THE ARTFUL CODGER I think quarry was probably not meant to be a fighter as I sense maybe he was too kind and thoughtful for the profession? It broke my heart to see him in that state. He was a champion if there ever was one. I liked your comment very much. God bless both jerry and you sir.

Good call Earl: The time you won your town the race We chaired you through the market-place; Man and boy stood cheering by, And home we brought you shoulder-high. Today, the road all runners come, Shoulder-high we bring you home, And set you at your threshold down, Townsman of a stiller town. Smart lad, to slip betimes away From fields where glory does not stay, And early though the laurel grows It withers quicker than the rose. Eyes the shady night has shut Cannot see the record cut, And silence sounds no worse than cheers After earth has stopped the ears. Now you will not swell the rout Of lads that wore their honours out, Runners whom renown outran And the name died before the man. So set, before its echoes fade, The fleet foot on the sill of shade, And hold to the low lintel up The still-defended challenge-cup. And round that early-laurelled head Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead, And find unwithered on its curls The garland briefer than a girl’s.

@@dimcadallapeorgantone993a4 I'm not particularly interested in denigrating Quarry, as he seems to have been a decent guy, and an decent boxer- but the O.P.'s claim that Quarry "fought them all" was hyperbolic. I'll also point out that Foreman (76-5 & 68 KO's), Liston (50-4 & 39 KO's), Cleveland (80-13-1 & 60 KO's), & even Wepner (35-14-2 & 17 KO's) each won a lot more than they lost, and Quarry was prone to cutting/bleeding himself. Additionally, Quarry's contemporaries and the pundits seemed to agree that he possessed much more ability than he actually used - indicating laziness/lack of heart. Considering the brain damage he suffered preceding his demise, it's probably just as well that he didn't face Foreman, Liston, Cleveland or even Wepner, or his 53 years might've been reduced further.

Jerry Quarry was a great fighter. He had one of the hardest skulls and toughest chins of all time. The guy could stand toe to toe with any fighter and his left hook was one of the best. His downfall was that he had the shortest reach of any heavyweight of his era, which exposed him to brutal punishment. Rest In Peace, Jerry Quarry.

John Barker Jerry was one of my favorite fighters when I was growing up. I never got over him losing to Jimmy Ellis for Ali's vacated title in the late '60's. Why he didn't show up that night, who knows? Quarry did that his whole career; he over achieved some nights and under achieved on others. That said he wasn't ever a great fighter but nobody had more heart, more guts and nobody can ever say they didn't get their money's worth watching Jerry. That night vs Shavers, who saw that coming?. Jerry Quarry, my man!!!

@kevindlinc I believe he would've beaten Foreman, if big George would've given Jerry the shot he earned, after beating Lyle and Shavers. He had the right combination of counter punching, hand speed, and toughness to defeat the slow, wild swinging, and gassed after five rounds, Foreman. Foreman opted instead, to fight the very unworthy, Joe 'King' Roman. What nonsense. It would've been Quarry's only opportunity to be champion. Jerry was a gutsy fighter and a very graceful man.

As an amateur fighter I was on the same card with Jerry Quarry in 1965 at the Olympic auditorium. He beat Clay Hodges for heavyweight champion and beat Bobby Sedio for lightweight champion under the name of Fred Grissette. We both trained at the teamsters gym

Great video. It just shows that boxing, like a lot of sports, is a give and take. And, quite often, it takes more than it gives. I am a huge boxing fan and I really feel for Quarry, a guy who gave his all for the sport and his family. I can't even imagine having to go through something like that. He and many fighters, champions or not, have my utmost respect.

Ever met anyone name Chris, Kevin, Jim, Jeffery or mike Quary. My dad's from Bakersfield, California as we'll but we spell our last name with one r instead of two. I asked him about this after I found out about Jerry Quarry, and he said we might be related because some Quarys spell their name with 2 r's and some spell it with one like us.

There's just something about Jerry's old school integrity and grit that really gets me. The words Ali shared w/ him at the end of the fight - pretty sure Ali said the same. Jerry's words at the end of this video were haunting and probably accurate. Man, my heart goes out to you.

Definitely came up at the wrong time. Quarry would've been a champion in any other era but just couldn't get past Frazier or Ali. Makes you wonder what a Quarry vs. Tyson, Quarry vs. Holyfield, Quarry vs. Marciano would have looked like. R.I.P. Jerry.
@michaelbelfer1069
@michaelbelfer1069 6 лет назад
ddland45 Tyson, interesting that one. Well what about Tyson vs Frazier? Back when Quarry went toe to toe with Joe Frazier they said it was the same styles with one bigger and better so J Q had no chance. I believe Joe whips Tyson and Quarry KO's Tyson inside the 7TH.
@josephshields2922
@josephshields2922 3 года назад
He couldn't get past Norton, Chuvalo, Ellis, Machen or Alongi either and that was his problem and that was the real problem, he just couldn't win the big important fights.

@@michaelbelfer1069 Tyson vs. Frazier? Yeah, that would be a tough battle of styles inside a phone booth. I think I'll have to disagree with you, though, and say Tyson would stop Frazier inside three round for the simple reason that Tyson was faster that Frazier and had more weapons. Frazier was basically a one handed fighter with a devastating left hook, but a very mediocre right hand that he usually used more as a distraction. Tyson had power in both hands and would punch in combinations that would eventually find Frazier's jaw early, a problem Frazier had as a slow starter in may of his fights. Tyson would figure out Frazier's bobbing defense and land powerful counters while slipping Frazier's lefts. A stunned Frazier would be an easy target for Tyson's vicious and powerful combinations.

My last name is quary(with one r instead of 2). My track coach asked me if I was related to Jerry Quarry. I didn't know who it was so he explained to me that he was a famous boxer from Ali's time. I was curious so I looked him up when I got home and found out he came from the exact same county in California that my dad's family comes from and even the same town, button willow. I asked my dad and he said he didn't know but he said that Jerry looked like one of his cousins. My dad said some Quarry's spell their name with two r's and some spell it with one so maybe I'm related to him.
