I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Brett in 1981 in a television production of Macbeth filmed here in Los Angeles. Piper Laurie played lady Macbeth. During the six weeks of production Jeremy was a kind man and a giving actor. I was 18 years old and starting my career. He was kind enough to agree to come give a lecture at my previous high school theatre class. I drove into Hollywood to his home and picked him up and off we went . Me a teenage actor wanting to learn from him and he a world renowned actor willing to teach. For two hours he answered questions and recited dialogue for us. It was a marvelous day and it was always amazing watching him work. For a short time we stayed in touch and I will always think of him kindly.
I met Jeremy the day he did this interview and he was a wonderful guy! So sad that someone so great is not with us any more! Edward Hardwicke too! RIP guys!!!
That's wonderful to read that you actually got to meet him. Just wow. I really like Edward Hardwicke too, and his predecessor on the series was also a very good Watson.
William E. Wright, Jr. Correct, Jeremy one's said:"he wouldn't cross the street to shake the man's hand", but Jeremy was an extrovert and Sherlock was most definitely an introvert, that and some other quirks the man most have had (those are obvious in the books) made Jeremy Brett say that, I'm sure.
William E. Wright, Jr. Agatha Christie said she really detested her best character Hercule Poirot, that she wanted to kill him off many times ➡🔺Spoiler alert⬅ before she eventually did. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had the same relationship with Homes in the end and tried to kill him off in a waterfall in Austria before, fan protest and commercial interests brought him back.
Man the 80s Sherlock Holmes is just the best, I'm still amazed of their dedication to the amount of details for the world props and people at that time, which of course is even better with wonderful actors like Jeremy Brett.
This is a man of superior elegance and beautiful .. an actor pleasant in all its forms .. I could not think of a Sherlock Holmes without his face ... he is the best ..
That he consented to THIS interview says a lot about his character as a man. Gracious, vibrant, and very much one of the classiest and exciting men to act upon the stage. Oh how I miss him. He breezes through this interview and makes sure the host knows he cannot ingratiate himself into his personal life. He had his dark moments, but such a positive man.
Truly an inspirational man. He brings such buoyancy into the room. Everyone has their dark moments, but he did not let those moments define him. He campaigned for a higher understanding of bipolar disorder, and was never afraid of talking about it. That, in itself, is a bold move toward defusing the stigma. Bravo, Jeremy!
The stories may remain faithful to the originals...but that has no bearing on this man's depiction of Holmes. I never saw the appeal. I've seen a number of people play Holmes...I was never quite satisfied with any of them...I DO find both of the Watsons from the tv series believable...One emphasized the warmth and kindness of Watson, while the other seized upon the machismo of the character, being very believable as a retired military man...But Bret was never what I pictured for Holmes...
The tall, dark, handsome Jeremy Brett suffered from rhotacism, dyslexia, an enlarged heart, bipolar and addiction to lithium. His mother died tragically young. He didn’t play but became Sherlock Holmes. He literally shortened his life to complete the series. RIP Mr Brett. Unprecedented. Unique. Unequaled. We are all in your debt.
@@johncook2748 reread what I wrote. He worked through illness and pain in an attempt to complete the series instead of resting and following the doctors instructions. If you look carefully you can see when he was ill and/or bloated.
How lovely Jeremy is! He has such charm and grace. He could have easily got angry or offended but he was wonderful. I love him as a performer, but seeing this has made me appreciate him even more as a human being (if that doesn't sound too gushy!). What a lovely man.
What calls my attention in all the interviews I watch with him is that Jeremy Brett seems to be such a nice guy. A little nutty, extremely friendly and fun to listen to. It makes me feel even more sorry for him, for he had very bad luck indeed: his illness, his wife's death etc. A most peculiar and interesting actor.
What a wonderful actor and a fine fellow he was for certain. A very humble man and this american fan (myself) will always cherish and enjoy his artistry.
Jeremy Brett was the ultimate Sherlock Holmes. His heart was enlarged from Rheumatic fever and he took lithium for bi-polar disorder and smoked 60 a day! He recorded all 41 episodes, towards the end in failing health. He died aged 61 soon after. We are in his debt.
I will always love this man, I never met Jeremy but when he passed I felt like I had lost a dear family member. Jeremy is loved and missed by millions. He is one of the few people during my life that when I think of him being gone I still cry. Rest well Jeremy, God has you in his care.
You don't get serious and intellectual actors like Jeremy Brett any more!, I'm 37 and grew up watching Sherlock Holmes. He absolutely portrays what Holmes should be
Ever read the books? Remember the penetrating, steely gaze? The hawklike features? The square, macho jawline? The towering height? The bone crushing handshake? Which of these did Brett embody the most vividly? Please...he looked like a dirty old man who would be spending his time picking up male prostitutes...
Jeremy Brett was a fine, articulate actor. In the 1979 adaptation of Rebecca - which was shown on the BBC - he played the role of Maxim de Winter to absolute perfection. A pity he had to be interviewed by this boorish oaf. Rest in peace, Jeremy, you beautiful man.
Jeremy Brett had brought Sherlock Holmes to life. I would doubt any other actors could possibly surpass Jeremy Brett. And I would always be curious that if Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be fascinated that Jeremy Brett is more IDEAL than the Sherlock Holmes in his literature.
Just about the dumbest thing ever written....Holmes is a fictional literary character. Who knows him better? The man who CREATED him...or a repellent actor who came along a century later to present the character through the lens of a sleazy old pervert?
dearly missed. this guy touched my heart so quickly and it's just sad to know he's not around anymore... I would love to have been his friend to just listen to him :(...
He was too good for Hollywood, above the scum and drama involved. He dodged a bullet not getting in with the likes of them, doing it his way instead. He's not shallow enough for Hollywood.
I don't think so, Ben's Sherlock and JB's Sherlock are different types and in different periods. BBC Sherlock is in modern time so it is different than ITV Sherlock in Victorian time.
I disagree respectfully, because I think Cumberbatch and Brett are different types of Sherlock Holmes. Brett is the best Sherlock Holmes of the 19th century. No other actor comes close. When the time came to make Sherlock set in the 21st century, the creators of the series and Cumberbatch did something very clever. They did not try to do a Sherlock Holmes of the 19th century, because competing with Brett's Holmes is like Emily Blunt competing with Julie Andrews' Mary Poppins. It just does not work. So instead, they completely remade Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes as a asperger syndrome type (which is very topical) and they created a 21st century context for his cases - and the result was a very entertaining series which did not have the disadvantage of feeling like a retread.
I loved Jeremy so much in Sherlock Holmes that when I heard he had died it shocked me as if he were a member of my family. All my life I thought Basil Rathbone was THE Sherlock, and I have seen all the movies and read the complete works through several times. But after I saw Brett play Sherlock, it is he now that I picture when I read the stories. Rathbone was good, but the way Sherlock was portrayed in the movies was cold and impersonal. Brett brought him to life.
Poor Jeremy Brett has to say "Can I change the subject?" when this vulgar airhead asks about Jeremy's nervous breakdown. Neither the interviewer, the standoffish chick on the couch, nor the TV audience, appreciated the diamond in their presence.
I know right I was so pissed at that part. He knew about Jeremy’s mental health, he knew it was getting worse, he knew that Joan’s death killed Jeremy inside yet, he still rambled on about stuff like drinking. Honestly. I’ve only known about Jeremy for about 2 years as he died way before I was born but I’m so glad I came across him and although I’ve never met him, he seemed like such a gentle and down to earth man and I would do anything for him to come back.
I'm 23...& I'm a fan of Sherlock Holmes stories..well, that's how I have come to know Jeremy brett...& now I'm in love with him...I just can't bear the fact that he left the world before I was born 😭I know I couldn't be with him(💔💔💔)at least I wish we could breath the same air & live in the same world. ..😢...why did the angels took you up to the heavens so early Jeremy 😖😔😭
Jeremy Brett Mr Sherlock Holmes ,You are my favourite actor from the very first time I saw you . You are very Handsome and attractive man . May Your Soul Rest In Peace .
In my opinion, Jeremy Brett is one of the finest actors ever. Actors like him should be stars, not dolts like Paris Hilton or Nicolas Cage. I so miss him and his portrayal of Sherlock. He was the finest, and a good man.
What can one say about Jeremy Brett. The man had suffered terribly in his personal life but had got through it in the end. A gentle and kind human being but also flawed as we all are. Much like his alter ego Sherlock. If Mr Doyle was alive to see Jeremy play Sherlock, I believe he would have been pleased as punch to see his character come alive and played so brilliantly by Jeremy. Brilliant writing and brilliant acting and not let's forget the two other guys who played Watson in the TV series. Both fine actors aswell
You know Jeremy is a class act, trying to be as open and upbeat as possible. All of us have had our battles and losses , albeit it`s our victories we love to share . This fool seems to lock on to Jeremy`s vulnerable side and wont stop till he has drawn blood. Instead of an interview discovering how Brett does it. How he maintains this personna episode after episode a great oppertunity is lost by this shallow attempt at congeniality.
I don't just love this man, I adore him. He embodied Sherlock Holmes like no other, even better than the inimitable Basil Rathbone, who remains relevant to this day. If anyone remembers, Brett was part of the cast on Audrey Hepburn's My Fair Lady, where he played the love struck Freddie Eynsford-Hill. He was a dashing man with a keen intelligence, and his character of Holmes was so deviously developed, it felt so real. This interview was posted in 2007, but Sir Jeremy Brett died in 1995. Peter Jeremy William Huggins (3 November 1933 - 12 September 1995), known professionally as Jeremy Brett, was an English actor. He was a scion of the Cadbury (chocolate) family in UK.
Geez, Jeremy is obviously getting upset talking about what happened during his breakdown, and the interviewer just keeps going! I don't blame Jeremy for asking to change the subject, that man has alot more patience than me, I would have probably said something rather rude, especially as he kept saying that most of it was just Jeremy on booze when Jeremy kept correcting him, saying it wasn't. He can see Jeremy's getting flustered and yet he just keeps going...
I feel so bad for Brett in this interview. Derek Jameson obviously didn't get Brett's true perspective on playing Sherlock Holmes, and besides that, he also spent a long time asking about Brett's depression after his wife died--to the point where Brett had to ask him to change the subject! Abominable job by the interviewer... My heart goes out to Brett in this interview...may he rest in peace.
Jeremy is bueatiful inside and out and a true gentleman. The interviewer should not have pressed on about his illness. It's fine to ask if they agreed on that before the interview but to keep on asking to the point where Jeremy want to change the subject. Ouch. I am just glad he was such good friends with Edward but I think he would have needed a Watson to protect him a bit his whole life long.
I hate the way that interviewer kept trying to talk over Jeremy! JB was so kind and gracious to him despite his interruptions. Ever the gentleman,♥, he will always be remembered.
Brett was simply an angel on earth, he was Holmes, and is the face of the character. The old episodes used to run on my VHS all the time, just as background ambiance.
I am thirty-nine years old, and as a teenager, when I was about fourteen, the Sherlock Holmes series was broadcast on Iranian television, and I really liked it. believe me or not i start whatch this series again just bekause of mr Brett. RIP
What a kind and gracious guest! Because of Sherlock, you half expect to listen to a brooding actor, but he set "Him" aside and brought out the charming thespian.
Batman was done badly for years, then a director created batman begins. He gave us the batman everyone hoped for. Well, jeremy Brett gave us the sherlock homes that technology and cgi and effects will never be able to improve on. It was absolutely brilliant. And his own health suffered and coincided with the parallel story of homes 'candle lit at both ends' victorian excess. Needs to be recognised more.
Derek Jameson, I'd completely forgotten about him.... what an arse he was. Annoying and patronising.. his favourite line, "Do they mean me, they surely do".
Can't stand the interviewer. He's desperatly trying to be funny and getting some gossip out of Jeremy Brett....... "Can we change the subject?" :D Well done Mr. Brett!
Absolutely the truest Holmes ever. He does Holmes' combination of distant intellect, high Victorian moral sense, English distaste for emotionalism, superbly controlled rage... all very finely combined. Absolutely the truest.
The best Sherlock Holmes ever! Love Jeremy Brit. We all are human, people trying to forget somethings in life then to keep discussing it to the whole world..miss Jeremy RIP
Jeremy Brett. What a wonderful human being. His gestures mannerisms great style made his Sherlock overshadow even the dynamic Basil Rathbone. What an beautiful human being. Sad to mark his passing. Go quietly Angel. Heaven awaits.
I'm really disgusted by this interviewer insisting that Brett's illness was related to alcohol addiction when he clearly told him that it was his wife's sudden death and overwork. Basically, he was clinically depressed. The interviewer's insistence on talking about that difficult time of his life forced Brett to politely ask if they could move on. Btw: Brett's cause of death some years later was heart failure related to a damaged heart from a childhood illness. In the final episodes of the Holmes series, you could see the toll his illness was having on him.
Always liked Jeremy Brett playing Sherlock Holmes I've watched it for years and never get tired of watching his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. Mitchell bovard USA
Sherlock Holmes by sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Feluda by the greatest Satyajit Ray ...are the best detectives for me ...and Jeremy Brett is the best Sherlock Holmes ever 😊😊...a fan of Sherlock Jeremey Brett from India ❤️
