I'm so happy I bought an XJ, never thought I'd be so happy for an old car. Transmission flush in Denmark cost minimum 1.000$ Thanks for the tips, now I only need gasket kit and oil! ;)
Hey man, what a job! I live in Brazil and i have a XJ 97/98, here we don´t have lots of information about xj´s. Your youtube channel is awesome, helps me a lot. Thanks by information.
Been a jeep cherokee owner since 1996 i never have flushed transmission fluid or replaced it i will not start flushing just to say i flushed it Scientifically proven i will say that thank God for fluid filters
I am your biggest fan. Question: I just put in a new water pump, radiator, hooked up the new hose...I have a Hayden 405 Ultra cool transmission intercooler. Can I install the intercooler without having to cut the hose and put in the double barb fittings?
You definitely can, there is many ways to connect a transmission cooler. But as Austin did, it is probably the simplest and easiest way. I did exactly as he did just this past Sunday when I installed mine.
im gonna be doing mine soon since it's dark. Just bought a kit off RockAuto with the filter and gasket. Might do a video on it, not sure since i dont have a tripod to hold my phone haha
Great video. One question..So.you dump a gallon of new fluid then disconnect that front tube and drain about 3/4 of a gallon or until it turns red? Then refill until it's at the right level?
What was your total DIY cost, and total time start to finish? Just wondering what $/hr you have to place on your time to make this worth it knowing it would take me at least 1.5-2x longer!
Thanks man! I recently bought a 96 XJ and was told to use ATF 4+ but the transmission feels heavy when cold, I'm going to replace it with Dex/Merc and see how that helps. Nice Jeep btw!
HOL THANKS FOR THE VIDEO IS VERY GOOD. I HAVE A DOUBT, I AM DOING THE SAME JOB BUT I THINK I DID SOMETHING WRONG, THE LIQUID THAT COMES OUT IS THE NEW LIQUID. HOW DO I REMOVE AND CHANGE, DO I HAVE TO DRAIN THE ENGINE? DO I HAVE TO REMOVE IT FROM THE COOLER? PLEASE HELP ME FIND THE CORRECT LINE, ANOTHER QUESTION DO I HAVE TO PLACE A PLUG WHEN I DISCONNECT THE LINE WHEN OPERATING THE ENGINE? THANKS FOR EVERYTHING.
I think my transmission has a shutter from 3rd gear to 4th. Did a couple drain and filled and it’s still there. Would you say a flush might work better?
I don't know exactly since there is always oil in the torque convertor so the transmission is never dry. I bought 2 gallons and had enough even with doing a flush.
You would have to check which transmission you have, the Transmissions can vary with engine type so hard to say what capacity of transmission fluid it would take.
Exactly, how many liters for the flush and how many liters for the complete exchange? ( does the flush end when all the fluid has come out completely?)
All automatic transmissions may be different so I would recommend looking in the owners manual for the correct amount. When all fluid comes out from the flush, make sure to shut off the Jeep right away. That is the amount the transmission can possible pump out at the time. It can be repeated after new fluid is in and reflushed to get an even better fluid color.
Using the rubber hose is ok as long as you keep the correct length. If you miss the length you will misread the level on the dipstick. While it may seem that it won't matter the level in these trans is very important.
I wanted to do my trans fluid but now hearing that if it’s burnt it would be best not to change it I’m kinda questioning wether or not I should. How would I know if I should or not change my fluid?
Chris fix has a great video on explaining what the colors of transmission fluid mean and when to change it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o690DovjDAc.html
Hey man nice vid i have a 99 classic and when i take off sometimes like when im leaving the driveway it will loose power and im giving it gas and its not really responding and then it will finally start to go faster what is that...? Thanks
My XJ check engine light came on after I changed the transmission oil, but after a couple runs the check engine light cleared itself and is running smooth, should I be concerned the check engine light disappeared?
243000 miles on grand cherokee laredo 4.0 got it at 60000 miles. not sure if trans oil changed before. i haven't done it. just learning. is ok to just drop the pan and change solenoids and sensor..... getting codes for them. will the make it it slip. just dropping the pan?? please reply. thanks ahead of time
Changing solenoids shouldn't cause any slippage, its in the torque converter where that would happen. But having bad solenoids could result in improper shifting. You should be fine changing them out unless your fluid is black and smells burnt, which is a sign of the torque converter going out. If you were to change the fluid when it was black you would have slippage problems with the new fluid.
if the solenoids are bad then they need changed.!. dont put off fixing the real problem in fear of changing the burn fluid ! your trans will not shift or it will try to skip gears if the solenoids are bad
Did your drain pan bolt have any type of crush washer or rubber gasket? Was surprised to not see a washer or anything on my bolt when I changed my fluid...
I do have some questions I do not have an XJ I have a limited edition Jeep Grand Cherokee 2002 the Transmissions been slipping and I'm just looking to find out if I just need to change the oil filter or the transmission filter and the fluid you mentioned something about the transmission fluid should be black mines spread I don't know if it's burnt I just have a couple questions on if this would be appropriate answer to transmission slippage
roger ballard Dark burnt fluid is best to keep in for the life of the transmission. It contains clutch fibers that have worn off the torque converter and the fluid will still have friction to operate. If the fluid was to be replaced the worn out torque converter wouldn't be able to work properly without that extra clutch fibers, then it would result in slipping.
OutJeeping Ok. I'm new to the jeep Cherokee world. I have a 1995 base model XJ with 139k miles. The tranny fluid is red, not dark red, and when check hot, the dip stick show over filled. The guy I bought the jeep from, said he was a mechanic.... I find that funny as I work on this jeep. I want to put a tranny cooler on, so now, the best way is to drain the pan, replace the filter, attach the tranny cooler , button everything up and just add new fluid without a fluid flush? And , I do find your channel more helpful then so others. Thank you for any feed back.
@@OutJeeping you forgot to mention that part. Or did I missed it. I've done it in a Escalade once and I didn't have to put it in neutral or d. As I remember it was just the engine running in park
@@rsanchez7111 Yeah I believe I had mine in park as well. Though the Grand Cherokee's have different transmissions than what's in the Cherokees, so fluid routing internally could be different.
Anyone that has any idea about the 2002 limited edition Jeep Grand Cherokee please let me know anyting I'm desperate I don't have 500 or $1, 000 when I know it could be as simple as just changing the transmission fluid draining it and replacing the transmission filter the transmission light keeps coming on and off and then on but today I would step on the gas it wouldn't go and then it would slam into gear so I was peddling it just so I can make it to work make it home I went up a hill a Long Hill it was like a mountain and by the time I got back to where I came from that's when it started slipping really bad every stoplight I'd have to Pedal it to get it to catch a gear
