democracynow.org - We look at the growing national debate over racial identity sparked by the story of Rachel Dolezal. A Washington state civil rights advocate and educator, Dolezal resigned her post as president of the Spokane chapter of the NAACP on Monday amid reports she falsely identified as black. The controversy began when Dolezal’s parents told reporters their daughter is white, and shared photographs of her as a child. On Tuesday, Dolezal broke her silence, saying she has identified as black since a young age. We host a roundtable discussion with four guests: Stacey Patton, senior enterprise reporter for The Chronicle of Higher Education; Lacey Schwartz, producer/director of the documentary film "Little White Lie"; Linda Martín Alcoff, professor of philosophy at the City University of New York and author of several books; and Jelani Cobb, associate professor of history and director of the Africana Studies Institute at the University of Connecticut.

Maybe being black is just a state of mind?
@snomelc920J
@snomelc920J 9 лет назад
Paul Frederick it's both a state of mind and social perception. If you appear black it over rides the state of mind. If you don't appear black but have a black state of mind do to social engineering or self infliction then you can be black unless you are exposed as a fraud having white parents then the perception takes precedence.
@1pcfred

Intel-Pick Perception is reality. It is a difficult concept for any of us to fully appreciate though. The fact is evolution has carefully crafted us to not experience the full effect reality would have on us if indeed we were subjected to it. It is a coping mechanism. One most of us are not even aware of. We live out of sight, and out of mind.

This was the best explanation I have heard as to why what she did is wrong, misleading, and a disservice to not only herself but to those who she says has an infinity for.

I feel sad for both Rachel and her parents. She should still apologize for the deceit, The Howard University thing would make anyone mad especially if they were discriminating over her pregnancy, so she brought up her biology. Her working for Black, marrying black men and having black siblings and children, made a utopic race confusion and entrenchment in her soul hence her identifying as BLACK. If she apologize for the NAACP, and her parents she would be welcome by many.

There certainly is a painful history re the range of complexion within families. Firsthand I've seen family members ostracized within the family due to their (too dark or too light) complexion. I've seen a mother & grandmother disown her own offspring because they were too dark & I've seen parent’s denying their "too light" children! It’s extremely hurtful to be an outcast in your own family due to something completely beyond your control. Something as rudimentary as the amount of melanin in your skin!!

I agree! I am a dark skin black woman who experienced racism outside my home. I am very fortunate to have a wonderful MOM and Wonderful grandparents that made me feel so beautiful and I am so grateful to them for instilling in me that " you are beautiful " and never let anyone tell you otherwise. This made me who I am today. I feel I am a smart, likeable, confident person. All because of how I was treated with nothing but love. I have a wonderful husband of 21 years and 2 children that adore me. Colorism is a problem within the black community. It is ridiculous!

This was a great interview! I have to say, the more I hear Black people defend her (Black men), the more disappointed I become. What she feels and what her motivations are are the least important thing about all of this. No one denies that she did great work... but she could have done it as a White person. She _should_ have done it as a White person. You can't have people who aren't Black claiming to be Black, which is what she did! Black people, _real_ Black people can't run away from their race when it's convenient, which is what she did when she filed a lawsuit for discrimination against her as a White woman! Tim Wise is a White ally. Penny Hess is a White ally. Michael Moore is a White ally. She could have been a White ally just like them. Some Black people want to give her a pass because she's done more work to help Blacks than many Blacks have done to help Blacks. I get that, but she didn't need to be Black to do it! I don't know what's so hard to understand about that. The fact is, she would have done more good addressing either the Black people who are victims of racism and discrimination or the White people who perpetrate it... AS A WHITE WOMAN. She does no one any favors by pretending to be Black. No one. _Especially_ not Black people who are already subject to colorism issues. All it does is continue to disenfranchise Black people. I don't think anyone thinks she's a bad person and I don't think anyone is disappointed in the excellent work she's done on behalf of Black people. Even so: She. Is. White. She's White. She can't be Black anymore than a Black person can be White. Heck, even when Black people try to be White (through action or appearance) they end up looking foolish. This is just as foolish. Foolish and unnecessary.

Joseph Kerr thank you! THANK YOU! And as someone who is half African American, I've struggled my entire life looking to be embraced by my own community. I don't know my other half. My mom is black and that's who raised me. My stepfather is black. It's all I know. But when people look at me, I get full Hispanic or half Hispanic half middle eastern. And while I don't mind that bc I do get a peek inside how middle easterners are treated, I still have always yearned to be accepted and fit in with the black community. I haven't experienced the same amount or even some of the same kinds of racial discrimination that my mom and stepfather have experienced since they are black in appearance but those who did know my parents were black and those who found out that I was black have called me the n word, have prohibited their children from associating with me, and have attempted to place me in remedial courses in school. As far as the police, I feel that I've only been profiled as a Hispanic person and even the South Carolina DMV checked me off as a Hispanic voter when I failed to mark the checkbox. Although my family have touted that, as someone who is light skinned, I have greater opportunities and less chance of being discriminated against - people that look at me don't see white or black and so any discrimination I may face is based around Hispanic or middle eastern origin. But my main issue is that I've often wished that I was a bit darker when I was younger so I would fit in and not look out of place in groups or pictures- and this woman just claimed an experience she didn't have so she could perpetrate a fraud and it's very unfair and very hurtful. And it's very unnerving that there are those in the black community that want to give this woman a pass who used her whiteness to sue an HBCU and then switched all for her benefit. Faking hate crimes is an insult to every Black person who had been the victim of hate crime and I don't think our community is that desperate for "good deeds and things" that we should excuse not only the fact that she lied and manipulated us but also destroyed her own parents who did nothing but raise her and give her things many of the children in our community don't have so she could be successful. It's just not ok. And if the roles were reversed we'd all be up in arms.

Joseph Kerr My main issue is her reasoning for her thinking. She hasn't once given a proper explanation for her thinking she is black. I truly think she is suffering a mental disorder.

I agree with what this man is saying wholeheartedly... And I also feel sorry for her. I wonder why? What was in it for her? My understanding of the details is: -It started young. -She had adopted siblings that were black. -Her parents outed her on TV. -She was long estranged from them for some reason... -She has spoken of abuse in the family previously, which would mean she was the only bio child of cold, betraying, abusive parents....? -Perhaps she identified with her black siblings as a way to separate herself from her parents and fit in with her siblings. Then once that ball got rolling... I don't know, but there is more to this story. She did good work for the black community. No-one has said otherwise. There has to be room left for her to redeem herself. May she deeply reflect, atone for her errors, and find her way back in an open and honest way.

maeve quinn Y'know... people can praise her work and condemn her deception simultaneously. No one's saying she's a bad person. Some people (like myself) are just saying that she can't be Black. Shouldn't be a big deal.

Helios77711 You might be right. I try to give people the benefit of doubt but I see where you're coming from. Certainly, a person trying to do the right thing wouldn't have done what she did, nor would they continue to blatantly repeat their lies afterward, without any apology to those she deceived and those she hurt.

Well black is black. End of story. It is a concept to non blacks and it is a way of life for them. Black americans have a strong and personal history apart from blacks all over the world. Non blacks need to realize that, and that is we can only conceptualize and pretend to have that way of life, but "blackness" is LIFE for them.

We can't choose the truth. I don't think she's a bad person, and she's done good work for the black community, but she's not black. There are also plenty of ppl who are men, saying they're women, and women saying they are men.

@josephkerr7820

Shawn C Gomez What likely doesn't sit well with you is that this White woman appropriated the Black identity and that some Black people think it's okay because she's done years of good work on behalf of Black people. That uneasy feeling in your gut is an unconscious understanding of the implications this will have on an already discriminated-against, color-struck people, if tolerated. That said, she's not a bad person, but what she did was definitely unnecessary and selfish.

She didn't " appropriate " black identity because black identity is NOT biracial.!!! If anything she is appropriating them by claiming to be black when neither they nor her are black. Yet if they can claim black when they clearly are not, then so should she. What shouldn't sit comfortably with black people is how blazingly this man claims biracials as black, when most of then self identify ( when given the choice and not forced ) as biracial and NOT black !!!

The insult was the deception. However, White kids all over the country have put on aspects of Black culture as their own. In this area, Multiculturalism has been wildly successful. Hip-Hop is an international phenomenon much akin to the "British Invasion" of the 1960's & 70's.
@Danielle-nz9tn

There is a far cry between a white person listening to and enjoying hip hop and this woman thinking she is a black person. This is not multiculturalism. It’s racial appropriation.

Im so confused by this because all its saying that being black in america means you have some percent of Africa ancestry, how much doesn't matter. There have been people who have served on the NAACP who had straight hair blue eyes very light skin .What if this women took a Racial DNA test an she had some African blood in her.I think shes a product of our society blacks who want straight hair lighter skin different color eyes like this women.Look in the BEAUTY supply stores,there is nothing in there that reflects African people, the products in there are to make you look more like this women.
