Jefferson Airplane White Rabbit REACTION! 

Should’ve listened to the studio version! This song is a very difficult vocal feat and the studio version is definitely the best one! Goosebumps every time I listen to it

The significance of this song is that it was one of the first songs to just lean hard into psychedelia. "Alice" was a slang term for LSD, which was just starting to hit the counterculture in a big way (Alice in Wonderland being a favorite book of the early acidheads, and because the "LS" in "LSD" kinda sounds like "Alice"). "Feed your head" is both an Alice in Wonderland reference and a command to drop some acid and free your mind.

This reaction was a hoot. I can't figure out why young generations don't love this song as much as we do. Maybe we have heard it so many times on the radio that it has become a part of us. I love this song. I love Grace Slick's dramatic singing. I love the marching drum beat. I love the Spanish feel to the guitar. And of course the lyrics are great fun.

I think this version is not the same as the original album, it sounds like another recording. Either way, Grace Slick has a phenomenal voice. In her solo career there is a beautiful song that shows her vocal power and includes a beautiful musical arrangement: El Diablo. When you can, do a reaction to this masterpiece, please.

It’s a metaphor for the opening of the doors of perception to alternate ‘realities’ enabled by LSD. Similar to the Alice In Wonderland and Matrix stories…reality is forever changed after the experience

P.S. #2. "Feed your head" was a slogan back in the psychedelic era, referencing the idea that magic mushrooms can impart wisdom and understanding.

Reading the original "Alice in Wonderland" is a trip in itself. This song will make so much sense when you read the story. Also, the last line in the song, "Feed your head" maybe her reference to drugs, but it also means acquire knowledge, educate yourself, pay attention to developing your mind. Physically people age, but a well stocked mind will always remains an asset and a store of pleasure.

There's a reason she sounds so different from one song to the other song. They were painting a picture, telling a story, say what you will, in both songs. They're telling you a story. That's what makes this music so good. Also, the White Rabbit you showcased was a live version, I assume. Listen to the studio version. Its incredible.

This song is in the form/style of a Spanish Bolero, and it encompasses a crescendo just like Ravel's famous Bolero. Would love to hear a modern song in the same form.

The entire song is their own take on Lewis Carroll's book: Alice & the white rabbit; Disney made "Alice in wonderland" after the same book but geared it towards a children's story. Jefferson airplane did their own version of the classic novel in song. You guys totally should've listened to the studio version -and y'all should really read L.Carroll's book "Alice & the white rabbit" 💯😎

As a very young child hearing this song playing in the house, my 5 or 6 year old brain dug it, and considered the sound "scary". 55 now, and still feel the same, it's up there with the great classics and Grace Slick was so damn cool. Did anyone else have to read "Go Ask Alice" in Junior High School? You two are so right; the opening very much sounds like the Doors.

Jack (bass) and Jorma (guitar) had a long-lived side project, Hot Tuna, more bluesy and a great showcase for their talents.

Don't forget, a number of Bay area bands at this time (66-67) including these guys and The Grateful Dead were playing Ken Kesey's "Acid Tests" regularly. LSD wasn't illegal yet - hence the birth of "Psychedelic Rock".

Even back in the 60s we were hip to the message of 'the system'. Remember when the system is out to get you, 'feed your head' be informed.

Alice in Wonderland references abound in this. The White Rabbit is a character and Alice eats and drinks things to make her bigger and smaller (read the book). While in the real world, Alice was a pseudonym for LSD and they were saying take LSD to expand you mind ("feed your head"). This band, Jefferson Airplane, was well-know as one of the creators of psychedelic rock.

Grace was a female pioneer in rock. You can't "get" "White Rabbit" without an understanding of "Alice In Wonderland". Familiarity with the counter-culture of the '60s helps, too.

This was written by Jefferson Airplane frontwoman Grace Slick, who based the lyrics on Lewis Carroll's 1865 children's book Alice In Wonderland (officially Alice's Adventures in Wonderland). Like many young musicians in San Francisco, Slick did a lot of drugs, and she saw a surfeit of drug references in Carroll's book, including the smoking caterpillar, the mushroom, and lots of other images that are pretty trippy. She noticed that many children's stories involve a substance of some kind that alters reality, and felt it was time to write a song about it.

Guys, Fear and loathing in Las Vegas....When the white rabbit peaks, throw the radio in the bathtub....legendary movie! And song is about drugs and that's it!

Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass are classics of children's literature, written by Lewis Carroll.

"Old school" 1960s rock isn't the least bit stale, as the term would imply. It remains fresh and vibrant all these years later.

I was lucky enuff to be up in New York when woodstock 94 was going on, got to see chilli peppers n Peter Gabriel, best night of my life !!!

First time I heard this song was in the "Platoon" soundtrack back in 86. A film about the Vietnam war. It always gave me goosebumps and a massive feeling of sadness. It made me think about the alienation the war can bring to you. Alienation of your own soul /self. You're in a reality which is so bizarre that it's as if you're in a totally different world. A world where the things you always took for granted and the moral compass you always followed no longer apply.

Although I was a teenager when this song came out I would've never gotten as much interpretation as you guys and I've heard it a million times since.

I was 12 going on 13 when the song was released. Loved it then love it now. As a pre teen I took the lyrics as a literal interpretation of Alice in Wonderland. Listening to it in my twenties and beyond it is easy to read the drug reference. Then as I have got older the deeper meaning of following your dreams becomes clearer. Love Grace Slick’s voice. Love the music as it grows in intensity as the song progresses I have read the music was inspired by Ravel’s Bolero

The analysis at the end is pretty on-point. The late 60’s, early 70’s psychedelic culture was all about freeing your mind and casting off the constraints of societal expectations and rules. They did a lot of drugs with the goal of altering perception and freeing the mind, etc. So that’s exactly what White Rabbit is all about.

Back in the late seventies I moved into a house that Jefferson Airplane had lived in before me. On the beach just north of San Francisco. The first pee I went to take in the house and I lifted the seat cover and glued to the bottom of the cover was the gold record to White Rabbit.

This is also in the classic Viet Nam movie Platoon. It’s an incredible scene when they are smoking weed through the barrel of a gun. The song is much more powerful in that context..If you never saw it, you need to watch it. It’s also an incredible cast of actors.

I was a little kid when this came out on the radio. The whole thing scared the shit out of me! Her voice and the instrumentation told my little 6 year old brain, Bad. Not good! Fast forward to 6th grade when I read the book, "Go Ask Alice," and then the song made sense but I still was uneasy about it. Now as an adult, I appreciate it for the context and the time period it came from. Fuck, Grace Slick had those scary ass eyes...she still does! Thanks for the video, Gentlemen. Happy New Year!

Sanctuary does a metal version on their debut album, Refuge Denied, from 1987. The album was produced by Dave Mustaine, and he does the solo on the beginning of White Rabbit. Great version I highly recommend.

I’m sure it’s been covered by now but… You guys obviously never read Lewis Carroll. The Matrix (and this song) got all of that stuff from his books. Namely, Alice in Wonderland. Edit: lol the second I restarted the video George called it.

This and Somebody to Love both were from Grace's earlier band Great Society and the album "Conspicuous Only In Its Absence". That they brought with them when some of them joined Jefferson Airplane. My mother had the Great Society album when I was a kid and it's got a several other songs I really love.

My favorite song of all time. I was 10 when this came out and 4 years later I saw them and the Grateful Dead live here in Houston. Been rocking ever since. Over 190 live shows behind me. Mushroom tea and brick weed of the 70's are a fond memory... New Subscriber...

I'm pretty sure this is a live version (or live vocals at least), which contributes to the dated sound of the production. I'm basing that on the audience applause at the end and some of Grace Slick's vocal phrasing is different here than what's on the album. The song definitely still sounds like it's from the 60's and I'm not sure it would change your opinion of the song but it has a fuller stereo sound on the album.

Jack (The Bass Player) and Jorma (The Guitar player) formed Hot Tuna after Jefferson Airplane broke up. The rest of the band formed Jefferson Starship. Hot Tuna was more Folk, Blues and Jam oriented and Starship was more Pop Rock oriented. Both bands went on to have big careers. Starship had big radio/movie hits with the songs Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now and We Bult This City. The two founding members of Hot Tuna are 78 & 82 and in still play live. Neither one show any signs of slowing down or hanging it up. I highly recommend you check out both bands.

I always took the "feed your head" lyric to reference taking LSD to expand your mind. I used LSD in my late teens for that purpose, and it does work, but the trick is you have to use it for that purpose, and not to just get high. LSD is very responsive to your mental/emotional state. If you use it to party, or get high, you're much more likely to have a bad trip and F yourself up. I tripped alone and meditated with it. The last time I did it, the trip told me I'd achieved my purpose, and to do anymore would be harmful. I've not touched it since.

I love Grace Slick's vocals on this song. It really showcases her range. Another great song, after they changed their name to Jefferson Starship, is Stranger. It showcases how well Grace and the new male vocalist Mickey Thomas sound together. Plus, it's got a kick-ass groove and an awesome guitar solo
