This is my Cherokee I swapped axles in.
Front axle is a HP44 from a 70s Ford that has been narrowed to wagoneer width. I used Chevy parts from the knuckles out to convert to 6 lug. Then I swapped to Toyota wheel studs to match the threads of the rear axle. Used a rubicon express bracket kit, barnes 4wd LCA skids, ox locker, 4.88 motive gears.
Rear axle is from a 2000 Isuzu rodeo which is the same gear set as a non-rubicon JK. Also has 4.88 motive gears with an ox locker. Used a barnes 4wd swap kit.
Below are amazon links to some of the parts used:
Barnes 4wd steering kit- amzn.to/3FKThCW
Front axle bracket kit - amzn.to/3HrlPl0
Rear Ring and Pinion - amzn.to/3eDLxXe
Rear Conversion Yoke - amzn.to/3FIlbPS

Goddamn! I just regeared my 30 and 8.25 and was feeling like the coolest guy ever, but this is a whole other level! Did you do all the work yourself? Love the hodgepodge of things to get the front axle setup working.

I took the axle to a shop to have it narrowed, but everything else I did myself with the help of some friends. I was definitely overwhelmed going into it, then we did the rear axle one weekend and I felt pretty good about it, then we got to the front axle and things just weren’t going very easily and I ended up having to change so many little things that I got worried I had bitten off too much. In the end it turned out really well and it seems to be driving well on the road, haven’t had a chance to wheel it yet. I’d really like to put the sway bar back on, but finding a location to put the mounts on the axle is proving difficult with the drag link running off the highway steer arm.

Nice build. What leaf springs did you go with? I used ironman4x4fab shackle relocation kit and OME springs, it seemed to move the axle forward. I'm guessing the center pin is forward/closer to the front.

They’re iron rock offroad leaf springs. They ride pretty well and flex well. I had to warranty a set because they wore out super fast, but I’m hoping they were just a fluke and this set will last longer. Most leaf springs seem to “suck” the axle forward because when you flex them out and they flatten then the tire moves backwards helping it land back in the wheel well. If it’s centered at ride height they’ll usually rub on the back of the wheel well when flexed out.

Thank you for information.. Great stuff you are able to do.. I don't know if you will see this as it is old video and looks like you haven't posted any new ones in last 8 months.. But here goes: It is my understanding that your XJ, if stock trans/xfer location, has a centered output. You mentioned using a 2000? Isuzu D44 in rear. That has a 63" wms but the pinion on the diff isn't centered it is 2 1/2" to passenger side (30.5 / 32.5). Did you use it as is? or did you shorten one side to get it centered? Believe the 67 and earliers were centered but the 68 to 02's were the (30.5/32.5) axle flange to pinion.. Thanks.. hope your still safe, healthy, and enjoying life.

I used it as is and haven’t had any issues. A lot of vehicles factory have centered transmission/tcase outputs with slightly offset pinions

Thank you.. Glad you are well. I got in touch with a very reputable 4x4 driveshaft builder. He likewise confirmed that within reason for u-joints it is fine and shouldn''t present any issues. Did you stick with 30 spline with the OX or did you upgrade to 32? If you have the model it would be appreciated.. Thanks again!!@@thegreendumpster1414

I’m still 30 spline. I have a friend who broke a couple of 30 spline shafts and went up to 35 spline with a spool in his though

The front springs hadn’t changed in years, and the rear it ended up with shorter shackles sometime around that time. Possibly the brackets added a tiny bit of lift, but no lift kit change or anything. It’s sitting real low right now because the rear springs are shot again

I realize this video is a year old but hope that you see my comment and reply. Just curious....when you cut down the Ford HP to narrow track Wagoneer width and used the Wagoneer stock length axles, how well did the front diff match up with the transfer case? I am assuming the left inner Jeep axle was 15.8". I am looking at a similar transformation for our 96 XJ. I actually have the front and rear 44s from a narrow track Wagoneer AND a Ford HP 44 (none are in the XJ at this point). The Waggy is LP so I am in the planning stages of working the math for cutting the Ford. From what I have found I need to remove 2.63" on the passenger side and 2.8" on the driver side. I feel comfortable with those figures but am trying to figure out how well the front pinion lines up with the existing axle. Thanks much.

@thegreendumpster1414 Год назад
I don’t know how much the offset of the pinion changed, but everything works out just fine. My transfercase is clocked so that also changes things a bit. It’s not an exact science on how close it needs to be in my opinion

Beware that the bell on the RCV doesn’t fit through the hole in the knuckle on the Chevy/FSJ knuckles making trail repairs a PITA.
@thegreendumpster1414
@thegreendumpster1414 3 года назад
Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of forum posts and videos about it and such. Ideally if I end up with RCVs it won’t require too much repair as long as I stay up on my maintenance since I’ll be running relatively small tires.

daamn that many leafs in the back? dosn't run like a dump truck?

Lots of thin leafs in a pack actually makes for a much better ride than a few thin leafs. If you look at a lot of high speed offroad vehicles they have a lot of leafs in the pack.

Are you sure they discontinued the 35x12.5x15 MTR's? I just bought 5 of them from discount tire. I know they discontinued the 37 for a 15 inch rim.

When I had purchased these Falkens, the Discount Tire representative called Goodyear right in front of me and they told him they were discontinued. It’s possible they brought them back.

@@thegreendumpster1414 that's interesting I'll have to look into it further, I've been running MTR's for years they are my favorite tire, sounds like I might have to try something else for my next set. I know they discontinued the 37 for a 15 inch rim. I bought my tires on September 30th and they had to order them from another store but they didn't say anything about being discontinued. I want to keep 15 inch wheels because I run hutchinson rock monster double beadlocks and the weight difference between the 15 and 17 is pretty substantial, it's already a pretty heavy wheel. I guess people just aren't running 15s anymore like they used to.
