Nothing like having to watch yourself on RU-vid from 10 years ago to remember how you did a job...because there's another Jeep that needs it done! The gift that keeps on giving.

At 9 years old this video is still the best one on this job. I’m not sure if mine needs this, I’ve had some tranny/transfer leaks that I’ve fixed first. About to finish up adding power steering and driving it for a long distance to see if in fact I have a seal leak or not. Great job guys. It’s funny how the video gear/quality has improved as well!

Just did a 98 cherokee. Just be advised many times the oil filter adapter will leak and the oil will make it's way to the back of the engine and look like the rear main is leaking. A few bucks to replace the orings for that and a half hours time. The valve cover also is a common leak spot that will drip to the same area. Point is be sure to check these areas first before assuming it is the rear main.

@taxman121
@taxman121 3 месяца назад
@@andrewthixson Yes! It is a little intimidating. Getting the old seal out was easy. Sliding the new one in was very hard. Have to go slow to not damage the new seal. Use the instructions in the video. You really need to make sure you install it in the correct orientation so look at the old one and take pictures especially if it takes you a couple days. I bought two new seals in case I damaged one during the install. They are cheap so might as well. Didn’t end up needing it though.

This video gave me the courage to finally attempt changing my oil pan gasket and rear main seal on a 1994 Jeep Cherokee 4.0. I didn't attempt it before because I thought I would have to remove the transmission. It did take me a little while to get the upper half of the main seal to budge but I finally got it out. Reinstalling it wasn't too bad after I lubed it up w/ soap. After about a week I have no leaks, first time in about 8 to 10 years. I may be able to even remove the cardboard from the floor of the garage. Thanks again for the video.

Great video guys. Just retired and finally getting around to tinkering with me 77 CJ7 and this was my first job. My challenges were to get the top seal out. It was really stubborn. Someone on a forum said loosen all the bearing caps and it should relieve some pressure. But after letting it sit for a couple days with the cap off, I tried one last time and out it came. My other challenge was getting the oil pan to drop off. The one mount was in the away. I removed the plate and jacked up the engine a bit and finally after a lot of rattling and giggling, I manage to get it off. I hope putting it back up is not as much as an issue. Thanks again. Mark

Just did my 1990 YJ… Quick tip for upper rear main seal placement: I was having a hard time inserting the upper seal by hand (even with dish soap & oil) * I realized that I could use needle nose pliers to gently push the seal into place, reverse of the way I removed it. Manual [section 9-91] stated the use of 518 Loctite[anaerobic]RTV. It also illustrates a 19mm long strip of RTV on top of bearing cap[not wider than 6mm]. Strip starts just behind the L shape of new gasket to half way point of bolt hole. I don't know what way is best? Sounds like you've done numerous times. What type of RTV did you use?

Hi, just came across this great video before replacing my rear main seal. everything went well until I went to insert the upper half of the seal. It was really hard to get into place even when using dish soap. Im sure I put it in the right direction; grooved side facing oil, but it was really tight. Could it just be because its new and not as compressed as the old seal? everyone else seems to be threading their seals in with much less resistance than I experienced. Anyone else out there have this issue?

good video, boys - this job looks super easy in your case ! How was removing the oil pan ? I heard pita stories with working on the starter, exhaust, axle,.... before being able to take the pan out - thanks.
