In this video, I go through the process of installing the new AMP Research Power Steps XL onto my 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon in preparation for my 4.5" Skyjacker Lift & 39" BFG Tires :) The install process was quite involved and took me literally ALL day on a Saturday to get this project knocked out; however, the end result, well worth it!! #Jeep #Gladiator #PowerSteps

I agree with others that I wish you would have shown more details on the wiring. Where did you get the modules to use them with the doors off?
@Chromedonkey
@Chromedonkey 3 года назад
I don't use them with the doors off.. I decided to punt on that whole endeavor because I found it just unnecessary personally. You do have the ability to lock them in the open position while you are removing your doors initially, but they will then stay down the entire time until you re-attach the doors harness. For me, i've found just letting them retract and putting a little extra bounce in my jump to the seat is more than adequate.

You left out the most important part of the installation: The wiring. I wish that you had gone into details as which wire goes where etc... The bolting, on the other hand, isn't very hard since most of them are self-explanatory.

Good catch.. Next time i'll try to be more thorough on areas covered.

@@Chromedonkey I just installed these on my gladiator, I seem to have not hit the right color pin for the driver rear signal. You mind helping me out. Would you please let me know the color pin you tapped into for this, on the white connector In the kick panel. The specs ask for violet and grey, is this the same color you did?

Thanks for the video ! Wish someone would do a short detailed video on the wiring , good job Update I just received mine today 7/1/20 and I do not have the rock rail ? Instructions don’t show it either? That sucks

Yea, I will say the wiring harness wasn't quite long enough for my taste (based on where I wanted to position the control box under the hood); however, I made it work anyway :).

I have these on my jeep and wondered how they react without doors. After reading comments I see they don't. Still thinking of ways around that problem my question is will tube doors activate the steps as usual?
@Chromedonkey
@Chromedonkey Год назад
No, tube doors won't activate them as they get their trigger from the actual plug you disconnect when removing the original doors. That said, I did install the switch that you can get from Amp Research that fixes this problem (or did for me, have since sold the JT). It was an easy to install switch that allowed you to manually flick them up and down for when the doors are removed. I liked this because there were times wheeling w/o doors where I didn't want them moving when I hopped out to take some cool pics, etc..

Just bought a 2023 Gladiator Rubicon and it’ll be staying on the payment. I bought it mainly to take the grandkids for rides in the summer with the roof off. These look the go to boards. Are you happy with them and would you buy them again?
@Chromedonkey
@Chromedonkey 3 месяца назад
Sorry for the delay.. Gotta love it how RU-vid doesn't notify me when there are comments held for review.. I have since sold my JT, but to answer your question, YES, these were fantastic steps! I never had any issues with them, and they accommodated my family perfect! I did install the accessory switch for manual control as I took my doors off a lot of times in the summer, and without this switch, they won't operate since the doors aren't there to trigger them. Highly recommended if you plan to remove the doors, otherwise, it's not necessary! I would purchase again!

Hey brother, sorry about the delay here.. I just went & measured and in their extended position, they are right at 13" from the door sill that you have to clear to step in and the top of the step. Hope this helps you out.

Hello I have a question for u. After u did your 4.5 lift and 39” tires. What’s the height of the set of the amp to the ground when deployed out? Thanks I’m running 37” with 4” lift but wife struggles getting in and I’m looking at buying these
@Chromedonkey

Sorry for the delay, been terrible about checking my comments :). I have since sold the Gladdy, but memory serves, in their down position, they would give you an extra 8-12" of access from the kickplate to the step. My wife is 5'2, and she was able to get in using the step + the grab handle. Definitely grab the manual switch for when the doors are off though, otherwise, you'll be toting around a mini steps tool for her lol :)

@Chromedonkey
@Chromedonkey 2 года назад
Thanks for the feedback! Not sure on the jammed part, I will say my motors have been working tirelessly since I installed it, zero issues.. I've been impressed thusfar with their reliability.. Having said that, there is BOUND to be an easier way to install the wiring. At this point, I would have preferred to see an OBDII passthrough plug of sorts, they need to be more plug & play.

Great video, your Gladiator looks great. Quick question, when wiring the steps to the gladiator did the instructions tell you the correct wires to splice into on the gladiator?
@Chromedonkey
@Chromedonkey 3 года назад
It does. That was definitely the most tedious part of this process, if i'm being honest. I have already gotten a few comments about I should have recorded that part, to which, hindsight being what it is, I completely agree :) Just pay close attention to the wire colors is tells you to T-splice into. But yes, those details are included in the instructions. Thanks for the compliment.

I’m guessing in order to keep video manageable you left out the wiring.
@Chromedonkey
@Chromedonkey 2 года назад
Yea, this was a bit earlier on in my video "don't forget to do this or that" saga lol.. It's been a minute since I have done another video, but since this, now have a head mount for the Insta360, so my plan next time I do a how-to is to just let that 360 cam record, and go back later and explain some of the process.. The wiring on these, frankly, was a bi**h! You had to tap into some of the super thin wires under the passenger-side glovebox, and yea, I really wish hindsight I would have taken the time to show exactly which wires I tapped into to get it working as I did tap into a wrong one, or two lol.. Sorry about the lack of clarity on wiring.

Great video, very informative! How tough do you think these will be? Do you think they will handle an occasional bounce off a boulder?
@Chromedonkey
@Chromedonkey 3 года назад
That was also my concern. I can tell you i've definitely wheeled with them installed and they haven't bent or been damaged to the point of not working.. I have a few road rash scars on the outer side where they did their job. All that said, I kind of doubt they are as durable as some of the other vendors who market theirs as "rock rails" first with the added option of a swing-out step. But, so far, so good :) *If I went to the Rubicon Trail, I wouldn't expect them to work when I returned....

@Chromedonkey
@Chromedonkey 2 года назад
They won't work w/o doors unless you either do some manual bypassing or order their manual switch control (which I did) to manually control them (works perfectly). They sell it either on their site or Amazon.

I got them off Amazon (link in the description).. And you're right, they are NOT cheap by any means, but I do love the finished look. I wanted the protection, even if just a little, that the XL's provide over the typical steps, as well as the lower drop.
@danielmiller4354
@danielmiller4354 2 года назад
Did you happen to have any issues with the relays not working when the doors were off? One of my concerns about the steps is not having them function without doors lol
@Chromedonkey
@Chromedonkey 2 года назад
So they 100% do not work when the doors are off; however, they sell a manual switch that plugs into the harness under the hood that provides manual control with the doors off. I have since installed that and it works perfectly! They sell it on their site I believe (if not, check Amazon)
