Jeep Wrangler YJ - Fuel gauge problems? I demo what steps you need to take in chasing down the problem. Cleaning the gauge cluster. Pointers about other issues while the fuel pump is out. No more guessing how much gas is in the tank. As a bonus, all of my gauges now work! You gotta see what I cleaned the electrical with.

I used to carry a pencil with big erasor when I was a m60a1 tank driver in the usmc...thats how we kept our intercom working, we had to clean all the connectors every couple days. This is the best jeep yj gauge video on youtube for sure...I’m doing this to mine soon, thanks for the info.

Thank you for your service sir!! Back when I was taking electronics in high school, we used pencil eraser many times! Glad you like the YJ Gauge video. I put some time into that one to detail it the best I could. Thanks for taking the time to leave a great tip for others! Have a great day!!

Matt Kramer Thank you very much! I had seen that there wasn't very clear information on the internet about diagnosing and repairing the fuel gauge. Once I got a full understanding of the system, I wanted to try and capture the details as best as I could in hopes of helping more people. Thanks for dropping by! BTW .. When I get the materials together, I gotta copy your tire carrier! That thing rocks!! Have a great day!

You welcome man! Glad the videos help. I enjoy creating them. The YJs are the most simplistic design of any fuel injected vehicle I have ever worked on..... Love 'em! As you stated, there are some issues that they all share. Luckily they aren't too hard to diagnose ans repair. Also, the YJs parts aren't as expensive as the others .. thats a biiiig bonus! Thanks for hanging in with me. Hope my videos always serve you well! Have a great day!

I'd like to add this as well. Since a sending unit is about $87.00. You can also try cleaning the metal contacts inside the unit as well. We just took out the sender in a 1987 wrangler and leaned it with brasso. Then rinsed with lacquer thinner. When measured in ohms it is now reading correctly. The initial problem was a bouncing fuel gauge needle. All is good and saved a few bucks. Thanks for your tutorial, it was a great help!

Great video. I am glad I came across it. I have the same problem in my Jeep. The fuel pump was replaced so the gauge is working sometimes. But you cleaning the contacts on the instrument cluster and seeing the end of your video where you took the plastic "tub" the pump sits in out is where I am looking next. Thanks. Keep adding more Jeep videos!!
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 9 лет назад
Brandon Givens Glad you like it! :The contacts in the cluster is usually the most common issue. Watch the video and take notes as to each point that I tested and how. Then you can chase down which end is the issue. It's rare, but the sender can also be flaky. When you pull the little white tub, clean and test the contacts where the float arm swings. I also demo'ed how to test that in in the video. It can be a booger to track down, just get all the contacts clean to start. Good 'ol cheap hot sauce does the trick without taking away any metal. Until you get it straight, use that trip odometer to keep track of how many miles per fill up so you dont run out of gas. Hope this helps!! Big Thanks for checking out my channel and taking the time to comment! Have a great day!!

Great vidio. Glad I found it and thanks. I have a 87 YJ. I have a gas gauge that shows quarter full when tank is empty, could be the float thats hanging up on the yellow tray as you showed on the vidio and a great job on the gauges.
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 9 лет назад
Bud Pyrih Yep .. very common issue! The float hangs on the yellow tub and the gauge reads 1/4 tank. Then the fellow Jeeper runs out of gas and is left wondering "what the heck?!?! @jdmvcummins2551
@jdmvcummins2551 10 лет назад
PowerAddicts Hey man so I've yet to cut the access hatch but its coming. But, I have already replaced the whole sending unit and fuel pump and cant get any reading with my shitty multimeter. Regardless I am sure it works. Couldn't get anything from the jeep side wiring harness with power to it so I used a test light and showed I had 1 hot wire (fuel pump I assume because jeep runs fine). So I went and refurbished the gauge cluster with wd-40 and q-tips (no hot sauce) and I put the literal fuel gauge arm to empty and put it all back together and it went right back up so I know the gauge and cluster works and I am like 99% sure the sending unit still works. So after brief but further inspection of my jeep end wires I see one obvious bare spot by the wiring harness. My question is what do you suggest my next step should be? Splice in new wires leaving the minus the fuel pump wire? Thanks in advance
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 10 лет назад
John Miller To test the harness from the plug to the gauge, try the straight pin trick starting at 40:42. With key on, harness unplugged from the fuel pump, straight pins not connecting/crossed. The gauge should read full. Leaving the key on, tie a wire around the straight pins to complete the circuit. The gauge should read empty. If the actual gauge is functioning properly, you should not have to physically move the needle anywhere. It should do it all on its own. If the straight pin trick doesn't do as I demonstrated in the video. There is either a wiring issue (could be the bare spot you mentioned, grounding out) or the gauge has given up the ghost. If it doesn't respond, try running a new wire to the cluster where the gauge connects to the film. If it responds then, it's a wiring issue. Trace down where and fix it or run a new wire. That's what I would try. As for cutting the access panel, please drop your tank first so that you don't cut the tank and damage it. Or worse cause and explosion from the sparks. Let me know how it goes ...

DEFINITELY well explained! All I really looked to find out is that when the tank is full the resistance is HIGHER and when the resistance is zero it sends the gauge a signal which is empty. The plastic piece is most likely my problem. Dummass me filled the damn tank up last night and so I have a full tank to deal with or wait till I run some out. I aint into the siphoning thing any more....... My tank always reads empty....I'm betting the plastic tub is holding the float down.......frikin one thing after another......What I get for buying an old YJ....92......Runs good but already had to change tires (didn't match...BIG no no with 4x4) the high beams shorted out completely....going down the road in black night time where there are tons of critters.....turned out to be the driving lamps they installed and didn't hook up right and shorted out....got a leak on the output shaft of the transfer case.......SHIT! They bent that putting one in it and didn't get another new one......dummasses......and it's got a front end click when turning slightly right......Needs syncro mesh rings....grinds going into gears.......clutch master was wiped out......the hits just keep coming. Paid too much for it too......$5k. I probably could have bought a real nice one for what I'm going to have in this one......!!!!! Sellers are liars! My own damn fault
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 7 лет назад
I tried to catch all the details. Glad the video gave you what you needed!! Dude ... mine was an un-drivable basket case when I got it! For a long time I had a hollow jack handle for a shifter. My first gear popped and broke while sitting at a red light in neutral .. explain to me how that happens .... lol. I was like WT heck ... Im sitting still!! I wished I had started this channel when I first got. It would have been fun to watch the evolution from a broken down farm toy to daily driver. I gave 1k for it, but she was in bad shape with no top!! I have a little over $3500 in it now. But I do lots of trading for parts and stuff to keep costs down. I traded a t-case and transmission from a 3/4 chevy for the (then new) complete Bestop SuperTop you see on it in the videos. My sister paid 7k for hers, she paid waaaaay too much for a barely running 4 cylinder with tons of body damage. But she had to have it .. lol. Old Yjs come with problems, but luckily they are the easiest generation of Wranglers to work on.

I think this might be what is wrong with my fuel gauge.. I had a brand new sending unit and all installed. When I got stuck in the Nashville area. Two months later I hit a pothole here in Knoxville and my gas gauge shot to empty. A guy did the gauge test and it worked. I bet it is that little box/tray

Love your down to earth videos. Glad i watched to the very end as my problem is my gauge goes up to full but doesn’t go below half full. Quick question, when you pulled the two hoses off the fuel pump why didn’t you mark them to know how they go back on?
@Poweraddicts

The hoses are 2 different sizes so they only correctly fit a certain fitting. If it helps you, use different color electrical tape to mark where each hose went before you pull them off.

Just watched the video...awesome. I was wondering what the point of the yellow tray is at bottom of tank and any downfalls to removing it?
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 6 лет назад
I ripped it out in one of the videos. No issues at all. That tray was meant to keep the sending unit float submerged in fuel. That makes the fuel hand stable and not moving around because of fuel slosh. If someone is OCD enough the fuel hand moving occasionally because of fuel moving accounting the tank, I guess that could be a downside. Thanks for dropping in! Have a great day!

Okay so, about a week ago I filled my 95 yj up completely for the first time since I bought it, have had it for about 10 months now. Before this my gas gauge was working just fine but I noticed a few days after that my needle won't budge and is stuck slightly above full. I would assume the arm in the tank has somehow gotten stuck, but I figure I should ask for other opinions on this because I am by no means a mechanic.

Hey man, I’ve been struggling with my 95’ 2.5L. Installed a fuel sending unit from Amazon lasted a year surprisingly. Figured the pump quit so I replaced it with a delphi pump I had sitting in my toolbox, it didn’t work. So I got an import direct fuel pump, still didn’t come on with the key but will work when directly attached to the battery. I have power all the way to the pump, I have a good ground. I’ve also replaced the plug on both sides of the fuel sending unit due to the original being worn out. I’ve checked my relays by putting them in the spot for my horn and bumping the horn, all of them worked. Any help is appreciated!

Pencil eraser or a pink eraser are good for cleaning contacts. I prefer that over razor blades. Then a good cleaning with a contact cleaner then dielectric grease
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 9 лет назад
InjunOne Very true. I used to use pencil erasers to clean the contacts on my old electric race car track. Wow .. kiddie flash back!! LOL . The hot sauce worked great. Contact cleaner also a great suggestion. The grease is a must to prevent the contacts from "re-corroding". The gauge cluster and fuel gauge all still works great since the filming of that fix. Thanks for your video - any issues when doing sharp long turns with the plastic tub removed from the tank? I know it's made to hold fuel in the center for the pick up of the pump to prevent from starving. Got the tank out and debating whether to use either heat from a blow dryer to melt it back straight, or to bend the rod to make it avoid the tub.
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 7 лет назад
Nope .. no issues at all. I've had it at a few hard angle descents and climbs. Turning long sharp turns like entrance and exit ramps. Its been fine every since I snatched it out. If you straighten it out, it will eventually just "re-warp". They all do it. Same if you bend the arm.

Great video. I've owned my '93 for 20 years and I always ran out of gas at a little over a quarter tank. Learned to live with but still hated it. Had an expensive mechanic change the sending unit but still no improvement. Now I suspect the little tray. My problem is I don't think it's that easy to drop the 20 gal. tank I have. Any suggestions?
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 9 лет назад
luvbigiron Pull all the fuel out first to lighten it up. Remove the filler and vent hoses. Loosen all your bolts holding the tank in place. Put a big floor jack under the tank and pump it up just until its got slight pressure on the bottom of the tank. Remove the bolts and balance it on the jack as you let it down. That how I dropped mine. You having a 20 gallon tank just means that you dont have the vent extension tube that was located where the vent hose attaches to the tank. Here is a link to my site that demonstrates me pulling that tube to create a 20 gallon tank www.fixjeeps.com/Jeep-YJ-gas-tank-mod.html . Hope this helps. Thanks for dropping by! Have a great day!

have 89 yj ,gas gage works but needle bounces around ( as tank empires ) while driving & is almost empty between 1/4 & 1/2 , would that little yellow tray be my problem for both cases . like ur videos has helped for other problems .
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 8 лет назад
+John Crowder Typically that yellow tray just causes issues not allowing the gauge needle to all the way down making the driver think you have fuel when you are empty. Needle bouncing around could be a faulty sending unit. Thats one of those "needle in a haystack" situations. I know thats not a cut / dry answer but I hope it helps some.

Ya know .. that wouldnt be to hard to rig up. I've got an extra fuel sending unit, I may experiment with that to see what it would take to make it work. If I make it work and shoot the video, I'll give you the shout out credit. Thanks for dropping in and leaving a cool idea! Have a great day!!

Hey great video but I have a bad fuel pump but I really don't want to drop the tank do u think it is a good idea to cut the hole in the back like yours that is so smart and easy
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 9 лет назад
ian thusrston When I cut mine I had the tank dropped. It helps from cutting into the tank and causing the boom effect! Unless you are very careful about how deep you run the blade into the jeep floor you could easily cut into the tank. Sparks and gas vapors make for boom. So, it's up to you, I personally would drop the tank for safety. Its really not that hard. Just empty the tank to make it light as possible. Thanks for checking out the video! Have a great day!

I know this is an old video and I hope you will reply as I have my 87 YJ fuel tank sitting on a table testing the gauge float as Im typing.....question....@ 41.06 in video the fuel gauge slams to full without the sending unit attached when you turn the key to on......should mine be doing that as well?....when my switch turns it bumps up a tiny bit but thats all, so the whole tying the wire together doesn't do anything either.....thought was my sending unit but appears not to be......any help will be appreciated...love your videos, you have already helped me tremendously!
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 4 года назад
I'm not sure what year the cut off is, but there is a point to where the sending units "resistance" is reversed. The CJ units work backwards from the YJs. I'm not 100% sure if they kept that resistance swing going. All the rigs I've worked on have been 91 or above which means they were all fuel injected YJs. But none the less, the basic mechanics as to how the gauge works with the sending unit is still the same no matter what kind of car it is. The only difference being how much resistance the unit creates and whether it goes high to low .. or .. low to high numbers.
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 4 года назад
With a multimeter, make sure the sending unit works properly. Then adding a 12 volt source in the circuit straight wire it to the guage. That will take any bad wiring or grounds out of the loop. If the gauge still acts silly. Gauge is the issue. Those kinda diagnosis are kinda hard to chase without physically getting into the parts. Hope this helps some how. Have a great day.

Thanks for the reply.......Well since I left that comment it started showing correctly and I have changed the sending unit (new unit is showing 0-90 ohms like its supposed to), and the gauge cluster ribbon, but now the gauge (which is new as well) is only showing 1/2 tank with the float arm all the way to full....the gauge starts moving only after Ive moved the arm up around 1/4 of the way up......any ideas? I will try the straight circuit as well

Looks like you have no doors on but still have mirrors on, how is that since the mirrors are mounted on the door hinges? Could you make a video one day with just an overview of the jeep, interior and exterior, Ive seen so many tech videos and im kinda getting curious on what the jeep actually looks like. thx
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 9 лет назад
Hmm ... interesting. I've never been asked that or even thought about it. Yep .. I can do that sometime. Wish I had pictures of when I first got it. She was a basket case. Most people would have parted it out. I saved it and gave her a good home. Still needs lots of work. But, miles and miles ahead of where it started. It used to be a farm toy for a 14 year old kid. It was a true legit barn find. As for the mirrors, I fabbed my own mounts off the wind shield. Here is the vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L6JU5zuOH7c.html . The square tubing the mirrors are mounted on needs to be rotated until the top surface of the tube is horizontal with the ground. The way they are now positions them downward too much. I have to kinda "look up" into the mirror to get the correct angle to see behind me. I've got another design idea just havent done it yet. I need to figure out a cool place to shoot the overview. Something that's Jeep fitting ya know. Cool idea .. thanks for the interest! Thanks for checking out my video!! Have a great day!!

I recently changed my gas tank on my 93 yj. Before I put the new tank in my gas gauge worked perfectly. The new tank I purchased did not include the little plastic tray to hold fuel like the stock one had. The problem I'm having is now my gas gauge is just stuck on full(even after me driving several miles) the gas gauge won't move. I transferred the entire fuel pump and sending unit from the stock tank to the new tank. Any ideas on what's wrong? I'm going to try and drop the tank again this weekend and pull the system off and play with the float up and down like you did to see if it's working. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds like a ground issue. Check your wiring and grounding points where the harness comes out and over the tank. Good luck and have a great day!

Hey is there any specific way the fuel pump needs to be placed back in to the tank cause i had to remove it to replace the gasket and drove it for 2 days just fine then the fuel pump went out idk know if it was the way i put it back in or not
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 9 лет назад
TheAustin9110 On mine it could not be put it in wrong. The screws around the plate that holds the pump/sending unit assembly has a specific bolt pattern that only lines up with the tank one way. Don't know if you have replaced the pump yet. Thought I'd mention to pay the extra $$ to get a Bosch pump. There are way less expensive options but I've always had issues with them. My dad, on his S10, went through 3 "less expensive" pumps within 6 months. He got the Bosch pump and several thousand miles later still rolling strong. Bosch is what I installed in my Jeep. Good luck and thanks for dropping by. Have a great day!

on my 91 yj my gauge does what ever it wants it can say empty of full and over full even any hints????
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 9 лет назад
clinton pierce You have connection issues. Start with the most simple thing first, Id start by pulling the cluster and cleaning it as I demo in the video. If that doesn't work, pull the fuel sending unit and test it. Possible but not quiet as likely there could be wiring grounding out some where. The part in the video where I demo testing the wires, make the contact in the two wires. Then trace the wiring all the way to the dash to see if there is a bare spot causing a short. Hope that give you a direction to start. Thanks for dropping in, have a great day!

@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 10 лет назад
My clutch is getting pretty weak and is needing to be changed. I'm just trying to make it last until I'm ready to swap in my other 4.0 engine and do it all at once. But in other cars I've changed a many of clutch systems. What problems are you having? Maybe I can help ...
@soaplady6
@soaplady6 10 лет назад
Hi, Sorry it took me so long to respond back...life got in the way! The whole clutch system needed to be replaced and the new clutch had to be taken in and out about 3 times. Turned out that when it was packed and shipped to us a nail head fell into the packaging and wasn't noticed that it was stuck in the parts. When it was finally noticed and removed, the clutch was put back in and now works
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 10 лет назад
Pamela Jones I understand about life getting in the way .. whew! Weird about the nail in the clutch, new one on me. Happy you got it going though :-) I did the clutch in mine this past weekend. I'm compiling the video as I type this. As soon as it done, I'm pushing it to RU-vid. Thanks for checking out my videos!

they should have made that little tub wider so if it was prone to warp nothing would hang up and give a false reading
