its "not finished" in the sense its a rough cut it really is essently finished and even reditable. It will be released, the libary of congress said they will show it to the public.
It can't be released without the consent of the 'Lewis' estate. The Library of Congress also said it has no intention of ever releasing the film on any media form. So no, the movie will never be released, dumb shit.
I still think that the idea for the movie is very strong it just needed to be handled dead serious, with very little comedy. More Twilight zone, less Jerry Lewis
I agree with this. It could have been a great story if presented as an ironic tragedy handled by more capable writers. I don't quite get what they were thinking making this a dark comedy. Even now it's in really poor taste, but back in the early 70s, this would have been one of the first ever depictions of the camps on the big screen, in a time where this had only just ended 25 odd years prior. I especially get weirded out by the theory Lewis was making this to show at his family-oriented theater chain. Just bizarre to me. It really did have the potential to be great, but it seems like they made every wrong decision along the way.
@@maddiemaccheese8170 If you actually read the script, its not a dark comedy. And the scenes of the film that we have also demonstrate that. This was Jerry Lewis trying to go for an Oscar.
Well the comedy was to make the Children feel happy in there impending doom which they in their innocence had no idea. This could of been a hearbreaker of a film. I don't get the poot taste. This atrocities happened. And a movie like this would show why it should never happen again.
The premise is good. But knowing the ending would take away the crux of the film viewing. And maybe the untainted screenplay is better. Lewis certainly had the chops to pull this off. It should not be taboo to show the horror of nazi Germany. This would have been one way to do it.
He admitted years later that he was addicted to Percodan at the time of this production (he suffered horrible back pain due to many years of taking comedic pratfalls).
+Aidan de Ruyter Yes, Harry Shearer liberated a rough copy and has seen it, this is all that's been leaked/out there. Recently JL commented on it and said it will never see the light of day in it's full form.
there are copies of a rough cut of the film. jerry lewis owned one which he donated to the library of congress under the condition that it won't be released before some date in 2024.
