I couldn't understand why all of college roommates loved the Dead so much. I wouldn't join them on a couple of late shows because I didn't want to be the only one not doing acid. In hindsight I should have because my first show wasn't until 1981. Missed Ithaca, Buffalo and a few others. I must admit I was a bit of a Jazz snob at this point on my musical experiences. Obviously grew up in the early seventies with lots of great rock, then Dylan but I was lost. Probably due to all the bootleg tapes and the less than ideal stereo sound I was used to. Sorry if anyone has gotten this far, but my first Dead show was almost religious especially my feelings about Jerry. I was blown away. Unfortunately he died way too young 😔 I will say that he's definitely my favorite musician of all time. Love all his solo as well as the JGB and all of his other collaborations. Thanks for posting this solo treasure!!!

I'm a west coast head. Went to alot of shows from '76 til the end. I never heard of this one and I thank whomever it was that put this on the Internet. Great stuff and yeah, the Going Going Gone is a helluva thing. I miss Jerry. 23 years? or some such and I never said that before. Guess its just I miss my old life. Seeing ya'll on shakedown was a great thing. I was never more me than at a show. Got married and raised a family after Jerry passed. Crazy that I chose a woman who never gathered around a fire with a song or a dance. I guess that's too much info and she divorced me anyway. Better than being dead though. What the fuck. Crazy life. Picking up my guitar and putting the rest to song. Would love to say I'll see ya ll on tour .

Jerry Garcia died and went through the black hole in space, where enlightened souls go, came through the other side as God of All things Good, the Dionysus of interplanetary space as it were. When I listen to Jerry, he takes me through the worm hole there to his celestial plane and back again, feeling every emotion along the way. To think, I used to dislike The Dead and didn't see or hear the message. We all grow up, we live and we die...Find Joy. Thanks Jerry!

This show has so many bittersweet memories attached to it. I was listening to it, in my car, on August 9, 1995, before the bad news hit the wire. I was going to 30 or 40 shows every year between 1991 and 1994. I had a collection of over 1000 CASSETTE TAPES and DAT. But THIS show held a special place in my heart. Going going gone... the amazing solo... the way he sings it... it'll make you cry if you're in the mood, haha! The Early show has the BEST Valerie I've ever heard.

Ah Jerry. This music is truly the soundtrack to my life since I get turned on when I was 17. Lucky enough to have had five solid years of 15-20 shows / year until the tragedy in '95. The music means even more now than it did then. Love you always Jerry, thanks for opening portals of my life and consciousness, and facilitating some of the most meaningful relationships of my life. This continues to prove why I regard Jerry as the greatest guitarist ever. Certainly my favorite. I have been playing guitar for over 30 years, and I put Jerry over SRV, Hendrix, Clapton... all of them. His acoustic work was equal to or better his electric work. He also, on electric, had the absolute best sense of melody to contribute with his fills.

I wouldn't say he's technically the greatest by any sense, especially when considering the REALLY great guitar players like Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Tony Rice, etc but Jerry certainly had soul and played with an emotion that very few have ever rivaled. What he lacked in virtuosity he certainly made up for it by being a stellar melodic player that knew how to perfectly emote with his instrument in a way that accompanied his voice so well. He's the perfect example of how it's not the passage/phrase being played, but how one plays it that matters. One will never hear a Jerry lick and think it is anyone else, that's for sure. For that, he's my favorite guitarist.

The only acoustic only solo Garcia shows, I believe. The story I heard is they were called the IRS shows because they figured out all the sudden that nobody had been keeping proper records and he had not paid any income tax and he owed a shit ton of money so he went out and play these shows to make it up real quick like. I absolutely love when he plays acoustic. I love how he'll just bust into Solo⁸s when there's no other instruments in the background playing accompaniment or maybe it's just a bass. I love that. I do that because of him

I was talking to my baby brother today about Jerry and the dead. We're 12 years apart. He reminded me that I had introduced him and his group of friends to this unbelievable music. And that most of them are now just as enchanted with it as he and I are. It really never occurred to me that he had taken the music that I shared with him and shared it with his friends. But I feel so fantastic for exposing the younger generation to this remarkable music. I don't even know the kids that my brother exposed to Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, but I'm glad he did. Its good to know that I am not alone. I truly believe that Jerry Garcia was and still is the most and best-loved person of our time. He profoundly touched the hearts and souls of just about everyone that was lucky enough to see him play. He was a channeler of spirit and emotion and a true gift to humanity. No one else touched people as deeply as him except maybe Jesus but I never saw him live.

His voice is really fine here and it's interesting to be able to hear exactly what he's playing on guitar. But I can hear just how much he hated having to supply all the accompaniment himself and not having other musicians to interact with. Rhythm guitar in a band and solo guitar are two very different things.

Rock Scully wrote that Jerry indeed was horrified to be standing alone in front of thousands of people. One thing that a lot of folks don't know about Jerry is that he suffered horrible stage fright (right up until 1995). That combined with tons of blow (yes he was snorting off his amp stack lol) made Jerry come up with the idea of adding his favorite musical cohort and drug buddie, John Kahn.
@Jeff-S

That's true, it's written in many books by the band crew and members that he and Bob Weir both had stage fright. They never got used to it although Bob says that once he plays a tune or two he feels OK.

First time I saw the Dead was just outside of Novato California. I was 8 years old and on my way with my family to see "Cool Hand Luke" at the local Drive-in. They were hitchhiking on the other side of highway 101. We stopped by a local Alpha-Beta market and there they were eating doughnuts out of the box in the store. The youngest guy who I later realized was Bob Weir, saw I liked the doughnuts and offered me one. Well Years later I realized that the guy who offered me doughnuts was Bobby and the other guys n various stages of long hair were the Dead. So awesome. And yep... Here it is 54 years later and I still Love them and all my fellow Deadheads and the Whole World (mostly) very. Take it easy Sister's and Brother's. Love You all. Each and Every One of You!!
