Jerusalem lyrics: And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God On England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the Countenance Divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among these dark satanic mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand Till we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land

The Proms are still held every year, this is just a recording from 2012. However, in 2020 the was no audience due to Covid restrictions and the Last Night concert was cancelled in 2022 as a mark of respect following the death of Her Majesty the Queen. However, all things being equal, it should be held this year as usual

Hello thanks for this reaction. I am sorry you are poorly. Keep warm and Get well soon. No, there's no real news worth gathering about a series of concerts that started in 1895. You may be right about some of the flags being waved are by families made up of people from different countries. The Proms are broadcast throughout the World by the BBC World service (radio) and are also broadcast on tv in places like Japan, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Israel etc. in addition to being broadcast throughout the UK on both radio and tv here. Artists, Conductors, Orchestras come from all over the World to perform throughout the eight weeks of the Proms. So many of the flags belong to people, from across the globe, who come to London, just to be THERE on the last night, after listening/watching at home in far away lands. I, personally, am very happy to tell you that the Proms have NOT finished. It is such a UK tradition now I think their would be riots in the streets should the BBC announce the end of the Promenade Concerts. Now that really would be news for your American channels. What say you?😀

The Promenade concerts were started over 100 years ago by Sir Henry Wood. The season lasts for 8 weeks and includes lots of classical music as well as new compositions commissioned by the BBC, The last night is traditionally the end of season party. The main venue is the Royal Albert Hall in South West London but on the last night there are open air venues in Hyde Park as well as in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, each with a viseo link to the Royal Albert Hall. I had the enormous privilege of attending the last night when Prince Harry was born.

Hi. God save the Queen/King is the UK’s national anthem. Each of the 4 constituent has their own national anthem. I live in Wales and our anthem is Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, you probably can’t understand it or say it. In English it’s Land Of My fathers. At international events then we will sing Mae Hen Wiad Fy Nhadau. A capacity crowd at a Rugby match is full of feeling and pride. Jerusalem has been suggested to be England’s national anthem at British events with God Save Tne Queen/King remaining for the UK.

@@jameswiglesworth5004 Yes the UK’s national anthem is God Save The King. However, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are their own nations. United in United Kingdom means an “association” of nations. We in Wales have our own national anthem and it’s in Welsh. Similar reasons apply to both Scotland & Northern Ireland. At UK events then we will sing God Save The King but if it’s our nation’s (Wales) event we proudly sing Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau. No disrespect to the King and please no disrespect to Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland please.

Sir Hubert Parry, Director of the Royal College of Music, was left-leaning and a pacifist, so when he was approached in March 1916 by the Poet Laureate (Robert Bridges) and Henry Walford Davies to set these lovely verses for a right-wing fundraising concert (to pay for anti-German propaganda, and to lobby the government not to seek peace) he refused. But he kept the William Blake verses and several days later gave the setting to Bridges with the words, "Here's a tune - do what you like with it". The concert was a success and the song caught on, but Parry became increasingly disillusioned with the Fight For Right movement and began to talk about withdrawing the song altogether (he had kept control of the copyright). So Millicent Garrett Fawcett of the Women's Movement (the Suffragettes) asked Parry if the song might become the Women Voters hymn. Parry was delighted and assigned the copyright to the Suffragette movement. Parry replied: "Thank you for what you say about the 'Jerusalem' song. I wish indeed it might become the Women Voters' hymn, as you suggest. People seem to enjoy singing it. And having the vote ought to diffuse a good deal of joy, too. So they would combine happily." Parry orchestrated it for a huge suffrage rally in London on 13 March 1918, but we rarely hear his orchestration because it is eclipsed by Elgar's for huge forces, made with permission for the Leeds Festival in 1922.

Many people come from anywhere in the world for this event it’s a bit snooty and doesn’t reflect the mainstream view of most English people but we do getcaught up on special occasions like the Olympics and when the national rugby or football teams are playing or sadly when a monarch dies.but it’s nice to have a good old singalong. I sometimes go to church to do it but I’m an atheist.

Get well very soon "Ruky". 🙂 The Proms are alive and well by the way, every year! Here are the words/poem to Jerusalem, which are prompted by the story that Christ did indeed pay the 'mountains green' of England a visit - and that too just a few years before his crucifixion. Lewis' conclusion that Jesus sailed to England on a trading ship is based on stories from local legends, architectural evidence from two ancient churches and letters from earliest historians. Jerusalem. Blake's poem (Blake born 1757) Oh, just spotted Ted Roper has already posted Jerusalem so have deleted it and here instead are the words of our National Anthem. The first published version that resembles the present tune appeared in 1744 in Thesaurus Musicus. The melody was also used for the national anthem "Heil dir im Siegerkranz" of the German Empire from 1871 to 1918 and as "The Prayer of Russians", the Imperial anthem of Russia from 1816 to 1833. In Switzerland, it is known as "Rufst du, mein Vaterland". God Save the Queen. God save our gracious Queen, Long live our noble Queen, God save the Queen! Send her victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us; God save the Queen! * * * O Lord our God arise, Scatter her enemies And make them fall; Confound their politics, Frustrate their knavish tricks, On Thee our hopes we fix, God save us all! * * * Thy choicest gifts in store On her be pleased to pour; Long may she reign; May she defend our laws, And ever give us cause To sing with heart and voice, God save the Queen! * * * Not in this land alone, But be God’s mercies known, From shore to shore! Lord make the nations see, That men should brothers be, And form one family, The wide world over. * * * From every latent foe, From the assassins blow, God save the Queen! O’er her thine arm extend, For Britain’s sake defend, Our mother, prince, and friend, God save the Queen!

The Promenade Concerts are on every year they are on for around 8 weeks culminating with the Last Night of the Proms, which to be honest is a celebration of all things UK and ending with the National Anthem God Save The (now) King. It changed at the hour of the (sadly) Queens death and the King automatically took the Throne there was no need for any ceremony at that point he took over straight away. Any ceremonies would come later as was the case, he will be officially crowned king in May this year 2023. The Proms will start this July and ending in September. The idea behind the Promenade Concerts was to bring music to all the people of the UK and as I said ending with THE LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS from the Royal Albert hall in London with broadcast sites in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Yes it's still going on. This year, 9th Sept and currently at time of writing there are only 64 tickets left at the Albert Hall 😂 cheapest is £475!! (And some seats you need to be a regular just to qualify, by having 5 prev proms ticket stubbs, it's to keep the riff raff out I guess 😂). There are Proms in the park events in all 4 nations of the uk and all are available televised live, it's on BBC so you'll be able to view it live from pretty much any country in the world should you wish 👍

@@majpanik The year I did win in the ballot about 5 years ago, the tickets for a seat in a 2nd tier box were £100, about twice the price of a normal concert in the season. I think anyone who buys a season ticket for all of the concerts in the entire Proms season is guaranteed a ticket for the last night. I imagine it is much easier and cheaper to get tickets for the open air "Proms in the Park" satellite events with amplified sound and big screens. As well as places like Cardiff, Glasgow and Belfast, there is always one in Hyde Park, a stone's throw from the Royal Albert Hall. It gets its own live concert with a different orchestra, performers and works (usually lighter classics) on the stage in the Park. Then, for the second half, there is a live link-up to the RAH with big screens etc. I went to the very first in the 1990s with free tickets won in a competition on BBC Radio 4.

in 2021 the WOKE BBC tried to cancel the second half of the last night of the Proms. They were SCREAMED down! In 2022 the late Queen died a few days before the last night of the Proms. The WOKE BBC cancelled the event. Rather, than convert it EASILY into a tribute! Let us see what happens this year! BBC you have been warned. As to the National Anthem can I give you these words: God save our gracious King, Long live our noble King, God save the King: Send him victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us: God save the King. O Lord, our God, arise, Scatter his enemies, And make them fall. Confound their politics, Frustrate their knavish tricks, On thee our hopes we fix: God save us all Thy choicest gifts in store, On him be pleased to pour; Long may he reign: May he defend our laws, And ever give us cause with heart and voice to sing, God Save the King. Look at those words! The second verse asks God for protection from invaders and the third verse asks the King to be a good Monarch.
