Two-time National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward, who has been hailed as the heir to William Faulkner and one of TIME magazine’s Most Influential People of 2018, delivered the keynote address for Tulane University’s Commencement at 9 a.m., May 19 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

The Dome was silent. It was a gracious and loving offering to all of us there. I listen to this from time to time, grateful that she cared that much for the students, respecting her dedication and hard work to make her path. She is a brilliant writer, and very kind. She touches my heart everytime I hear it again.

I so love this commencement speech. She is talking right to those students and sharing something very important. I have offered this to many young people to listen to her. It was dead silent in the Dome. Everyone listened to her. Such a personal gift. Than you, Jesmyn Ward.
