This is a video walk through of how to upgrade to larger brakes on your Jeep Dana 30 axle. This brake kit will work for 15 inch wheels. In my case the wheels in the video are 15 inch aluminum Raceline Monster beadlocks.
Here is a link to the original post, created by CobraMarty, that discusses this upgrade. www.cherokeefo...

Excellent write up. I just finished this conversion on my '86 XJ. If anyone else is doing this note that as far as the XJ is concerned there are 3 wheel bearing options. The 1984-1989(?), the 1990(?)-1999, and 1999-2001 bearings. Since mine is a 1986 with a 1985 axle for the 4x4 conversion I have the phase one bearings. Due to the offset of those bearings I didn't need any washers or other shims to line up the calipers. So if you are doing this brake upgrade use the early bearings, and grab a 1996 XJ booster for any 1984-1995 for a dual diaphragm upgrade (or you can use a 1996 GM Astro hydro boost unit). 4.6L @ 9.2:1 and a 68-232-4 cam, AX15 + NP242, D30HP + F8.8 Trac loc @ 3.55 on 225/75R16.

Just did this on my 89 Xj, Dana 30 version without the vacuum disconnect. For me there was no need to grind the hub assembly to make the rotor fit as mentioned on the Cobra Marty post on Cherokee Forum. This may be because I also used the Motorcraft rotors or because there are some variations in the bearing as mentioned in another comment. Also no shim washers needed for me, the bracket was only off center by about 1.5mm without them. Plenty of clearance on my Pro Comp steel rims (15x8 with 3.75 backspacing). I did have to grind a tiny bit at the top corner of the caliper where there is slight interference with the knuckle but that was it. For rotors, if you go with Motorcraft as in this video the BRR236 is now superseded by the BRRC105. I thought I was sent the wrong rotors but later confirmed with a Ford dealer that the BRRC105 is the new version. They worked just fine and an added bonus is that these these are coated rotors. The assembly itself seems solid. As for how they work, I can't say yet, I'm running the stock booster and master cylinder and they were terrible before this. Still researching upgrade options for those. The DIY big brake was step 1 of 2. I'll come back here to update for anyone trying this.

How has this held up for you? I did the 17” setup that cobramarty talked about on those old posts and I’ve had problems. I’m thinking since the knuckle setup is the same for both that maybe I’ll try this.

@@HeBeGB501 after I wrote this last night I was scrutinizing my situation for the 100th time. I was looking at photos and my knuckles (which the wrecking yard pulled) look slightly different than any photos of 84-89 I can find. They mount up fine but the calipers don’t center correctly. So, that’s where I’m at been messing with this for 2 years now...

Frankenstain 4x4, The knuckles are the original ones. They have been modified by drilling out the tierod mount to run heims and to run the tierod on top of the knuckle. The passenger side also has a crossover steering bracket mounted to it.

Weren't the knuckles on the Dana 30 from 87 to 98 the same? I have looked at online and the junk yard they all uses the same knuckles. Trying to do exactly what you did and the only knuckles that even cone close to fit those calipers are from the WJ but even those are 1/2 inch off from bolt hole to bolt hole. Did we miss something or are you running a special knuckles? We have read over that from about a dozen times now and the parts we ordered dont seem to line up.
@HeBeGB501
@HeBeGB501 3 года назад
The older knuckles have a separate caliper bracket that the factory calipers bolt to. That bracket bolts to the knuckles. This is the bracket that I am removing @1:50 in the video. You then drill out the holes in the knuckle, where that bracket mounted, to fit these new calipers. The later knuckles have the caliper bracket integrated into them. If the knuckles that you got don’t have the separate caliper bracket, they are likely later model knuckles.

@@HeBeGB501 🤔 The only thing we can come up with is maybe the 87-89 XJ Dana 30 would be different. Very few came with the Dana 44 in the rear and maybe the front axle on those xj's were different also. The JK knuckles will almost bolt right up with those calipers. I guess it's back to the drawing board unless someone eles knows something about these axles that we don't. Trying to stop a 5.3 Yj with an atlas and 4.56 gears on a Dana 30 is not exactly ideal. 🤣🤣🤣

To my knowledge this swap doesn’t require that you swap the master cylinder. I was, however, already running the booster and master cylinder out of a WJ series Grand Cherokee.

I believe the Dana 30’s that were in CJ’s have different knuckles. I am also not sure that you would be able to swap the XJ knuckles over due the different ball joint setup. With those differences, I wouldn’t think that this particular swap would work for your axle. There are probably other setups that would work though.
