The transformation is complete. The tired old 4.0L straight-6 engine out of our 1993 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) is now a 4.6L stroker. Davin wraps up assembly on the project. Just one more step remains... getting it back in the Jeep and driving down the road!

The trick of taping the sockets to the extensions works great for spark plugs that are deep inside of the cam cover or cylinder head. Those sockets love to stick to the spark plugs and pull off the extension.

Always great to see the "poor man's stroker" builds! Fun to watch you do this! I did notice however you hadn't mentioned that head bolt #11 goes into the water jacket and requires thread sealant and only gets 100 lbs/ft torque versus all the rest getting 110 lbs/ft torque. It seems trivial but many many years ago I discovered a leak from having forgotten that very important task. Can't wait to hear yours when it's done!

Locking extension may have been helpful? But always good to be extra sure too instead of tearing it apart to fish out a dropped socket/tool. Craftsman does have them and surely you have a few in the massive tool set they helped set you up with. I have them myself so I know they exist.

It's like a USB2 plug. There's 2 ways it can go in but somehow the first time you try it's always wrong. Good old Murphy. 🤣
@autka_me
@autka_me 2 года назад
6:00 there are socket sets with anti FOD locks (foregin object damage/debris), that you have to push to release (not just spring backed ball). Pricier, but fishing out socket from the engine is no fun.

Stab the distributor at TDC, I think that’s where he was going. Also, one could use a 9/16” bolt and nut in place of a hex key.
@thecaptain3773
@thecaptain3773 2 года назад
A 3/8ths by 1 1/2 with two nuts jammed up works also, if you can't find your 9/16ths allen. Same with a 1/4 x 1 1/2 for the older GM disc brakes, for when a 7/16ths wasn't around.

Speaking of dud sensors, had a car come in with a gauge tee'd into the pressure sensor hole and it kept dropping off at random. Put on a regular test gauge and the pressure was excellent. Ran it with the aux gauge and realised that whoever had installed it had somehow connected power via the second cooling fan relay and when the temp went up or turned the AC on the fan kicked in and sapped the power reading for the gauge.

@danosburn80
@danosburn80 2 года назад
little known fact, the engine doesn't actually have to be running to check the timing with a light.. I always check by cranking with no fuel, people think its magic when the engine fires perfectly the first time.. the reason it's so easy to get 180 out is because most camshafts are installed TDC at overlap between intake and exhaust and ignition needs to be TDC on compression.. put your finger over the #1 spark plug hole if you can and turn it till you feel compression, then find TDC..

Can confirm those oil pressure sending units are known to fail. I've also heard that some of them are "real" and some of them are "fake". Meaning that some report the actual pressure and others act more like an idiot light that fakes the gauge. That might just be a TJ thing though..?

The only question I have is, did you goop up the front driver side stud on the engine at the engine (I believe it's commonly considered the #11 fastener in the torque sequence)? That's an open hole to the water jacket. If you don't put some Permatex or some kind of sealant there, it will leak.

Couple things, did you check the lifter preload since you shaved the deck down quite a bit and head? Also im pretty sure the front head bolt outside the valve cover needs sealant and doesnt get torqued as much as the others.

im surprised you used the clay method rather than the dial indicator touching rocker/valve stem method. also, where do you find a double roller timing chain? and is there any adhesive for the freeze plugs or do you need to leave them in the freezer overnight?
@elij.s.7580

also, for the higher volume injectors does that require a different pressure regulator, fuel pump or computer programming? mines a 95 model, so its OBD1. not sure you can flash that computer or do anything with it

The toughest of the tough, those inline AMC/Jeep engines - and this one is probably one of the prettiest (yes *Davin* , I said pretty :-) ) I've ever seen. I can't figure out why the build is dragging out so much on it, though - shorter episodes this time seems like? Then it occurred to me that perhaps having an official sponsor might have something to do with it? No matter, we'll take our *Davin* any way we can get him. *Best show on Hagerty!* - Ed on the Ridge

FUEL INJECTORS?!? That part that's been commonly available on vehicles for the last 40+ years? That's some wild stuff right there. Don't get too carried away. It's absolutely amazing how many car shows are out there still bagging on EFI and acting as if it's some sort of black magic voodoo. I'm past 50 and I'd MUCH rather deal with EFI over a carby any day of the week. Every argument out there against EFI is old, weak, and almost always bull.
