Jeep XJ Dana 44 Swap In Quince’s 92 Cherokee!

In this episode of Mountain Crawlers, we completely overhaul an 87-89 Factory Jeep XJ rear Dana 44 to replace the Dana 35 in the back of Quince’s 92 XJ. Topped off with 5.13 Yukon Gears and a Spartan Locker this axle will be plenty stout for the 35s on his Jeep! Follow along as we dive into this axle build and get it swapped into his Cherokee.

Keep it up man. I’m over in Albuquerque and it’s nice to see the AZ trails to check out eventually. I have a ZJ that I’ve been stalling on and your videos keep the motivation up. I’m in the shop fixing vehicles all day so it gets hard to come home and work on more problems lol

I have the exact same setup,he’s going to love it,takes a lot of strain off everything I’ve pounded on my Dana 30 with locker and chromoly shafts,it’s been good to me ,6 years with 5:13’s and lunch box lockers..Just make sure you check the carrier bolts after break in and on diff fluid changes..

Hi benji! Being that the carrier was in so tight, could it have been set up wrong. Ive never seen one that tight. Quince is lucky to have you,as his mechanic lol.

I actually have had one or two axles about this tight before in the past. I believe it’s someone setting it up with a housing spreader and adding too much preload on top of that. When the spreader is removed the housing will relax back to normal and really squeeze those bearings in tight.

I think the truss welding had more to do with the excessive preload than anything.

That’s one thing that crossed my mind. Everything went back in okay though and ring gear runout was just fine. Tubes checked out to be straight too.

Nice work ! Your going to put 5.13 in the Dana 30?? Aren’t you worried about the ring and pinion with 35’s?

We will cross that bridge when we get there. The gears have a lifetime warranty at least. I mentioned the stripping at the end of the video.

Awesome video man. I’ve been kinda trying to decide if swapping to a d44 is better than the 8.25 because if I do the KJ disc brakes that helps keep the axle in place if I ever break a C clip and it’s 29 spline already I believe since I have a 99 so pretty similar in strength I feel like but idk

29 spline 8.25 is plenty strong man if you already have it I’d do go with the liberty disc brakes like you mentioned. This 44 was a great upgrade from his d35 though!

@@mountaincrawlers8 for sure I am sure it was an amazing upgrade with re-gear and still adding the spartan locker. And ya I really think if I do the disc breaks and do some sort of a lunch box style locker it will be plenty for me to run my 31s tell I can afford maybe 35s for sure

They also came in a cherokee wagoneer that thing with 4 head lights that's awful ugly They have 44 front and rear but are rarer than hens teeth as i think they only made like 5k total from 84 to 90 only ever seen one in person they have every factory option top to bottom

They actually have 44 rear 30 front in the wagoneer. There was a factory front 44 option in the xj but it’s extremely rare and I’ve yet to still see one in person. I have 3 or 4 wagoneer xjs rolling around my town and they all have Dana 30s in the front. Also have a personal friend that owns one.

@mountaincrawlers8 ok i stand corrected the one saw was 44 front and rear guy said he got that way so figured they were all that way being the flag ship vehicle

@@jeremyhanna3852 totally understandable man I’ve just been around tons of xjs and never seen a factory 44 front in person. But they were an extremely rare option. Can’t remember the year though.
