He could definitely steal me! WHEW!!! Prince’s so dang s e x y - or sex on legs - as it’s sometimes called. Confidence in a man is a veryyy attractive trait and made me decide to date a guy - or not on more than one occasion.
The FULL PACKAGE 😅 He had the baddest girls, played numerous instruments, could dance, sing, wrote/ produce songs (for himself and others) iconic film w/ great soundtrack! How much better can it get???
Why do I still have the feeling that audience wasn’t ready and still not ready enough for that moment! He was truly the most amazing and talented person in the world! Him and Michael took this world by storm!!! ❤💜
This was in the late 70s not the 80s. I think this is either early 77 or late 77. Because Prince came out that year. This song was his very first single.
@@BigdogGaming-sm3lj His first single was Soft and Wet. That was late 70's. I Wanna be Your Lover is from his second album. Maybe very end of 70's of very start of 80's. It can easily be looked up. I'm just too lazy right now.
@@ayejay8862 I did the foot work. I Wanna Be Your Lover was released August 24th 1979. But he did continue to come out on stage like that in the 80s for quite some time.
@@GiacomoJimmi Mozart had more talent in one single pinky than the guy in the purple silly outfit, but you wouldn't understand that. It's ok it's way above your understanding what a true genius is.
I remember watching this. I was mesmerized by his talent. My mom walked by the TV and had an absolute fit over what he was wearing. 😂 I thought he looked cool.
@@KingCobra3849 lol thats cold! But funny, too! as I stated- I took some slack as a kid for digging Prince. Now we know he was a serious player to the ladies!
The series was canceled by NBC at the request of Dick Ebersol as part of a deal for him to take over the then-ailing Saturday Night Live. Because there was no time for NBC to develop a new show from scratch in light of the urgent SNL situation, The Midnight Special was replaced by SCTV, a weekly Canadian sketch comedy series performed by members of the Toronto satellite of Chicago's The Second City improvisational troupe. That program, in turn, would later be replaced with another music show, Friday Night Videos, in 1983, also produced initially by Ebersol.
Well I’d say the rise of cable, and in particular MTV, made shows like these less viable. Actually, I think this show broadcast its last episode in 1981, just months before MTV debuted.
He definitely is,I'm 63 and I think he was sexy, all the guys I know Don't understand the appeal, I know a lot of women of different ages that think the same way.
He hit the White gene lottery. You all know it but never own up to / admit it. You'd rather embarrass yourselves by pretending the features that made him handsome aren't White features.
I'll say what I said in a thousand reaction videos that I watched and commented on, we who lived in the 70s and 80s were witnesses to an era of musical Legends and Giants that will never be duplicated ever again. Those artists from that era were the veritable Olympian gods of Pop, Soul and Rock, and that is not hyperbole!
Uhhh...excuse me, but Prince desire was not to go to heaven, but to sleep in the dust and wait til his Resurrection. I know this because he was a Jehovahs Witness, and I study the bible.
My favorite musician of all time, an absolute music genius and legend. He was only twenty one when this was filmed. What a talent, I was crying in 2016 when we lost this genius. The original Prince band with Prince, Dez Dickerson, Andre Cymone, Gayle Chapman, Dr. Fink and Bobby Z.
I was 15 years old. I remember watching this; one Friday night, in 1979. Although I'd heard his song "Soft & Wet" a year earlier...I hadn't yet SEEN Prince. UNBELIEVABLE ...is the appropriate word.
YES SIR !!! At 16, I bought the Album "FOR YOU" that had Soft and Wet on it. Played the HOLD THING over and over on my Marantz QUAD SPEAKER system because I was so MESMERIZED that PRINCE PLAYED EVERY INSTRUMENT on EVERY CUT....AMAZING !!! LOLOL 🤣🧐😎
Prince Dez Dickerson Andre Cymone Gayle Chapman Matt Fink Bobby Z Few at that time could see Prince landing a solid foothold in the music business. But NO ONE could anticpate him becoming the international global icon and influential music power that he would become. Forver indelibly eitched into pop music consciousness to the extent that he changed the look and sound of music moving forward.
@franciscobuendiadelmolino Not yet. At this earlier stage it was Gayle Chapman. She would eventually introduce Lisa to Prince who Prince replaced Gayle with, once Gayle left the band. And it would be Lisa Coleman who introduced her good close childhood friend Wendy Melvoin to Prince. And the rest is history.
@@keithbell9348 You're absolutely right! When I first watched the clip I had the impression it could have been Lisa judging by her hairstyle, but it's definitely Gayle on keyboards here, thanks for the feedback!
Why didn't they let him actually perform this instead of a lip sync? This song sounds as good today as it did way back then. That man had some real balls to perform in thigh highs and a Speedo.
And it would be possible to release an album of new unheard songs every year up until then as well..Its is rumoured his vault has that much unreleased material
Damn! All these years later I thought Prince just popped up in the early 80’s. What an evolution of an artist. I think he’s an absolute genius musically.
@@eyeseeatlanta5727 His 1st album-Prince for you. The hit was 'Soft and wet'. Incidentally, released the same time as Rick James Debut album. 'Come and get it'.
I was 15 when this came out. I remember running to the Alco store to buy the 45 and I wore it out on my record player.😊. Loved him from that very start. This song made Prince.
This beautiful, brilliant, and talented man was DEFINITELY taken away too soon. He should still be here cranking out hits for us to hear. Because I know firsthand that there is still a vault FULL of unreleased music. Continue to R.I.P. Beautiful King.
In keeping with the emergence of newer & more innovative styles, Prince Rogers Nelson was (TRULY) a minister of music, & a Renaissance Man of sorts!!!! 🎼🎸🎹🎻🥁
My very first concert was Prince and Rick James ill-fated Punk and Funk tour not long after this video was made. Rick James was the bigger star at the time but Prince stole the show. I can still remember Prince coming out on stage in knee-high stockings, high heels and a trench coat, and gyrating on the floor to “Let’s Work”. What a genius he was.
My sister's and I would stay up to watch the Midnight Special every Friday. Talk about screaming and hollering when we saw this particular episode with Prince.😅❤😊 And after all this time at the age of 59..this is still a performance like no other💜💜💜💜💜
I saw this the summer that it aired. I was listening to him since the"For You" album. I was a young teen, and all of my friends were teasing me for listening to "that fa**ot". I said I'm not interested in his sexuality, I'm vibing on his music. Three or four years later those same friends were blasting his music, asking me if I'd heard it... Had me cracking up...
@@johnny6610 Well...they tried to tell him how much music he could release, after signing him to a 100 million contract in '92. He wanted to release when he felt like it...left in 96 when his contract ended. He got all his masters back from WB in 2014...in exchange for 2 albums. Prince had so much unreleased music, for him that was like most artists releasing a song. I'd say in the end he conquered WB.
One of the best to ever do it and could dress flamboyant and still be very masculine. My parents used to love this TV show they did showcase great talent
Wow amazing! Sweet Gayle Chapman (soon 2 B replaced by Lisa Coleman) on keyboards , Bobby Z (drums) and Dr. Fink (master Keyboards) (both soon 2 B members of The Revolution) Dez Dickerson (guitar) (appears in the movie Purple Rain -1984- singing "Mordenaire") and Andre Cymone (cousin?). Prince played ALL THE INSTRUMENTS AND VOCALS in this number!
Yeah Andre was not related to Prince at all. However, they met in grade school when Andre's family moved to the area. They struck up a conversation and discovered they both played music. So they started playing music together and they found out did they used to play together as little kids. Andre's father played with Prince's father.
Gayle was never a good fit for his band. Lisa fit like a glove because she could hold her own and she just got. She looked like a street-smart chick who was tough enough to hold her own
He was very extravagant. His outfit is crazy! It doesn't take away from the fact that he has a phenomenal voice and some great songs! Happy Tuesday... thank you for sharing! 💖
The outfit absolutely distracts from the performance😂😂 What the hell was he thinking. Thank God he developed some sense and dropped that approach to stage craft.
Prince…always, always on the very edge of the creative frontiers. As a young artist here he is bridging the gap between the late 70’s soul, funk and R&B and starting to show us glimpses of what his signature sound would sound like heading into the 80s. He was one of a kind, never to be duplicated and we, the world, will always miss him dearly and remember the good times and good vibes he “rained” down upon all of us!✊🏻
Probably the most talented entertainer of all time! He wrote all his songs, played all the instruments, sang and danced live. Lots of people can do one or two of those things. NOBODY else can all that with such skill!
Class of 1984 checking in. My bar fly career started senior year. I looked 13 but I had a banger fake ID. New Orleans had clubs for all the genres, dance, rock, punk, you name it.
💜🌹 l miss Prince so much l think about him alot. So heartbreaking he is gone.💔😥 First and best concert my BF ever went toooo. There is nobody like you.💜 🕊️💜
We can get a little bit of the magic when we play it, and even more whenever you get a little groove in your body and the ultimate gift is the Kid playing the whole damn time and trust me when you get into the best of the playlists of the 70s , 80s ,90s ,2K by the time you have played it all you'll never forget that Prince 💜♀️ was just better than them All 💟
Very, Well Said - Thank You! I miss Prince and am so thankful to see this performance for the very 1st time. I loved him and especially when he played homage to George Harrison on While My Guitar Gently Weeps song at the rock n’ roll hall of fame ‘2004 induction ceremony. As Tom Petty was quoted; “He just burned it up. You could feel the electricity of 'something really big’s going down here'.” R.I.P. Prince 🎸💜💜
Prince was on The Midnight Special? WTF ??? How early in his career is this then ? The man had guts though, no doubt about it. That outfit wouldn't really turn anyone's head in the later 80s and after, but in the late 70s ... that's some serious trail blazin' going on there.
AND THIS is why I feel for him when I was a young teen, I had never seen such bravado and boldness. his refusal to care what people thought and be this unique thing was so amazing to me. and though I didn't know it at my age, I was so, turned on LMAO
Following year Prince was opening act for The Rolling Stones, during their '81 "Tattoo You" tour. His set was not well received by most in attendance. Purple Rain drastically changed that gig.
At last !!!! Thanks ! Glad 2 have it in pristine quality. I'm sure the other song "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad ?" will B posted. Great channel ! So happy as a huge Prince fan...
@@PoundTown595yeah .. but given they had only done 12 concerts before this show and that he would go on to be one of the great live preformers... Maybe you can cut them a break
Wow! I didn't know Prince performed on Midnight Special. I also thought his first live TV appearance was on American Bandstand. Nice to see rare gems like this...
bandstand was recorded first in Dec 79 this was recorded Jan 8 1980...but it was aired first (thus he did not talk to Dr Hook). he did this and "Why you wanna treat me so bad?" (on Both shows). Yes they were required to lip-synch...but the were live Feb 1981 on SNL.
Giving you Mick Jagger vibes in his movements. Never noticed this before. Probably because we were all so enamored with what was then his very unique and refreshing style.
He is so cutting edge and different yet he displays so many characteristics of many past R&b soul come funk performers. He dances like James Brown but he plays lead guitar like Ernie Isley . You could tell by this performance that great things were going to come his way. So much talent. 😊
