Jeremy Scahill on the Value of Whataboutism - Intercepted Podcast

You cannot erase the murderous past of George W. Bush and his allies and act like all that matters is opposing Trump.
If we, as a society, were actually honest about how often we do the very things - albeit in our own American way - as those we condemn as despots and tyrants and terrorists, then the whole dialogue would change.

When someone accuses another of 'whataboutism', they are trying to convince you that hypocrisy is acceptable, and that challenging hypocrisy is not.
@hansblitz7770
@hansblitz7770 6 лет назад
Or, they're simply pointing out retarded false- equivalencies. Like when someone bring up Islamic terror and your side of the commie Lefty weirdo political scale diverts "Whatabouts" to "Right wing terror" or plays "Whatabouts" in regards to "Christian Terror" Instead of focusing on the topic that is the ideology directly responsible for the overwhelming majority of deadly terrorism in the world, you and other sniveling Leftists want to focus on the tiny minority of terrorist ideologies. Why is that? Don't answer that, I already know. It's because Islam is seen as Non-White, and therefore good according to your ilk.
@MaoTseFunkadelic
@MaoTseFunkadelic 6 лет назад
Lol, whoa there Obergruppenfuckface, lets take out all your lunatic vitriol and see what remains: -Right wing terror is unimportant -Islamic terror is important -State terror doesnt deserve mentioning So you prove my point. You are a hypocrite, and want to convince others that hypocrisy is unimportant.
@your_belief_vs_everything
@your_belief_vs_everything 6 лет назад
No, Right-wing terror is irrelevant when we are speaking about a specific act of terror that was I and is overwhelmingly committed by a group that uses Islam to kill. It's not misdirection by leftists, it's simply cowardice. Your belligerence says it all, obergruppenfuckface. Please tell me about all the Right-wing terror, without going in the way back machine. Please tell me about all this Christian-terror without bringing up the fucking Crusades or your philosophical debate on "what is Christian terror?". Because that is just a passive way of saying "white Christian-terror". It's the weakest argument and that is why you rely on the false equivalency and obfuscation tactics. That thread is being pulled pretty tight and it's about to snap back and hit you in the face. Reply all you want, I'm not giving you anymore oxygen than I have. But I know how it makes you guys happy to have the last word so here you go...... Jk.

@@your_belief_vs_everything Yeah, as you might imagine, more homegrown terrorism occurs in the US than does foreign national terrorism. Considering its much harder to kill people across the world than it is at home. You watch the news lately? Seen any church or synagogue shootings? How about school shootings? Remember Timothy McVeigh? Seriously, you guys need to reassess your rhetoric. Us 'lefties' don't hate things cause they're white, mate. We ridicule things because they're stupid and patently false. Get with it. You'll be glad you did.

So your big ambition is to have 1,000 exact duplicates? I thought liberals loved diversity. What your describing sounds a lot like totalitarianism. Why am I not surprised? Little tip, democracies work by letting minorities lobby for power in order for ALL people to have a day. That doesn't mean ALL people get their way ALL the time. It's pretty sad that liberals seem to think conservatives are all cross burning Nazis. Being concerned about encroaching Sharia Law should be a concern for everyone. Somehow liberals find it virtuous to give extremists value in our democracy when they give us ZERO value. People like Linda Sarsour lobby for ever increasing government oppression because she wants Sharia Law in sovereign US borders. Do you know what Sharia law Is? Because if you truly did you'd know there is literally no place for it in a sovereign nation that is not Islamist. It also calls for the subjugation of women such as western culture hadn't seen since the 13th century. Women do not enjoy being considered 1/2 the value of a man, or having their clitoris sliced off at prepubescence. That is true Sharia. And I've heard liberals laugh it off as if crazy republicans are just fanatics. Please take a look at communities with large Muslim populations within the US. They already practice Sharia, it IS here. And when will it be serious enough for liberals to care, when women are being whipped in the streets like they are in Africa? Or how about when teenage American girls are being raped by the thousands like they are right now in England? When little girls are bartered off as child brides like they are in Sweden? You know what those countries have in common? They let tens of thousands of Muslim migrants flood into their countries from places where the population cannot read or write in their native language. Where women are forced to wear a Burka or a hijab and must take a male with them to walk down a public road. I wish liberals would open their eyes. This isn't racism. Muslims aren't a race.

"the soviets did use this; but what about when America did?" We need to have simple critical thinking skills to distinguish between "whataboutism" used as deflection and misdirection vs a simple comparison. it's as simple as that; know when you're being lied to or fucked, and know who to trust. We can't start throwing people under the bus for making comparisons; it shuts down ALL discourse.

This is what philosophers fear about. When a notion or an idea has evolved as ideology, that is the time where it becomes anti-critic and its proponents will do anything at all cost in order to preaent their idea as flawless and sacrosanct as possible. This not only happens in the alt right, but also in the left and liberals, especially about identity politics.

"All that matters is opposing Trump. It's all hands on deck." Gee, why does that sound so familiar to me? Seriously, I heard this line of talk when it came to opposing GWB, Mitt Romney, ect. The enemy of your enemy isn't necessarily your friend, or even your ally. To hail GWB or Mitt Romney as part of the so-called resistance just because they made some tepid criticisms of Trump is not only ethically wrong, but also an insult to the intelligence.
@wfjhDUI

Not what I was expecting from the title. It seems like most people do acknowledge just how awful George W. Bush was when they compare him favorably to Trump and they usually comment on just how mind blowing that is. If Trump had been president on 9/11 then we'd likely be carving our memes into stone tablets right now. I was expecting the video to say that sometimes an ostensible 'whataboutism' is actually pointing out an important inconsistency in one's thinking.

I think that you're conflating two different tactics. One is explaining the (often flawed) reasoning behind bad actions, which minimizes the actions by portraying them as necessary to prevent worse things from happeneing. The other is whataboutism, which seeks to justify one's own actions by pointing to the unreleated actions of others as a way of portraying your own actions as normal and acceptable. "Since other people have done it, why can't I?" It's a childish way of thinking. These two tactics are not the same thing. The first presents a cost-benefit analysis as justification for some action. The second just points out other instances of similar actions without much justification beyond the fact that someone somewhere did something similar.

Is it me, or did a lot of journalists like Scahill, Greenwald, even Assange fall from Liberal graces around the time Snowden starting releasing (and they began reporting) military industrial complex shit that was more inconvenient for the status quo (which is what the Democrats serve, as well as the Republicans, as their roles in the politics play) than just the Republicans and Bush? It seems most quality journalists are cranking away in alternative media, and that almost none are left in traditional places like the NYT, MSNBC, etc.

No, I don't think it's you. Although I'm not sure how to categorize Scahill, Greenwald, Assange, Caitlin Johnstone, Jimmy Dore, et al. "True Progressives?" "True Liberals?" I certainly wouldn't to refer to Cenk, Maddow, Hayes, et al as "Liberals".

I'm torn about classifications. I suppose it's important because it makes it easier to know what not to be. At the same time, when there are classifications, then it's fair to ask when not fitting 100%, when does one fall out? I'm more worried about the acceptance of money in politics and the lack of transparency it brings. That's a big problem I have with Cenk: he has been committed to getting rid of Big Money for a long time, but over the last year or 2, his commitment to transparency has been questionable. For example, I don't think Justice Dems' candidate choosing methodology has been revealed. (yes, I know he no longer works for them) I also don't like the way he uses what is one of the biggest media outlooks around to push candidates, while not disclosing that they are his candidates. He doesn't use his channel to practically mandate debate; i.e., if a candidate were running in a primary, Cenk should be lining up debates on the TYT channel and work to sink any qualified candidate's campaign who refused to participate. (Randy Bryce not willing to debate Cathy Myers? He's out. Alison Hartson won't debate David Hildebrand...She's out. Etc.)
@furiousmat1667
@furiousmat1667 6 лет назад
yeah.. I too most often felt that charges of whataboutism or whataboutery were mostly an attempt to stop you from resorting to known, concrete examples of similar behavior. People reflexively brand it a sort of deflection or an attempt to change the topic. The real purpose of referring to these other instances of similar crimes, most of the time though, is actually to highlight a blatant double standard in your opponent's analysis of current issues. Thus if Trump is being portrayed as uniquely dangerous because he does something that his predecessors (especially some that were supported by your opponent) did too, pointing to the times when they did isn't a justification of Trump's actions. It's a call for reasoned and measured discourse: you can be against what is going on, but don't get all hysterical and "the ends justify the means for this one" about it because this really isn't as special as you're making it to be, and you were ok with it when it was happening under Obama. I think it's entirely healthy to point out how Trump in fact does NOT break that much with past american tradition. Although there are some important differences, I do think that most of it is more cosmetic than it is fundamental.

Our worldviews generally depend on a set of assumptions we make. For most people, these assumptions are like axioms of mathematics, and go unchallenged! Unlike mathematics, however, these assumptions are often logically conflicting, yet they live happily inside our heads side by side. Most people fear to question these assumptions, because that could lead to serious existential crisis. Take, for example, the American notions of freedom, equality and justice. In fact, let me be more concrete: consider the refusal of a certain part of the population to put on masks during the current pandemic. People cite personal freedom, yet they seemingly ignore the fact that through their actions they are being disrespectful of others' freedom to live. People do not seem to get the very simple idea behind personal freedom, that you are NOT free to take others' freedom. When you put together the notions of freedom AND equality/justice, that is the only logical outcome. The biggest challenge facing the Left today (not the woke ass neoliberals, I mean the true Left) is to make people aware of such paradoxical way of thinking. American exceptionalism cannot be dismantled otherwise.
