Zane was like Dickerson, 18 inch arms- I saw Dickerson at a seminar many years ago, he didn't care about weight as a number and even Arnold admitted that the better form he used he got a better looking body, strict form is better than just lifting heavy weights like power trainers
I didn´t know that Frank Zane , Arnold and the bodybuilders of the 70s had workouts of only 20 minutes through 45 minutes in the off season. This is tottally new for me. Amazing. There is no sense in training 6 hours a day, is not human possible. I never believed completelly in this.
Yes , it's possible , but not for a big period of time , they trained like this when they were near of the competion. If you train like this for a big period of time, you will destroy your body.
Great video as usual. Next time Sylvester Stallone has a movie out he is promoting, try and get an interview with him and ask him diet, workout & supplement questions. None of the idiot talk show hosts ever ask him anything new or worthwhile.
ric you have the best channel on bodybuilding, the best stories of oldschool bodybuilding, and you interview the best people who knows what they are talking about. love your channel ric.
Thanks for having Jerry Brainum back on. He is, by far, my favorite guest. I'm also a subscriber to his Applied Metabolics newsletter. Ten bucks is nothing when you consider the amount of information he's giving you.
I got the honor to hang out with Jerry about 10 years ago. I got a chance to ask him a lot of questions. And he can really put away a large pizza by himself. Very cool guy.
How old is Ric? He appears to be probably around 88yrs old? Regardless he’s old and he’s quite clearly in phenomenal shape. Neck, arms and chest of a young man. Exercise is a wonderful thing. Truly the fountain of youth :)
RIC, I sure wish you'd have Jerry on again you guys sure look like you get along great- so MUCH amazing knowledge here and he hasn't been on for years now! Life is short, PLEASE have Jerry on again... PLEASE.
This is youtube-where people come for free entertainment. This is like a street musician telling people to move along when they don't want to pay to hear the music. It's the wrong venue if you think people are going to fork over money for videos. People make money by the advertising, not by telling them to put money in the case or keep walking. That's why people were complaining.
Did you listen to the way that we explained it? If you did, then you understand. Most the older guys get it. WE have long history of info. NO one is entitled for free. If they can't afford a buck then so be it. But everyone has a choice. I made mine. Everyone else can make theres. There's no cap on income. Whether it be advertisers or not, that's very little. Would you work for free??? lol
It's a no-win situation in a way. If Rick or myself put dozens of ads in the videos or my newsletter (which has zero ads), you can bet that it wouldn't take long for some people to start complaining about the "excessive ads." I've heard this for the last 30 years about the bodybuilding magazines, about how they are nothing more than "sales catalogs" to sell supplements and other things. But without the ads, there would be no magazines, since they are entirely dependent on having sufficient ads. This is precisely why many magazines and newspapers have gone out of business--because they lost their advertisers to the Internet. Look at TV: if you don't like seeing commercials, you SUBSCRIBE to pay TV. Either way, you're paying in one way or another. Nothing of worth is really free, because those capable of producing quality programming or writing or whatever would never continually produce it for free. Those of you who went to college may recall Psychology 101: behavior that isn't intermittently rewarded will be extinguished. In other words, no money equals no work. Ric charges $1.99 to view a video he put a lot of time and work into. I charge $10 a month for a publication that averages over 35 pages each month, and I also must pay for web hosting, research materials and so on. I'm charging 33 cents a day. I lose more change than that each day. If you buy a newspaper, such as the LA times, you will pay $1.50 for each daily issue (more on Sunday) and will still see dozens of ads, with little or nothing that will help you in any significant way.My Newsletter provides not only science-based research, but also my over 50 years of study and experience, which is literally priceless. Those who read my newsletter will be way ahead of the curve of knowledge regarding nutrition, health, fitness, anti-aging, and other topics. I would suggest that is worth a lot more than 33 cents a day.
Jerry Brainum Hello Mr. Brainum, I would like to ask whether I will have access to the older issues of your e-book if lets I will subscribe to your ebook tomorrow. Thanks
Jerry Brainum I am so happy when I see you in Ric's corner ! Thank you for all your wonderful stories and knowledge ! I see all your videos like a great gift. Respect.
ConquerCollin Get with the times. This isn't the 90's or the '00s. Hulu used to be the same way back in the day- the place where everyone went to watch free TV. Now they are largely a pay service (Hulu+) with some free content, as well. Web pages used to be largely ad-free back in the day- now they are anything but. Companies and individuals are moving to freemium models with free content of value to draw in people, and premium content to monetize. If you still think RU-vid is just a free video service, you're living in the past. Again, get with the times, buddy.
I think it's fair enough to charge for your material, especially since its high quality stuff and ultimately, not really expensive... Some people spend more on a few beers/coffees.
Awesome info Jerry. Are you still with Ironman? I've read Internet posts where it was supposedly you talking about Arnold's off season. I didn't know what to believe. After what you said here it confirms his low key off season. Thank you Rick and Jerry, I love getting the info straight from the horses mouth.
Ric, can you do a video talking about what was real and what wasn't in Pumping Iron. I know Arnold has mentioned that there were some parts that were staged just to give dramatic effect to the movie. Thanks.
You guys are awesome! Love hearing the old stories you have to talk about. Could listen to it for hrs. Keep up the good work ric! Btw where's Arnold hahaha. I'm sure yer burnt out on that question.
You definitely should charge a fee. In this era of entitlement, free information available on the internet devalues the value of quality information. Also, those who complain are the ones who definitely need the knowledge. There is zero appreciation when something is given for free.
Awesome interview Ric! You don't see camaraderie like that in the gym anymore. The only time I've seen it was while playing football and while in the Marine Corps. Everyone helped each other and they cleaned up after themselves too.
Great interview and I think you should charge for your work...that said, just because someone puts information on the Internet for free doesn't make them insane. You ask, what's the motivation? How about altruism? Just helping another human so they don't make the same mistakes you do. Just wanted to say that...love the show Ric
I did that with 880 videos. I have one for 99c, is that asking too much? Damn!! What's wrong with people. No free lunch in life.. eventually everyone pays for something.
As I stated in the video, not everything on the Internet should come with a charge. On the other hand, if a person put work into what they put on the Internet, they should be paid. Not agreeing to this is the same as saying that you should work for free on your job because the boss is such a great guy,and you want to help him. That's a nice statement, but the people who charge you for your bills, food, gas,and so on don't care how nice your boss is, or that you want to be "altruistic."
Jerry Brainum Let me also add that those with real information or knowledge that is acquired through years of study and experience would never continually put stuff for free on the Internet, since there is no motivation for them to do so. Doing that is also making the statement that what they are putting on the web isn't worth anything. In many cases, that is true. The problem is that so much material is free on the Internet that many people have the idea that everything should be free, regardless of its worth. Again, I say to such people, why do you accept payment for your job? That's the same reason why some people have the temerity to actually insist on being paid for their work, too! I've answered hundreds of questions on Facebook and even a few here on RU-vid, and never asked for a penny. But you have to draw the line somewhere or you wind up on the street.
First I want to say I think you made an assumption so let me be very clear again. I have zero problem with you charging for your work. That's not what I commented on...you are 100% correct. You deserve payment for your work if you feel it's due. What I commented on, I don't even have a problem with , you are entitled to your opinion. I was just saying people do things for other reasons that money. Calling them insane for doing that or that their work is of no value is just hogwash. It can be true of course,..but it's not absolute and you're almist stating it as fact. If you give info for free it must be carp or you didn't work hard on it...that's wgat I'm hearing. I put information about light hydrocarbon detection on the Internet for free...why? So that people don't blow themselves up using volatile hydrocarbons. That's all I'm saying...and to be honest you knew it would be taken wrong because I feel as an intelligent man, you knew it was kind of a bs statement. It's just how you felt. Again, I LOVE you guys...no lie. Tics show is awesome and you as a guest is always intriguing. I'll probably buy your newsletter simply because I think you do deserve the money. I am retired at 34...just sold my business so I undestand how it feels to have someone value you're life's work. Good luck I hope there's no hard feeling but just like you said, I gotta say this...well I just had to say that. I'm not driven by money...I already made my money. I just help people to help people because I can.
Bring Mike Katz ,Danny Padilla , The blond girl in the gym from back then,Kent Kuehn, Are any Aussies like John Terilli ,Roger Walker around ?Franco ?AAArnold ?,Big Louie Ferrigno ?
Always great when Ric has Jerry on. I just didn’t like the story on Waller. That’s one thing that always gives bodybuilders a bad name when they have to act like big dumb bullies picking on someone smaller then themselves. That’s one thing that’s cool about my gym , we always show etiquette and courtesy to these skinny guys that come in who are beginners. When you have to pick on someone smaller than you your just showing what an insecure asshole you are.
No ! They are not crazy ! So do you think youTube creators are crazy managing this service for you with no fees ? There are many other ways to monetize your product. You may want to think about them if you really do not want to charge people...
Interesting to note Frank Zane was not a heavy lifter. He lifted well into his 60;s and may still be lifting. Waller, was a heavy lifter and I'm pretty sure Ric said Waller just quit lifting altogether. Maybe there's something to be learned by younger lifters. If you're in it for the longterm, don't always go heavy.
Keith Barbaro While Waller did quit lifting, it wasn't due to injuries. It was due to getting sole custody of his son, being a single father, and making ends meet. See raw-iron.com/forums/index.php?topic=1967.0;wap2
Hallo Keith! i would like to ask you something, if you dont mind? as you said Zane was not a heavy lifter, but how can you make your muscles bigger without getting to your absolute limit? because i have always thought that going to your absolute limit and doing only 8-12 REPS is the key to make your muscles bigger! i would be thankful if you replied!
I think body type.matters. Zane's bodytype responds better to that workout. Brainum has talked about "The Zane Workout" several times. It works for some people.
Things that are free have no value, put knowledge and information on RU-vid for free and anybody can access it. If you have something of value you must charge for it otherwise the person receiving it puts no value on it. If anyone quibbles about the price for your work don't sell it to them at any cost because no matter how much you charge they just won't see any value in your product.
Thank you for your comments. While I wouldn't say that everything that is offered for free has "no value,"I would certainly agree that many things do have a great deal of value in the sense that they can improve your life and health. Anything that offers benefit to people, and required a lot of work to produce, must come with a price tag.Otherwise, the implication is that such information is not worth paying for. So your point definitely has validity!
Hey ric, one thing that I am confused about is the weed smoking. Did you guys smoke weed during contest prep or just in the off season and what did you guys do when you got the munchies? In other words how did you guys still have great physiques and still smoke weed?
They mentioned weed once so don't over think it and start asking questions. It was simply for social they never made it a big deal in their own lives simply just had a bit of pot around to smoke every now and then
Can you increase the volume on your videos? They are so difficult to hear! Jerry is pretty normal volume, you are very quiet, but still, the overall volume is really too quiet for easy listening and it is always so great to hear what you guys have to say!!!!!
Some people charge a few hundreds for a consulation. They listen to your situation and give you the best advice or maybe a few directions. And can be extremely helpful. Of course it cost money. You pay for that knowledge that comes from experience, that maybe you don't have yet. But yes, people want everything free now.
just curious ..about 14:52 into this video. I am looking at the picture of Arnold calf's. something just doesn't look right. There are many stories and one coming from a close friend and workout partner Mike Katz. Mike claims in an interview that Arnold had calf implants, Its a rumor for decades. Arnold claims that when he started to workout with Reg Parks. Parks told him heavy very heavy is the secret? I like to hear from others just a curious rumor that seems to not go away.
For content and depth of information, Jerry Brainum and Doug Brignole rank at the very top of your list of guests. I'll give Jerry's "Newsletter" a try, even though my attention span is on the short side. :-)
Lifting weights can slow you down somewhat. You wont see any Arnold size tennis stars. When I was boxing gold gloves I wasn't allowed to lift weights, and once I started lifting heavy I could see why. Its fine up to a certain point but once you get to about eighteen inch arms your punches slow down significantly. And you do not hit harder from being stronger, that I promise you. It may be counterintuitive but its absolutely true. I can bench more than twice what I could when I boxed and my punching power probably went down.....if it stayed the same its only because I added more weight to my body.
how do get the aticle that jerry Brainum rith at 10.00 month. dont forget i live in Canada . i listen to youre program all time Ric i fine youre conversation very intresrthing i thank in advesce, gilles Belanger Otaea ont Canada.
Being half latino and half italian - I think Padilla was the best man. he had to work hard for it, Columbo was a natural, he was a strong son of a bitch, just look at his hands, bigger then Arnolds hands.
Many hails and thanks to both of you for what you're doing. Truly love the classic storie's Jerry shared, the trivia , humor and for dispelling some myths. Total support for this channel. Close to 5 years now on my end ;)
I like the look of the k ate 60s and 70s and mid 90's .frank Zane is my all time favorite. My all star team starting the oak aka the Tremnator and surge also Ronnie and I can't forget flex wheeler
