has to do is watch the video... Dave
Thank you for the thorough process and good conversation. Your video was the most helpful. By the way it was Adam Sandler who was in the movie Click. God bless you.
I think Eric has a tattoo that says 'Scotland Forever'. That SC impression was perfect. Eric, Great video and fix - thank you! SMA#1 God bless Paul (in MA)
Knowing I need to spend a lot to get my starter replaced sucks. Watching this very enjoyable video, just out of curiosity, definitely has improved my mood.
Damn Eric sounds like you had a long day! I had to explain to my wife that even though her water pump failed and I replaced it and the timing belt, it had nothing to do with the clutch slave cylinder that failed on literally the exact next journey she took the car on...I had to pay for that in a few ways haha
Sitting here getting over the covid and feeling like crap. Wife and I watched this video and laughed our asses off all the way through it. thank you for makin my day. Honest, talented, and funny mechanics are hard to find.
I had to laugh Eric when you wedged your battery ratchet removing that bolt, because i did the same darn thing when i first did one of those starters, lol .
Thanks for the stories about your popo experience. Buuut...I cannot imagine Mrs. O ever doing anything like you mentioned. She seems to much of an Angel 😇.
