Mendez can hit a move in any situation. I didnt think anything would top that takedown in the Big 10 Finals. Wrestling him would drive me crazy. Congrats Jesse.
Jesse Mendez is an Indiana kid, not an Ohio kid. In fact, Indiana has had 3 national champions and 4 national titles in 4 years. Nick Lee(2021,2022) Mason Paris(2023) Jesse Mendez(2024)
I am a season-ticket holder at the Covelli center. But I will say this there is a big difference and how a Penn State wrestler responds to winning a national title or four as to what just happened with Jesse. I love Jessie and everyone else on our team but there’s a big difference between our teams, philosophically.
Meh I kind of see it but not really. it just depends on the kid and how they usually respond to winning. Some of those kids are entertainers and show a lot of emotion after they win, especially for their first title. After one you have been there before and they control the emotions better. But I wouldn’t say either response is mutually exclusive to these programs. A great example was Anthony Cassar after he won his national title he was so excited and showed so much emotion. But Kyle Snyder was so nonchalant about his 3rd title so really it just depends on the kid
@@LakeNonaFan what I’m trying to say is how a kid responds to winning is not exclusive to the school they wrestle for. There have been plenty of psu wrestlers who show their emotions and other kids on other teams who don’t.
lol it seems like every time the other announcers try to invite Rock Harrison former official, part of announcing team with DC, Mike Cousins, and Jordan Burroughs) to speak, Cormier cuts in and talks some more himself🤣
Kinda reminds me watching Mendez my Freshman year. Saw him wrestle and pick everyone apart on the way to the finals and gets hit in the nastiest headlock I've ever seen. Not only does he manage to escape eventually after being put a minute on his back, I'm pretty sure he almost tech-falled the kid too. And that was his sophmore year.
@@boxturtle6809 I have no problem with that it's Midwest for me that I represent but the original comments were wrong is all I'm Saying but it doesn't even matter let's celebrate this great championship he just one
Apparently, Indiana makes more than basketball players. I wish more attention was given to wrestling. We are saturated with basketball coverage. @@emacthegreat8355
4:00 man that hits hard just a month ago I won conference but I only wrestled one match because there was only three kids and one got hurt and I so far that year I was 15-2 with both loses coming at state and I was wrestling up at state and went undefeated in school so while I knew I could and would of won no matter how many matches I had or who I faced if did kinda suck that I only got one match and the kid wasn’t that good
Great match up, but Wrestling has got to do something about shots leading to a decision like this. You want to reward aggressive attacks so Wrestling dynamic movement make things happen. More likely for matches to end up in tie ups as no one wants to expose themselves taking a shot.
This gives me hope for 4 time Illinois state champ, Ben Davino. Ohio state had a true sophomore, a rs freshman take 5th, and true freshman runner-up. If anyone is going to challenge Penn State it's going to be Ohio State.
It's embarrassing that our sport can have a champion who has not one committed offensive attack. He should have been hit with multiple stall calls. Stud at defense but zero offense. Beau didn't do a lot but he did 300% more than Jesse. Rules have to change. You should get 3 points for a takedown you initiate and 2 when you stuff an attempt and then convert it to your own.
Uhh Tons of fakes, snaps, and a shot in the first period? Jesse almost had a good shot attempt but Bartlett had an amazing down-block and keeping him back, then Bo almost takes him down. Lots of action there. Third period Bartlett and Mendez were going hard back and forth, Jesse lowkey almost lost and everyone knew that. Perfect attack from Bo and Jesse was able to roll through and score. There was no room for stalling in that whole match.
I understand what your saying and I feel similar. Wrestling has really slowed down for alot of these great wrestlers. I miss the high octane Cary Kolat style wrestling. Was much more entertaining.
@@justintime519 Kolat was great. Mesenbrink and Arujau are great. Mendez is good and he won under current rules. But he is boring and a staller. Fix also wasted everyone's time. He has zero offense in several matches. Our sport has to reward those who go after the win not those who only defend and stall.
@scottmcdonald9759 Mendez is a beast and he did what is needed to win. This was their 3rd time wrestling this year. Match 1 Mendez took every shot and lost on a counter in OT. Big Ten he took every shot and won on a counter late. I would like to know which matches of his besides this he was boring. 70% bonus rate, Jr World silver, wrestled over 30 matches, he is one of the most exciting young wrestlers. You will see him at Olympic Trials.
@@dowutado I amend my original statement. Beau had two committed shots. Mendez had none. Mendez won. He did what he had to. Previous matches were whatever. If the script is flipped I would say the same about Bartlett. The sport needs to reward the guy who goes for it. To show up to a title match and not go is off to me. To lose while attempting to make things happen is not embarrassing. To win while making no attempt to make something happen is, in my opinion sad. Mendez is really good. I just can't root for anyone whose plan is to only wait and counter.
1st period Mendez tries high crotch Bartlett front headlocks to stalemate Bartlett 0shots 2 .45 half shot Mendez .27 Bartlett low single and Bam Mendez hits high leg over head a secures a single leg (Sasso) funk 3 Video doesn’t lie Bartlett DB attemp ends up behind and can’t return Mendez hits Gramby great counter that Ends up DB leg control. great Match NO Stalling by either - Kept wrestling and a counter wrestler is often a tough opponent like a counter puncher is Like Nickel has developed- Tip your hat to Mendez and Bartlett the young men in the arena
Personally never wanted to cut a lot so i dropped from bout 137 to 132. Wasn't the muscular but was pretty well built at the time. However the kid who won state cut from 144 to 132 so it really depends on what you're comfortable and capable of.
