Jesse Woods Johnson was born June 1, 1960 in Rock Island, Illinois. He moved to St. Louis at the age of nine and was raised by foster parents after his parents split up. At age 16 he moved back to Rock Island to live with his father Jackwood Johnson. Johnson began playing guitar when he was 15, honing his chops in local rock bands such as Treacherous Funk, Pilot, and Dealer, throughout his teens and early twenties. On a friend's recommendation, he moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1981, where he met Morris Day and played briefly in Day's band which was called Enterprise. He then became the lead guitarist for the city's funk rock group, The Time.
Although Prince basically recorded the first two Time albums on his own with Morris Day, Johnson did contribute to the Vanity 6 project with a song called "Bite The Beat" co-written with Prince. On The Time's third album, Ice Cream Castle, Johnson contributed to the smash singles "The Bird" and "Jungle Love" (the group's most memorable single), which were helped by the popularity of the Purple Rain film.
However, at the height of The Time's popularity following Purple Rain, Johnson left the band and with the help of Manager Owen Husney signed a solo deal with A&M Records in 1984 and released Jesse Johnson's Revue the following year. This album featured two other former members of The Time in Johnson's backing band, keyboardist Mark Cardenas and bassist Jerry Hubbard. Three songs were released from the album: "Be Your Man", "Can You Help Me" and "I Want My Girl", the much-slept-on slow song about a fateful relationship.

I found this artist again, by chance, through a totally unexpected collaboration with one of the most original french band from the 80s, called Les Rita Mitsouko. That was unexpected, and their collaboration is ...wow. He never had a wide fame in France, at least in the mainstream media, and I guess that his name is forgotten by the majority. Some people may have a reminiscence if you add " the guitarist from the 80's with the pink guitar and catchy songs." And indeed this one is so infectious that my feet can't stop moving. But I was 8 years old in 1985, way too young at this moment to have any opinion on this matter, but adult me... " ho my, I never realised that he was also such a fine man beside being a great guitarist!". It may sound silly, but I really like his... teeth. Seriously, having the same kind of tooth gap myself, I always tend to have a thing for people who have this particularity, despite being usually considered as a flaw. It gives him an unusual charm. Yep, really fine. Special pink 🩷 I had totally missed his two last, more rock, albums that went under the radars here, and they're damn good, too. So it's nice to re discover an artist and see that he deserves to be listened to more carefully past the " catchy songs from the 80's." Thanks, Internet, for this 👍
