Leaf Spring JKU is the greatest thing I have ever seen! I have an 07 JKU that was 2wd and converted it to 4wd.

Wow great I needed this for my direction on a LS swap on a Jeep j-10 Now I know how to get pumpkins to line-up with Vortech 6.0 and 80l and how to do suspension in a path to successes .

Honestly, it might be best to just retube the diffs. It’s not all that easy…but it allows you to put them where you want. And if it’s fairly close to the factory position, there are axle shafts out there that allow you to cut the splines to the length you need. Otherwise you’ll need custom shafts. And all of that gets costly.

Ultimate d60s come with brakes, crunch the#s on an ultimate front 60, good short arm with db3" brackets etc bought used/ deals/amazon returns. Then 14 bolt leaf sprung rear. Having built long travel leaf spring setups on rigs in the past, the main issue is front axle control under hard braking on the street.
@WarPaintOffroad
@WarPaintOffroad Год назад
Ultimate Dana 60’s do come with brakes. But that doesn’t allow the jeep to push enough fluid to make them work. That’s what I was referring to. It’s not a cost benefit over building it this way. And controlling it isn’t bad. Depends how it’s set up. I’m sure you know, you can’t have everything. The more you build it for offroad the less well it drives on road and vice versa. It’s why drag cars don’t make good autocross cars, etc. its just part of the deal.

You can get close , after a lot of sprung over yj, cj, toyotas on jeep springs, even a willys wagon on a wagoneer frame with nearly identical springs wheelbase and weight to maple leaf, I am just saying that this was the hiccup and we often added links to control it. Love the build and the idea, REAL JEEPS HAVE LEAF SPRINGS!....... GET OFF MY LAWN YOU YUPPIE? HIPPIE? COMMIE? WHATEVER?

The biggest caveat to the leaf spring build cost, is that you need the knowledge and the tools and ability to actually do all that stuff yourself. If you had charged him labor for all of that and added those costs for the hours and hours you put in then that cost would increase a good amount.
@WarPaintOffroad
@WarPaintOffroad Год назад
Absolutely! But that is exactly why I made the build series. To show everyone who is interested how to do it step by step. It’s not hard when you have someone to show you. Regearing…etc…and even the spring set up. I made videos about all of it and I’m always available for questions. But even with that said, buying a set of store bought axles, tires, wheels, driveshafts, brakes, etc would have been way more. And if you couldn’t build it all…you definitely aren’t able to install it all. So there would STILL be labor involved in top of more money up front.
@TomSmith-nx3hx
@TomSmith-nx3hx Год назад
I think the point of his videos and this series IS to do it yourself. It ain't rocket surgery.

@@WarPaintOffroad Excellent. As you know, Ive been waiting. Another caveat is doing a coil build is more difficult than leaf either way...DIY or paying someone...

$500 for the front, or did I miss something??? I have been looking and finding front 60 and rear 14 for about $600 for both.
@WarPaintOffroad
@WarPaintOffroad Год назад
Then scarf them up! You can’t find them anywhere near that in most places. Even junk yards sell the Superduty Dana 60 for about $650

How did you set your caster and pinion angles. Thanks for the video
@WarPaintOffroad
@WarPaintOffroad Год назад
So I just bolted the leaf springs to the axle but didn’t weld the perches in initially. I left the u bolts loose enough so I could put a jack on the pinion and move it. I then put it on wheels and tires and set the rear so it was pointing directly at the back of the transfer case and the lowered it 2°. I set the front according to caster. I did it a similar way and shot for 5°. The axle likes to have more..but drag link clearance with the leaf made me put it at 5°. Once it was set I tack welded the perches…took it back apart, and finish welded. Hope that helps! Thanks for the support!

know of anyone who did the 1 ton swap on the JL Rubicon without any computer issues? Wayalife did it on his first JL and had issues with the computer/FAD, that the Tazer program couldn't fix
@WarPaintOffroad
@WarPaintOffroad Год назад
I know a number of people do them…but I’m not sure exactly how to fix certain issues with those. But it’s definitely doable. People swap them all the time.

Show the on-road body roll of long leaf springs, no sway bar. Did you try to compare junkyard axles to Dynatracs? Different customer. Turn key vs. hours
@WarPaintOffroad
@WarPaintOffroad Год назад
The on road body roll isn’t bad at all. I mean no one is taking a jeep like this around highway exit ramps like a race car. But it’s less than my jku with 3 link long arms and sway bars. Of course it’s a different customer. But that is my point…it’s not as “turn key” as people think. LOTS still need to be done. And when the hours are your own spent in your garage as a fun hobby…that is a “cost” people are more than willing to spend. Plus, the extreme rock crawler side of this sport is just as much a mechanic sport as a driver sport..sure there’s people that just spend the cash.. but most don’t and build their own stuff. So yes, different customer. This whole channel is about the guy that builds…not the guy that turns catalog pages and dials a phone number.

I posted this in my DIY 4x4 group and somebody said "not a fan"... Because of no bump stops. I'm guessing no stops...since you're still in kind of test mode?
@WarPaintOffroad
@WarPaintOffroad Год назад
That day was to measure for bump stops. I think I mentioned that early in in the video. The jeep has bump stops now in the rear. Ram put of time to set them up in the front before this next trip. But they will be installed in the front too. This was literally just a test day to flex it out and see where to set bumps…among other things.

So you did a grizzly rear locker with tone rings and sensors in the rear?? How’s the computer liking that? Because with 12+ Jks I’ve always read you can’t run a auto locker like a grizzly because the computer will freak out. So how did you get around that?

What rear track bar did you go with? My stock track bar is a few inches to short. Im running the 14 bolt in the rear.
@WarPaintOffroad
@WarPaintOffroad Год назад
On the leaf spring rig it didn’t need a track bar. On my rig I used a core 4x4 track bar that I had on my Dana 44’s. I will say that the rom steering track bars work really well. I’ll be swapping to their soon enough.

That drag link looks sketchy as heck with the bolt that long.
@WarPaintOffroad
@WarPaintOffroad Год назад
It’s actually very strong. The bolt is HUGE diameter wise and has almost no pressure on it because of the hydro assist. The only other way to do it would be to get a high steer knuckle that has a too plate and send it over the leaf spring that way. But tbh, it works perfect. I toyed with the idea of making it double sheer and adding more steel…and still might eventually. But like I said, it has almost no pressure on it and the bolt has a 30,000 pound sheer strength. If it didn’t have hydro steering it would be different.
