It's never fair for how some players are compared, regardless of accomplishments. Take the 2000 NFL Draft. There were some amazing 1st Round talents in that draft: Jamal Lewis, Shaun Alexander, Corey Simon, Brian Urlacher just to name a few. But they all get compared to a 6th Round Pick; Tom Brady.
man as a kid watching college football on saturday mornings as kid when Rice was in college was crazy because he was never on tv they showed no highlights all they did was report Jerry Rice had 400 yards and 5 td's he was like a mythological creature
I used to watch him on BET on SAT nights when they had their sports highlights. And i got a chance to see him n his senior yr at MV St. on the BET game of the week.
@@elwin38 With all due respect Rice played against some D2 schools like Kentucky St and when it came to the postseason he was shut down by better competition case and point they met Louisiana Tech and was destroyed 66-14.I wished that MVSU had played against the cream of the crop in 1-AA.
They did the same thing with Steve McNair at Alcorn St. years later. When The Oilers drafted him, I thought that the Oilers were insane. I guess both picks panned out.
My entire childhood entertainment was based on action figures and trading cards lol, these kids today basically get all those old expensive toys in our day for free now.
Toon, Brown, and Rice all in one draft class. I think Andre Reed was 1985 as well though he was much later in the round selection. That's a pretty good selection of WR.
Jerry had great talent and an even greater work ethic. Joe and Steve were pitching him the passes but Jerry ran flawless routes and practically invented YAC. Oh by the way, do people remember Joe Montana was a third round pick? That Walsh guy really was kind of a genius!
@@pdumpsterful Yes but he had a 101 degree temperature at the time and Walsh threw in the towel on trying to draft Simms.Simms was stuck in offensive purgatory with Parcells just like McMahon was in Chicago with Ditka both of them threw a ball ONCE A MONTH.McMahon came from BYU where they threw a ball on every down.Simms had a strong arm coming from Morehead St.
@@pdumpsterful I saw the ESPN DOCUMENTARY 30 FOR 30 ON THE '83 DRAFT and Walsh was seriously thinking about trying to draft JOHN ELWAY and trade JOE MONTANA but turned down the idea due to his loyalty to Montana.
Neither of the two guys selected ahead of Jerry were all that bad. Both their career's cut short by injuries. Obviously they were no Jerry Rice though.
@@Letterman0412 Al Toon was pretty damn special talent wise. Eddie Brown was pretty damn good too. It's not by chance that both the Jets and Bengals offenses fell way off when they were lost to injuries.
@@Letterman0412 Al Toon had an amazingly productive career, especially considering his QB situation. I feel for guys like him and Tim Brown, stuck with no QB but still leading the league in receptions.
What they fail to mention in this video is that there was another team that was interested in trying to get Rice, the Dallas Cowboys at #17. But the trade by Walsh and the Niners ended up killing the Cowboys hopes of getting Rice. Eventually, the Cowboys descended into mediocrity and years later Tom Landry was fired when the team was purchased by Jerry Jones.
Skip is that you ... this story has nothing to do with the cowboys skip .... leave it to skip to make it about them boys... sorry i instantly thought about how skip always makes it about the cowboys
@@georgemorgan6088 Dude, I'm not even a Cowboys fan. I'm a Saints fan. I just thought it was relevant to bring up that little known fact about how the Cowboys were the only other team that was really interested in Jerry Rice that year.
@@MrJLov13 no i didn't mean it lije you were .. skip Bayless seems to always find a way to bring up the cowboys like when the lion's signed cj Anderson they talked about what it ment to the rams losing him then some how the next 3 minutes on Dallas then back to la ....... it just made me laugh plus Jerry was sought after by more teams than just the boys
Looking over it, this could've been the greatest WR draft class considering all 3 guys played very well in the NFL. Its unfortunate Al Toon had to retire young from concussions(hope his minds in a good place today) and Eddie Brown regressed because of injuries.
Eddie Brown had one 1000 yard season Al Toon had two 1000 yard seasons and three Pro Bowls Jerry Rice had 11 straight 1000 yard seasons, 14 overall, and 13 Pro Bowls
@floatpool pool And Elvis Grbac and Jeff Garcia and Jim Drukenmiller and still balled out . He put 1100 and 1200 yard seasons at 39 and 40 years old . Rice just simply put in the work .
@floatpool pool Jerry Rice had a way of making people setup a bit , even if they were subpar. He at least made Grbac just a "little" bit better to make a slight improvement. That's just what I saw for the most part.
I love these stories man. U see how the draft was back then? The table that the commentators are sitting at looks like a sign-in table at an elementary school fund-run. The draft was a big deal for them. They knew the fans would love it too, they just needed the exposure.
96 draft was one of the best for WR. So many can't miss prospect in that draft. Keyshawn Johnson, Terrell Owens, Eric Moulds, Marvin Harrison, Muhshin Muhammad, Joe Horn. Such a blasphemy that TO went in the 3rd. Should of been number 1 over Keyshawn.
@@alexmiller6214 Sorry man forgot about him and for those Patriots bandwagon (real Pats fans know). He was the guy who caught Tom Brady first TD pass. Brady to Glenn would've been something good.
@@alexmiller6214 Yes until Boldin broke it. RIP TG. People forgot Brady could've of almost play with Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne vs Deion Branch/Givens and a bunch of journeymen receivers in his early years but Pats pass up on both of them. Harrison going 16 to Indianapolis and Pats trading their 30th pick in 01 to Indy and moving up to get Richard Seymour. That trade work out for both the Colts and Patriots.
Eddie Brown was a nice player for the bengals. I still remember the combination of Brooks (RB), Brown (WR) and Holman (TE) combination. With that awesome O-line and Esiason at QB, it was a great team to watch. But no one could take on those 49ers, as they were stacked with HOF caliber players.
If Eddie Brown went to 49ers it would not haven the same player as Rice. But if Rice went to the Jets or Cinny he also would not had the same career he had with the 49ers.
Sam Wyche at the end saying "And they're the genius because they wouldn't give me a 3rd round pick" well laughing/tearing up hit me right in the FEELZONE.
Tom Brady might be the most legendary player of all time, but the greatest football player to ever play the game will always be Jerry Rice. You look at the records and he has them all. Complete dominance for over a decade and a half
I disagree. Both are very similiar players legacy wise. Both not the best athletes or the most flashy highlight reel players. Both are postseason experts and consistently played great while playing forever. And both had their criticisms of cheating and being system players. But let’s not forget, San Fran’s dynasty started before rice got there. Tom Brady to me has made such an impact on the nfl since he began I’d say If football was more of a global sport it’d be on the same level of jordon. For two whole decades, there has been one team that has defined the nfl. Two whole decades. The entire 21st century so far. Not just that, but they really are the greatest dynasty ever that’s not disputable to me. I feel Brady is a much bigger part of that than rice.
I always wondered about what happened that year with the draft. I remember for the longest time wanting to know why the Raiders picked Jesse Hester in the first round that year instead of Rice.
As a Bengals fan this is painful. Good lord we were this close to getting Jerry Rice. Think both of those super bowl losses came down to a last minute touchdown to make it even worse
Marcus Aurelius That’s right it was Wesley Walker. Rice ran a slow 40 yard dash but his first ten yards were incredible and in the West Coast Offense it worked for the 49ers. And I would compare Rice’s work ethic with Jordan.
Barring a freak injury I believe Toon or Brown wouldve also done very well in SF because of the system. The SF system was a freaking machine. Hell Wyches Bengals won the AFC in '88 with a similar, but much less established system.
What everyone is forgetting is that HOFer Andre Reed went to the Bills in the 4th round that year. So much for Walsh not wanting to stay at 28. Walsh in 1979 also wanted Phil Simms in round 1 and "settled" for Joe Montana in round 3. Sometimes, not getting what you ultimately think you want, works out for the best.
Al Toon was a decent receiver for the Jets but I don’t remember Eddie Brown and now I know why. Gotta feel bad for Brown and his injuries that cut his career short. In the end I’m Glad the 49ers were able to pick the kid from Mississippi Valley State who became the Greatest wide receiver of all time. It helps he had some Hal or fame quarterbacks in Young and Montana. Garcia was a viable quarterback as well and was probably thankful to have number 80 on the team.
Toon was pretty good for the Jets. I still wonder though if Toon would have the same career as Jerry because of the system. Maybe not. Jerry never took any days off. Kept working even the day after Super Bowl wins.
Jerry Rice was greatest. There where some WR who could have had great careers too if there were on a fantastic team like 49ers. 1) Joey Galloway 2) Terry Glen 3) Carl Pickens 4) Al Toon 5) Herman Moore Honorable mention: Sam Graddy was a beast on technobowl!
There's a whole bunch of guys who didnt have much help at QB for most of their career and who could have put up great career numbers. Andre Johnson immediately comes to mind... best he had at QB was Matt Schaub.
You know, there's always a mystery in regards to the NFL Draft vs the NBA Draft. In the NFL, late picks have just as much chance to shine as first rounders, and more often than not, do, but in the NBA, for some reason, if you're not a first rounder, you're more likely to see yourself get cut. Makes you wonder.
Dallas wanted to draft Jerry Rice and didn't realize that SF also had rated him very high. SF traded up to steal him from the Cowboys. Another nail in the Cowboys coffin.
@Harry Engel did u just say jerry Rice a top 20 all time receiver? lmaooooooo. pretty sure he's number 1 and thats it.. please tell 19 WR better then him?
You can say that about any of the GOATs, right place right time. But the fact is to be the GOAT you have to put up the numbers, accumulate those wins, and perform big in big games. Rice did it, should've, could've, would've, doesnt change his numbers and legacy and that's all you have to go off of in the end is the facts. If you start speculating and trying to guess what could've happened than there is an argument for just about any player to have been the GOAT in the right circumstance. What matters are the concrete facts and Jerry has a literal ton of them.
Funny that at one point the 4 slowest receivers .... at least stop watch wise ...were the 4 best. Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin, Cris Carter, Herman Moore. A buch of 4.7 guys dominating the league.
Hall of famers who enrolled at HBCU Aeneas Williams Defensive Back-Southern (5th round pick by the Phoenix Cardinals-1991) Jackie Slater-Offensive Tackle Jackson State (3rd round pick by the LA Rams 🐏-1976) Jerry Rice Reciever Mississippi Valley State (1st round pick 16th overall by the 49ers-1985; SB23 MVP;3x Champion) Walter Payton RB Jackson State (1st round pick by the Bears 🐻-1975; 1977 MVP; SBXX champion)
Jerry Rice was anything but a draft bust: HE WAS THE GREATEST WIDE RECEIVER OF ALL TIME, HANDS DOWN, 3X SUPER BOWL CHAMP, 8 TDS in four Super Bowls, 48 total points score, he has my vote as the GREATEST WIDE RECEIVER OF ALL TIME!!!
Damn nothing about how the cowboys were so close to drafting Rice had the niners not swooped in and stolen him away like a thief in the night. Can you imagine #80 and 88 together
