A beautiful story about your father-in-law (the machinist on a ship). A gear on the ship lost some teeth and the crew couldn't navigate back into the port. So he welded a bead where the missing gear teeth were. He filed the gear teeth and reinstalled it so the crew could get safely back into the port.
I have a similar situation on my 1990 XJ. But just cut off the swaged part and clamp on a fresh section of rubber tubing. I don't have to mess with the troublesome fitting back at the transmission.
I Deleted mine completely and replaced with unit for Hose fitting and replaced all hard lines with Flex hose and also installed a External cooling unit with a 12 v dc fan and installed it not in front of the Radiator but under the floor of the drivers side and then ran the flex house to the Radiator and back with same Connector and Flex hose back to the Automatic . I hate the quick disconnects and will never use them ever again. Jeep runs 15 Degrees cooler and gear shifting is normal.
