JEREMY BRETT ON SHERLOCK HOLMES By John C. Tibbetts London, Wyndham Theater September 30, 1988 The pics of Jeremy Brett are from the book "The Roll with Jeremy Brett" by Marcus Tylor The pics from the play were found in the Internet.
He is so humble the way he speaks of his characterization of Holmes. I don't think he realized just how wonderfully amazing he was and that the public viewed him as the best quintessential Holmes ever!
For me personally I could listen to him talking endlessly for hours acting or not, every delivery is timeless, has a meaning and a reasoning behind it, his English and his class were second to none! RIP, Sir !
Jeremy was also the best Maxim De Winter in the BBC Rebbecca 1979. His Holmes is sublime and unsurpassed. I could listen to his voice all day. Goodnight Sweet Prince.....
Just finished his biography. So many insights into his childhood, his family, his horrid time at Eton, his Rheumatic fever, his personal relationships, and of course, his battle with bipolar disorder. It’s amazing he accomplished so much in his 61 years. An amazing actor, family man, and humble person at that. He was a generous, thoughtful, kind soul. Simply amazing that we were lucky enough share an Earthly portion with him, on the ribbon of time.🌹
Love Sherlock "Jeremy Brett" Holmes. He's the only actor to make Holmes a loveable human being, he went beyond the novel and added his character and compassion to the role. Sherlock ends at Brett. No one will surpass his representation.
I read the books as a teenger and fell in love with them. Then, many many years later I found Brett on youtube and finally saw the Granada series. He absolutely matched the Holmes in my mind. He took the source material and poured himself into that shape. To me, Jeremy is Holmes.
I couldn't agree more. I had a similar experience. Having seen Basil Rathbone's Holmes originally, I fought the thought that Jeremy's was truer to Canon, but the fight was ridiculously short-lived! They both have that voice, but Basil's was uncomfortably conceited. All the stupid trappings of 1940s Hollywood didn't help either! Jeremy's Holmes transported me back to the original wonder I felt when I read those stories at the age of 13. Long live the King of Holmes! ❤
No finer Sherlock Holmes has ever been played, and indeed, shall ever be played, as has been by Jeremy Brett. All other incarnations, past and future, shall be pale imitations, mere ghosts of the detective of 221b Baker Street. You shall be greatly missed, Mr. Brett. Requiescat in pace.
Jeremy Brett was Amazing and left a legacy that will never be equaled again. He as lady Doyle said To Brett , He was the Holmes of my Childhood!!!!! Brett said after hearing this he had a bottle of Champagne. That says it all. What a Genius of a Actor and What a Incredible human being Jeremy Was. He is so missed. He was Holmes. Jeremy I know your in Heaven with Edward Hardwicke smiling down on us knowing your Holmes lives on forever. Thank you for this Amazing interview.
To me, Brett's interpretation of the great detective builds upon those previous and excells, to the point of where the distinction between actor and character vanishes.
Yes, I saw the play 4 times at Wyndhams Theatre. I still have the advertising poster. There was a small cafe, just across the road. I saw Jeremy dash from the theatre, shortly before a matinee performance, and pop into the cafe. When he returned, I asked him to sign my theatre programme. He was the perfect gentleman and thanked me for taking time out of my day to come and see him. Haha..the pleasure was all mine! Bless him❤️
That torch was passed on definitely however, the torch is pretty much burned out because Jeremy Brett is no longer here and I am watching the series Once Again from my childhood. I was such a huge fan when the show originally came on back in the 80s and 90s. That I couldn't help but Watch it again. And it's amazing. I still remember the day when Jeremy Brett died back in September of 1995. As far as I'm concerned, he will always be Sherlock Holmes.
Without Watson, Holmes could not exist in space and time. Holmes is ill suited for life amongst humans. Watson provides a key to open the door to that which Holmes cannot understand or tolerate. Watson feels privileged to be a part of Holmes' life. They truly love one another like David and Jonathan.
Maybe he was a natural to play Sherlock and nobody knew till he did. Jeremy had to create the funny mannerisms of the Holmes he played, those amazing hand flourishes, the touches that make his Holmes come to life ad such a quirky individual. Robert Downey Jr. played a great Holmes. Love Jeremy. He's under my skin. I adore him.
@anodyne57 when someone is very close to your heart , you will never holler words of love or adoration for that individual in an open public so that whole world can hear. TRUE and real feelings r always private and its expression are always low soft and subtle. But when u holler those same terms out ostentatiously in open public for somebody, it shows clearly that your intention towards that individual is not genuine at all but somewhat fake(y).
@@anodyne57 if king charles and also the U.S president aswell, starts to address every individual as "Darling, " the same u people will be up in arms & start to criticize him from the very next day. !!?????????
@@anodyne57 does your office boss calls u as "darling" when u go for a job or an interview or do you adress all your colleagues as "oh my darling "" in your office?????? Or does the principals of colleges in your country addresses to their students in the same way ? 😂😂😂😂
agreed...i was always amazed by the background set, never mind the masterful performances of the entire cast of the sherlock holmes series! my most favorite series ever!
I can't agree with Jeremy that the torch hasn't really been passed on. Actors have played Holmes. Jeremy Brett was Holmes. There will never be another Holmes. I am very much in your debt. I may be getting an opportunity to write about Holmes. I was nearly going to turn it down. It may kill me but I can't turn away. Thank you.
Always a pleasure to hear his voice. One truly great joy for me was reading June Thomson's Sherlock Holmes stories, which are lifted from the Conan Doyle stories and allude to cases that Holmes and Watson were involved with. I hear Jeremy Brett when I read them and it really brings the stories to life - almost like discovering there were more episodes made by Jeremy Brett that were never broadcast. THE greatest Sherlock Holmes, no question.
What helped Brett become one of the best holmes was not just one of the best Watsons but early on during the first few seasons he had scripts that stayed loyal to the stories.
have just worked my way thru the Granada television series - RU-vid then “recommended” this interview - if I could have a reverse bucket list - seeing this production would be very close to the top - thank you for posting
I think JB being bi sexual gave him the edge in his interpretation of Sherlock! He played him with style and grace which I have found lacks in others who have interpreted Sherlock. His movements were beautiful and eloquent. His way of expressing Sherlock like he did l feel would probably put a smile on Conan Doyle’s face. He was the only Sherlock.
Do Jeremys in Britain all have such a magnetic low voice? Lol. He evokes Irons to me, but I think he is also more articulate than the other Jeremy, which makes it even more charismatic to listen to.
I'm not sure if it's fair to put a one-off performance of Holmes against that of an actor who spent a decade in the role in 42 different films. No offense intended.
What is Britain going to dramatize after Sir Jeremy? Pretty much (NOT ALL) shite. Good actors in terrible stories - mostly. Morse for some odd reason was depressingly good - Sir John Thaw, no doubt. Figger it out y'all. Dudes and Dudettes of Britain, Hollywood salutes you now make a bloody good t.v. show. BBC ain't the only bully in town and the rules have changed for, shall we say, storytellers? Aloha ya Hodads.

Brett and Hardwick - lovvies who laboured and lost. Whenever I watched them, I couldn't go beyond their failure to convince. Every moment was a ghastly acting contrivance and wholly vacuous and transparent rendition.
@@soniavadnjal7553 Please don't post fake comments. thanks. BTW - I still hold the view that both Brett and Hardwick were overacting and failed to convince.
