Can’t remember his name, but the Judo instructor of Bruce’s first student was asked about Bruce’s grappling and ground game, and the guy basically said he was decent at stand-up grappling, he sucked at ground game grappling, but he was too fast for most guys to be able to reliably take him down, which I thought was cool.

@@RiveBassCovers But this movie timeline is different, IP man should be about 20 years younger than the real life, so in Ip man 1, he was about 25, and in this one, he was around 50. If you are talking about real life time line, Bruce was in Hong Kong making movies in early 70, instead of teaching martial art in san francisco.

I am so glad you pointed out the nunchuck thing. Lol. If I'm not mistaken, he was really big on the idea of having the whip stick to wrap around blocks on the half beat around this time? (Which I assume is actually supposed to be 1964 given the exhibition, so I think this is the year he would've met Dan but not yet been actively training with him.)

Even in the alley street fight, none of the kicks are particularly high, and he never spins. Danny Chan can pull off the hands, but not the legs. He was a dancer first, which made it easier for him to transition to martial arts, but yeah, I’m sure. I’m huge into the fine details of fighting mechanics.

This movie is one giant Chinese propaganda tract. As a JKD rpractioner since 2005 I still can't watch this movie without a clear contentious. That being said, who doesn't love Bruce ? The casting is good but this sequence ignores all the Wing Chun he practiced. At this point in his life this fight would look much more like Wing Chun and not like the films he did later. Had he incorporated fencing footwork and savate kicks yet?

I appreciate the bit about Guru Dan and the nunchaku, but I think a little wording difference may be needed. I wouldn’t necessarily think Guru Dan was the one who exposed him to the nunchaku, just the one who trained him. Guru Dan recounted that he taught Bruce a set and Bruce practiced it obsessively overnight to perfection for filming the next day. I’m sure Bruce would’ve been exposed to the nunchaku earlier than meeting Guru Dan. However, I’m not saying he trained with them pre-Inosanto badassery, but I’m sure he’d be aware of them and a few other flails from Chinese and other Asian martial arts. Anyway, I loved this movie and appreciate your take on it, especially the technical aspects that they included. Oh and the collabs are fantastic. I particularly like how you’re warming Icy Mike up to JKD 😂

It’s a shame there isn’t enough media depictions of Dan Inosanto as there is Bruce Lee. The man’s life is filled with marital arts movie tropes: trained since a kid, a part of a prestigious military group, brought validity to an obscure martial art, and spends his elder years being a grandmaster of multiple martial arts

I wonder if this guy is an actual licenced JKD instructor? I have met them before and they are not versed in Wing Chun. I can say this as I am a Master of 4 styles of Wing Chun. Bruce Lee used the Sui Nim Tao and Chum Cui with the 4 sections of the Mook Jong he was taught and based JKD off this. And as I am aware there are only 7 actual authorised JKD instructors on the Planet i.e., authorised by Bruce Lee. So, is this gent a JKD instructor or a You Tuber that practices what he sees on videos?

@@kidddogbites I have an affinity for Kali and Escrima, as my master trained with Dan Inosanto; Ip Chun; Ip Ching; Samuel Kwok; Sabhir Ahktar; Gary Lamb; Royce Gracie; Robert Chu; William Chung; and many others - especially in the Wing Chun World. I was personally awarded my master instructorship from Ip Chun and Samuel Kwok. This is why I put the comments on that I did as he did not know the name of the techniques that were obvious to see, but obviously difficult for this gent to define in his "expertise". He doesn't seem genuine to me. Sorry to berate him but he is uneducated in the field of Wing Chun and what Bruce Lee was taught of Wing Chun - which was not all of it BTW. Bruce Lee was only taught Sui Lim Tao, Chum Cui; and 4 sections of the Mook Jong. If this gent realise this he would know how Bruce adapted what he knew in to Wing Chun to develop intercepting fist. But, as this gent does not appreciate this he has no understanding of how interception works - as interception with the fist is a concept from Wing Chun i.e., hitting through the hit. If this gent cannot pinpoint the area you look so you can intercept then he is going to continue trying to intercept the opponents attack rather than what his interception should be intercepting - which isn't the opponent attack BTW.
