I think A New World Record is dozens times better than this new album. I have always liked also the Idle Race, The Move and the whole ELO 1970´s period. After that it went too commercial.

if there's one thing I've been a little disappointed with is that his songs are to short. Miss the 4 1/2+ duration that they were back in the day, but even then you couldn't get enough of them.

@Noah Tuel well of course music is subjective. I'm a huge fan of the Beatles too. In my opinion Jeff Lynne stands alongside John Paul George and Ringo. John Lennon himself referred to ELO sons of the Beatles, then when the 3 remaining Beatles wanted someone to reunite them with a demo tape of John's. Who did they choose, Jeff Lynne of course! I'm not saying ELO are better, or Beatles are better, they exist alongside each other, their music is so intertwined by commonalities, it's rare you find a fan of one without being a fan of the other. I love both...and have pictures of each band next to each other hangong on my wall. 👍

you know I have been listening to ELO today and it suddenly hit me for the 1st time how much he sounds like George Harrison. I can't believe I have never put that together before because I have been an big appreciator of both of them for so many years! His voice at times, yes, but mostly the overall feel to Jeff Lynnes music. There's a sweet melancholy to both of them that I adore. Must be why I love them both so much.

@@Erin-uz2gf you have heard too now then... its always been obvious to me. They were very close friends. I'm pretty sure it was George and Jeff that founded the travelling Wilburys as they had so much in common musically. I also think they had a very similar demeanor....outstanding all time musicians but so modest with it....no arrogance ego, or primadona behaviour just their music. Two like minded men with a like minded view and production of brilliant music.

@@paulshepherd1348 I have to agree with you again. They have both given so much beauty to the world. It's always a joy to watch interviews with them (especially Jeff imo because he is so down to earth). They have a real understanding about what it's all about. I think lots of young artists these days could learn buckets (of knowledge) from them. Ego and arrogance seem to be the driving factor in their search for stardom.

I feel like I could have pint with Jeff or George... normal guys. Could you say the same for example about the Galagher brothers ...I'm afraid not.... and what makes it even more sad is that they have never been close to the talent of George and Jeff. Deluded..... with a deluded set of fans.

@@squinteastwood4637 my theory is that it went full pop. There was once people who enjoyed rythm and Melody and depth and skill. But one day a producer had a band with a hit, and the funny thing was, it lacked all of those things. But it had one thing. It had a catchy noise that people wanted to hear. Maybe it was 3 notes, maybe a voice that was altered by computers, or something from a keyboard or old video game. But whatever the noise was, it was getting people to listen. Then steadily it was agreed that for a song to be a hit, it must have certain things like this odd noise, the musicians must also have an intriguing look. The music had to fit the listeners rather than the other way around. Why risk testing a new genre, a new sound, if you can just produce a pop song thats a guaranteed success. So with the appreciation gone, so also left the talent. Music today is more utility than beautiful noise. It's used to fit in. To feel badass. To look cool. To get girls. To get famous. To get that little rush when you hear that goofy noise they put in. Nobody makes or listens to music for the sake of the music itself anymore. It's like making plastic trees and wondering where the pine smell went. Sure, your platic tree is pitch perfect, with a computer that made it's flawlessly smooth edges, but it's not alive, it has no soul, no smell, and like so many modern songs, a machine made it.

You should try Passenger, A Great Big world and First Ais Kit! There's still plenty of melodious music out there, put it's not promoted as much!
