Jeep Wrangler YJ - Change that Fuel filter

Jeep Wrangler YJ gets the fuel filter changed. It wasn't giving me any trouble. I just wanted to change it before it did. Cost about $14 and some change, cheap insurance to ensure the reliability of my rig.

Thanks for the info! I need to do my 97 TJ. Never been done. Had a frame mount bolt brake while trying to Looosen, ended up costing $367.00 to get drilled out. Just so I can put a new step bar on. Drivers side frame bolts are frozen too. Stinks big time!

I love your videos! My quarantine activity to get myself outside has been fixing up my husband's 94 YJ. I have no mechanical experience other than being the daughter of a builder and inheriting his spacial awareness, and always having the intense desire to take things apart to see how they work. My husband? Grudgingly does the heavy lifting and doesn't understand why I'm having so much fixing it up. Your videos are so so so helpful -- can't thank you enough :)

First let me say, Excellent tutorial and Thank you for posting your videos for Jeep repairs. They help immensely. Second, I purchased a new filter today (Same parts house as you mentioned) for my '92 and there isn't any arrows painted on it. However it does have the word "IN" stamped into one end in very small lettering. You just have to look for it. Also the entry nipple is a larger size than the exit nipple on the filter. If you need to replace the rubber filter hoses, make sure you buy them when you buy the filter, my new filter didn't come with any kind of hoses or clamps so now I have to make a second trip back to the parts house for new filter hoses. Hope this helps someone.

I followed your exact procedure to change out my fuel filter !!! Thanks to your video, it was painless and simple. The only issue was that some nitwit put the rear hose clamp on at an angle no human could reach. So, I had to remove the protection cover, reached it fine, it was also 10MM so no sweat. Thanks dude. Keep up the GREAT work !!!!!!

When I replaced the fuel filter on my 93, I released pressure from the valve on the fuel rail. And yes. I did cover it with a rag when I did it so as not to get face full of fuel spray.

your vids are very helpful! you mentioned your replacement pump doesn't have check valve, how does one know? I bought a crown auto replacement (93 YJ) and it wont hold pressure but everything else works fine. the specs say nothing about if it does or does not have check valve. Thank you for all of these videos!

Of note the inlet side of the filter is bigger than the outlet (in case there is no arrow). Also the inlet was 3/8” and outlet is 5/16” in case you need to replace the stubby sections of hose.

I remove the filter skid plate. Seems to be easier for me. Leak check and reinstall the skid plate. Thanks for the video.

I must have not a check valve because it takes 3 seconds for the engine to turn over to start and also I want to replace the rubber hoses to either side of the filter but they are 2 different sizes. Any suggestions on the slow start up, if the check valve is not my problem

I have a 1990 4.2 yj that I think has rust clogged somewhere because it runs fine when going slow but when I go above 45 it sputters and loses power and dies, I'm going to drop the tank and inspect it for rust, would rust be clogged in a line or would it just get clogged in the filter

I have a crank no start issue on my 88 2.5L. Did your screwdriver spark test for CPS sensor. Have spark. Going to change fuel filter tonight. What other ideas can you suggest. 88 doesn't have check engine light and has the carb. Don't see any videos about fuel pump relays or fuses. Thanks! Your jeep knowledge is awesome. I rank you right there with the late great DieselTech Ron who was a 6.0 Superduty genius.

Danny James I had this issue a couple days ago. I was using my test light to the fuses inside and under the hood the went to the ingnition switch wire and followed it to the first harness connector and started probing the wire slots, I came to a black with orange line wire and probed it and Bam, back in business it was a loose connection going into the harness. so I would check you ignition switch wire if everything else is good to go.

So about a year ago i changed the fuel filter was sent a wrong one but needed her back on the road. Since then ive radiator flushed tuned her up and was planning on a rebuild in the future. Ran fine then about 3 months ago my dash cluster went out due so didnt see my temp or oil i ended up lossing power and getting a bad knock. I was thinking i blew a piston baring but i started her a week ago and sounded better. I read up and ppl are saying might be fuel pump going or bad/bent lifter or rod. Plz help i will be getting the right fuel filter and checking valve cover first before attempt to open her up. Love the vids thanks again

Just had to replace mine , the one on it was rusted to crap... Had to do a oil pressure switch to, it was reading fine but pissing oil out the top of it, simple fix

Back when I first got mine it popped the oil sending unit. Happened before the RU-vid channel started. It was spraying a heavy stream of oil! Like you said, it was an easy fix. Good to see ya dropping in man!! Have a great day!

Is it difficult to also change out the hoses on the ends of the filter? I ask because we had 3 days and nights of very low temps and one night I cranked my Jeep and noticed gas was leaking from the filter to the ground. I suspect the rubber is so old and brittle that the intense COLD caused it to leak??? Even though it stopped leaking when the temperature went back up, I'm guessing those hoses need replacing too! I'm getting pretty old to be crawling underneath my Jeep anymore...will a decent mechanic know how to do all that? I guess I could link them to this video! haha

Hello, my 2004 Jeep Rubicon is taking longer to start. When I turn the key for 7 seconds, I have to do two to three on off cycles. Do you think this is the problem. I don't think you mentioned why you changed your filter?

Since the fuel pump has a good filter on it, in the tank, could this filter be eliminated ? Reason ; the L shaped rear fuel line is 5/16 and 3/8, haven't seen a replacement fuel line. Th fuel pump is about 40 -45 psi, neoprene fuel injection rated hose would handle the psi. Thoughts ?

Nope, got to have the one on the frame as well. The one in the tank is just pretty much a strainer. The can filter on the frame filters to a much finer micron. Regular FI hose will handle that no problem.

Here is the system pulled from the tank to diagnose a fuel gauge issue: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6i9X2agOEYs.html . I had already done the access plate mod before I started my RU-vid channel. So I never got on video the process of dropping the tank. It's just 4 bolts that hold 2 straps that support the tank. Be sure the tank is as empty as possible. Put a floor jack under the tank to help lower it slow and easy until you can access the fuel lines on the top. The two vids I linked gives a good idea of whats going on in the tank. Hope that helps! Good seeing ya again! Have a great day!

I have not tried to do it yet but would it be of any benefit to put a thin piece of rubber between the strap and the fuel filter? I'm wondering about the strap wearing on the fuel filter. Or worry worm over nothing?

There are some cars that do that. As long as the filter isn't shifting around, it's not going to wear into it. The old filter I took off was about 6 years of daily driving and some a bit of wheeling time. It showed no signs of any movement or wear. Thanks for dropping in! Have a great day!

I called the o Reilly for that filter and I was told it comes as a kit of a fuel pump..and the pump is inside the tank.. so why is your tjs filter outside the tank? Mine is a 98 wrangler

That is a 1991 YJ in the video, it says so right in the video title. Not a TJ. The filter for a TJ is on top of the fuel pump, you will have to drop the tank to get to it. Also, TJ filters rarely need to be changed because they have so much more surface area.

I think this is why mine keeps freezing up at below 0° , I think it's clogged up and freezing up, it's fine after it warms up or if I put some fresh fuel in it, just a thery but either way , it's gonna be changed, as like urs it was someone's toy , now my daily 👍

Love inheriting someone else's issues! LOL .. Have you tried running Heet fuel antifreeze? It doesn't get that cold for that long in Tennessee. Well, this year we were really close. Anyway, maybe this Heet will help. A partially clogged fuel filter will make the situation worse because of having less filtering element to flow through. If nothing else .. its a maintenance thing that should be done anyway. Thanks for dropping in Have a great day! 👍

I shut off the fuel pump and start the vehicle and the pressure is gone. Pull the fuel pump relay to shut the pump. I hate gas running down my arm.

That fuel line is under about 30 PSI. You don't want to use a cheap filter or you will have a serious fuel leak.

Nope, the fuel run out you get is from the fuel line not the tank.

ever since i've changed my filter i get an intermittent fuel leak from the filter. It's usually after the jeeps set for a while without being started. It ain't a small leak either, it's a spray. I turn the jeep off for about 10 minutes and start it up again and the leak will be gone. No idea wtf is up with that.

Sounds like you need to replace the rubber hoses at your filter or tighten up the hose clamp. You may have a small pin hole in one of them that is leaking when it's pressurized.

Any one have an idea of what to do if there is no markings for the direction on the fuel filter

Get another filter. Most filters have a way of supporting the filtering element be it a stronger wire mesh of perforated metal tube or something. If the fuel flow is going the wrong direction it will eventually tear the filtering element apart getting filter particles or junk from the tank in the rest of the fuel system. My rule is .. if the direction isnt marked .. get another filter. Hope that helps. Have a great day!

The larger pipe nipple on the filter is the inlet 3/8" the other outlet nipple is 5/16", you don't need any markings.

I would like to relocate my fuel filter, have the tank out cutting access in the tub and replacing pump ,if any Jeep people done this reply.

It is totally up to you but the filter is in a perfect place for it to be protected. Also the closer to the tank the filter is located the less likely for trash getting all though the fuel line. When I build custom fuel systems I place a filter just out of the tank and another one up stream somewhere. But I always have one closes to the tank as convenient as possible.
