Jeff Beck is not the only player affected this way by Jimi. IIRC Mike Bloomfield once lived in an apt. in SF across the street from a park where Jimi was playing a small concert one day, went over and saw him. Says he came back home in a sort of stunned daze, got his guitar, and packed it away, reasoning that there was no longer any reason ever to play guitar again. Like Jeff, literally wondering what to do next for a living. Rick Wakeman did the same thing to me with the piano. Bastard.
RIP Jeff Beck! Your work here on this planet is done! Go join your musician friends in heaven! We will miss you, but please know your music and influence with continue throughout the ages! May God Bless, you were one talented dude! ~cz~
Amen to that. Glad you set the record straight. The Yardbirds deserve to be remembered as one of the top British invasion bands along with the Beatles The Who, The Stones, and The Kinks.
I am a musician and most guitarists I know who play rock all say the Beck is and was one of the influential greats on par with Hendrix, Van Halen, etc. He is in my opinion one of the best rock guitarists ever and he is very underrated because he doesn't care about the fame aspects. He plays with his thumb the way that really good guitarists do. His tone and style are simply all Beck. Like Trane or Bonham he has his own sound that is recognizable right off the bat.
Half-excited. Half-nervous. Page probably knew Beck was indifferent to the induction, and had no idea how Jeff would react once he got to the microphone.
what will Jeff say when he accepts his very own award @ the RRHOF on 4/4/2009? its a surprise he's showing up for it. its a long time coming and many years too late. a poster below hit the nail on the head, it is the best acceptance speech at any award show ever. from the best guitar player ever....seems fitting.
Ahhh, cute and funny.............he's my fav even though I love the other esp Jimmy Page's song writing. That is one very original acceptance speech, I love it.
@Pre00 I saw the tour when they came to my area. JB did the exact same thing to Stevie as well. If anything, they just both admired eachother so much and even goofed around quite a bit on stage. No competition, just two top notch axemen sharing the spotlight. :)
This is funny...Beck has always been a cheeky cockney in comparison to the other Yardbirds, who were one of the best bands EVER...especially the brief period with Beck & Page...they didn't kick him out, he just couldn't handle the endless touring bands had to do in those days and cracked up... and he SHOULD be proud!
Nice one Jeff, you're a legend. Don't know what everyone's problem is here. Jeff picked the perfect moment to get his own back. Rock stars do drugs and alcohol. If that's such an issue with you then go listen to some Gregorian chant or something.
Always my favorite guitarist, bored by the people he played with, always changes in his bands. Why should he be gracious at the watered down, R&R Hall of Fame? Even the 'franchise', Madonna got in the door last year. What does she have to do with Rock & Roll??? Nothing, just promotion of slick product. Finally Jeff gets in, but it's too late. Soon Disney ilk creations, like Hannah Montana/Milie C. will be on the list to be honored. Best to see Jeff play live, he is truly amazing.
Jimmy Page in 1993 was a little overweight. I never knew that there was a "jelly doughnut" phase that Jimmy experienced. Or was it an "ice cream" phase?...
@itsthemoman Why should Van Halen not be mentioned? He was a pretty innovative musician who played guitar just like Beck and Jimi. He played and people copied him just like the other two. He has his own sound and style and basically created a new way to communicate through the instrument. That sounds like he belongs there to me. Maybe you should go listen to Fair Warning.
@LivingIn1969 - That's a bit illogical. Prince is NOT "one of the worst artists ever to live." Sort yourself out because the only person you're hurting with your anger is YOU. Also, I'd say that ANY person who can play the piano, drums. bass, guitar, harmonica, and other instruments, write ALL of their songs, teach themselves production and also the technical aspects of sampling is most likely not in the bottom pile when thinking of "the worst."
i find it so dumb when people on youtube try to figure out if the guy they are watching is on drugs or not, i doubt page would go there stoned. my opinion
@FredericaBimble are you fucking kidding me man?? u think justin bieber or britney spears or drake write their own songs?? HELL NO. they hire song writers and feed off their music. Beck, Page, Clapton, The Stones, Zeppelin, now you're talking about real songwriting, not fucking prince, tho in his case he probably did write his own stuff.
Beck couldn't handle the pressure of working to deadlines & hectic schedules. To tell you the truth I think he left during their first tour. It's well documented he's unreliable & overly arrogant.
