Jeff Waters (ANNIHILATOR) answers fan-submitted questions about his friendship with Dave Mustaine (MEGADETH, METALLICA), Megadeth's RUST IN PEACE record and being asked to join Megadeth.
Yeah well as awesome of a guitarist as Jeff is I love what Marty did with the Rust in Peace solos. I'm sure Jeff would've written great leads for that album as would Dime but Marty......I don't know. I'm probably biased because his solos from Rust are stuck in my head but they're just such classics. I like the way things turned out in this timeline. I guess somewhere in the parallel Universe there's a Rust in Peace album with Dime and in another with Jeff and they sound awesome :D
My favourite Annihilator lineup is The Alice In Hell lineup from 1989 with Randy Rampage Jeff Waters Anthony Greenham/Dave Scott Davis Wayne Darley Ray Hartmann
@thedddemon He stayed with Annihilator to make the biggest-selling Annihilator record titled "Never, Neverland" in 1990. Set the World on Fire was an Annihilator record released in 1993.
Jeff certainly had the talent and style for Megadeth, though I think working with Mustaine would've challenged him to be an even better player and would have pushed him creatively. On the flipside, Dave would've been challenged too, as Jeff is more rhythm guitar oriented than most Megadeth players have been.
I absolutly love Megadeth's lineup and what they're doing. Love Thirteen and Super Colider. They have like 20 albums now, they can't always sound like Rust in Peace or Countdown, they're evolving and I love it.
Thanks, Jeff, you were crucial and extremely helpful getting Me and 3 kids backstage to meet Mr. Mustaine in Calgary 10 years ago, Dave told us about when he met you and he spoke highly of you. I told him it was an honour meeting him and I owe you for arranging a meeting of such magnitude. All while Dave is showing us his socks and underwear backstage, (one of the boys asked about travelling and clothing) Funny side note.. we met Alexi backstage that day, he saw me with 3, 8 year old boys and came up and talked with us. My son and his two friends were over the moon about Alexi...(and still are) RIP Alexi \m/__@__\m/

I even have a story about that your saying, the "most of you would remember every word Dave Mustaine said to you, if you were a Megadeth fan". I happen to be both die-hard Annihilator and Megadeth fan, and when Dave was signing books in Helsinki, I had my Annihilator trucker cap on. Dave looked up to it and said "Is that Annihilators'? I know Jeff Waters, he's a crazy cool guy." Most awesome thing that has happened in my life. + I got a handshake from him.
Well - I hope it happens and Dave with do something with Jeff. Two of my my favorite musicians and composers, legends of thrash going for it eventually. Please do this

No wonder I like Rust in Peace so much and still listen to it along with Alice and Neverland, but "Metal" has stuck in my stereo for a few years too. I love these stories of great metal bands listenning and being inspired by each other. Metallica was also secretly listenning to Megadeth. LOL We are the "ARMY OF ONE" song, says it all.
I'm glad you didn't end up in Megadeth, Jeff. No disrespect to the other bands but you're easily my favourite thrash guitarist and Annihilator will always be the best thrash band in my opinion.
I'm agree with Waters, Marty was the man for the Megadeth Job Yes, we have Jeff Waters, Jeff Loomis and Dimebag Darrell... Such Guitar Monsters, but nowdays we have Monster bands thanks that this 3 Guys never came to Megadeth (that it wouldn't be Bad too) Megadeth, Annihilator, Nevermore and Pantera Yeah, Megadeth with 3 of This Guys can Sound awesome
I originally always thought that the Alice In Hell album had a Rust In Peace vibe big time, but than some time later I found out that Rust In Peace had a Alice In Hell vibe. I can't remember why I thought Rust In Peace came out before Alice In Hell did. I love both albums alot and both are easily in my top ten favorite Thrash Metal albums of all time.
For sure, Jeff's my favorite of them all. I sure do miss Mike Mangini though. I listen to Annihilator's Metal album almost everyday since I got it last July. I don't blame Mangini for going to Dream Theater though, he's a really good fit for them. Annihilator is one of the biggest under rated bands ever. I wish they would tour Canada, I would travel to a big city to see them.
YES YES Jeff and Dave combined.... hopefully it would lean far towards the older stuff and not be a creation of the newer music. Nothing worse waiting for "it" and then being let down in such a way!!!
Hahahaha ... Jeff is such a great guy !!! AMAZING guitarist and funny as f**k !!! I'd love to have been in Annihilator, just to work with, Jeff !!! Same kinda story with myself and Extreme Noise Terror ... great guys, great band, just wanted to do my thing, so 100% understand Jeff's decision.
My favourite Annihilator lineup is The Alice In Hell lineup from 1989 with Randy Rampage Jeff Waters Anthony Greenham/Dave Scott Davis Wayne Darley Ray Hartmann
@thedddemon whats wrong with Set the World on Fire, have you listened to the guitar work at all on it. Pretty amazing!!!!!!!, Drums was amazing and tasty as well. But you wouldnt know since you did not know that Never, Neverland was the second album.
I was talking about Chris Broderick, but they're all good in their own ways. I absolutly love their lineup now. We can try to compare them to each other, but we must keep in mind Chris Broderick plays a 7 string. Maybe Marty does now though. I agree that Jeff is also amazing in Annihilator. I love them all. Cant wait to see Megadeth live now. Take care.
God I know and I agree that you should keep things as a band apart but you should do a Collab I will Jizz for the rest of my life you're the two best guitar players I listened to
HOLY FUCK here i am typing annihilator metal.com and seeing jeff talking about mustaine and megadeth, these two bands are my favorite bands of all time this was such a shock to see this.. iv heard dimebag was auditiond and so was loomis.. and i didnt realy care for them.. why ? becuase they never had the DETH sound thats inside jeff ! those technical unobvious chord changes. aw man im is shock and awe here, if mustaine and waters do a song together i might shit my pants its 1 of my dreams.
I think king of the kill or off that CD. im not usre I think it was Good marty joined Megadeth, BUT once he left in 2000 Jeff should have joined the band, but oh well he was more comfortable doing his own thing.
My favourite Annihilator lineup is The Alice In Hell lineup from 1989 with Randy Rampage Jeff Waters Anthony Greenham/Dave Scott Davis Wayne Darley Ray Hartmann
I'm not sure I got this. Mustaine wanted Jeff to learn and record the B-side of Peace Sells... send the recording to him and if he had liked it, Mustaine might have considered re-recording an Annihilator song???? I don't understand. If Mustaine wanted to record an Annihilator song, why didn't he just ask Jeff "Can I record one of your songs?"? Why should Jeff have had to record a Megadeth song for that?
My favourite Annihilator lineup is The Alice In Hell lineup from 1989 with Randy Rampage Jeff Waters Anthony Greenham/Dave Scott Davis Wayne Darley Ray Hartmann
the b side of PC is counjuring ,bad omen, wake up dead and my last words beTs fucking shit ever i wonder why they didnt audition so far so good so what songs ? like into the lungs or the cupcake song (set the word afire) OR the best album of all time KIMB perhaps rattlhead, looking down the cross CHOSEN ONES. man my wet dreams are mustaine doing an oldschool record with metallica (i know i know) and mabe a guitarist reionion record with poland(iknow he's in TSHF), friedman, and young LOVE U ALL
Well, he is a smart guy, probably has some investments and I can imagine he paid the whole house, or he ...how do you say it... makes monthly payments for it. Why is it so weird if a guy like Jeff has a nice house? That's a completely normal thing. And besides - we see only 3 walls of it, I don't think it's overdone like some houses we saw on MTV's Cribs...
You know, Dave should just stop waiting for an opportunity to record an album with shity Metallica and get in touch with Jeff... I would love to see Megadeth and Annihilator in the same stage. Maybe Dave and Jeff should do a world tour together (yeah, Annihilator opening of course) and create an album too!!, and I as a fan, will keep kicking Mustaine's forums with the same idea
My favourite Annihilator lineup is The Alice In Hell lineup from 1989 with Randy Rampage Jeff Waters Anthony Greenham/Dave Scott Davis Wayne Darley Ray Hartmann
I’m not sure if it would of worked with Dave and Jeff?? Big egos? I also think Jeff is too good for Megadeth...He’s in a whole different world when it comes to Metal....Love both of them though 😎🤘🤘😎
I hope y'all make a song together one day. Just put Dave on vocals. No offense but not the biggest fan of Jeff as the front man. Dudes got balls for stepping up though
My favourite Annihilator lineup is The Alice In Hell lineup from 1989 with Randy Rampage Jeff Waters Anthony Greenham/Dave Scott Davis Wayne Darley Ray Hartmann
I don't think Jeff and Dave would've made the best team in the long run. Jeff seems extraordinarily healthy for a metal musician who has been working for 30 years, having been sober for the most of it etc, whereas Dave Mustaine went totally nuts with drugs around 1990.
I have been rocking the 6 string since the mid 80's myself and in my opinion Jeff is being quite humble here..Jeff far as I am concerned you are a much better player than Dave particularly in the area of lead. Mustaine could not pull that lead off as you do here...not a chance!
I am kind of glad Jeff Waters did not join, or else Marty could not of showed his amazing talent. Jeff Waters is great, but probably not what Dave would be looking for. :)
omg jeff is so much a more talented guitarist than dave but i like dave but as far as proffessionalism goes and guitar riffs and everything else guitar wise it has to be jeff
