All 4 NEXT TO NORMAL understudies-Jessica Phillips, Michael Berry, Meghann Fahy, Timothy Young-performing "Just Another Day" at the At This Performance understudy concert on April 20, 2009. Missing the first minute or so, sorry.
God, even on youtube in front of a black curtain this show gives me goosebumps. I can't wait to see it again. What a beautiful show--and a the understudies seem to all be fantastic.
Thanks for uploading! I think i pretty much fell in love with all the N2N understudies. I'd have been interested in seeing "You Don't Know"/"I Am the One", but I guess this way they got to use everyone in the song. Mostly I wanna see Jessica Phillips get angry -- I think she'd make a great Diana. :)
I absolutely love this show, seen it 6 times, however, I have yet to see all the understudies, in the video they all sound amazing. Can't wait to them all. I absolutely love Alice Ripley and Jennifer Domiano. Does anyone have any idea when the understudies are all on?
I saw Michael as Dan in Act II only (poor Bobby was still sick. He pushed himself and tried to come back but he really just wasn't ready.) and oh. my. god. He was actually phenomenal. I didn't think I'd ever be able to see anyone besides Bobby as Dan, but Michael really nailed it. I love Alice, really, I do, but I would kill to see Jessica as Diana.
@thnkgoodness07 a lot of natalie's music is also written in compound meters, so, for example, swapping between 5/8 and 6/8 nearly every measure. Superboy and the Invisible Girl, as well as the 'Heys', for example. So, in addition to the pitches, the metre is difficult. Diana is almost solid 4/4 and 3/4, in contrast.
saw Jessica Phillips at Sunday matinee and she was great! I did miss the craziness in Alice Ripley's (LOVE her) eyes...but Jessica brings a a little bit of warmth to the part. nice choices
Huge Jessica fan. Is it just me or is natalie's music written to make whom ever sings it sound under pitch at times? It doesn't help that it's placed in super tricky spots. Tough stuff to sing- kudos!
Yeah, it must be a dagger to the heart when the crowd demands a refund when the primary is out and the u/s is called in. Jessica had to fill in for 3 performances this past Friday and Saturday - apparently she rocked it.
changinandhow: i love her too. her voice *is* distinctive and sets her apart from other people - that's great. but unfortunately there's no arguing the fact that she sings under pitch. to whoever else: what's the point of giving my comment negative-thumbs-down-whatevers - i'm just pointing something out! if someone used a tuner to see where her pitch was, it would be flat! it's not an insult, it's just a matter of fact.
I saw the show recently, Alice and Jennifer were both out that day, and I was really disappointed at first (I had heard lots of good things about Alice), but I really liked both Jessica and Meghann. :)
I have seen the show 9 times and never have seen Jessica or Tim go on. Intrigued about Tim as Gabe but think Aaron owns the stage when he is on. Meghann Fahey is gorgeous and I have to admit-a Natalie that I liked more than Jen's--less petulant and angry all the time. There is this haunting wounded quality though to Alice's singing voice that works SO WELL with the character of Diana. She seems literally in pain in a way that I don't see Jessica do here-but maybe she does when she goes on...
I'm just gunna say, that when it comes to pitch issues...they're all under. ALL of them, at least in this video. But I didn't seem them live. So maybe it's just a bad recording?
I really adore timothy young and while Meghann Fahy has an incredible voice i dont think she is rough enough to be natalie she looks to put together and Jessica Phillips also a cool twist to the character
I also agree that Jessica is much smoother vocally than Alice. As amazing as Alice is, she does get pitchy at times. She's still FANTASTIC and has a great voice, but there's no denying that she is pitchy and flat at times. Her voice is distinctive, however, and that combined with her acting is what I love about her.
jessica is just SO much better vocally than alice. don't get me wrong - i LOVE alice ripley and i think she is a fierce actress - but there is something wrong with her voice. she sings flat and sounds strained the entire time... the straining i can sort of get over because of the rock style, but the flatness.. is inexcusable. again, i love her... but really, people... the other understudies don't do much for me, though.
when jessica isn't singing or saying a line she looks bored. it's probably an acting choice but it doesn't translate especially not in this recording. maybe she's better live... but she bores me in this.
