For me Jessica Steen really represented a civilian, international successful negotiator. Smart, critical, knows when to speak up and when not, and all of that with a ton of energie. I really enjoyed her in that role and would be very interested to see what she would to in Atlantis. On the other hand I really can not imagine the series without Torri^^ I kinda wished Torri would not have taken over the character but played a new one, to lead Atlantis.

Can't really argue with the production at this point, from their perspective it went from one family event that affected the scheduling to the discovery that it was instead a yearly thing that required a lot of time and effort, meaning they would need to take this under consideration each year. Not to mention that she was not upfront about it either. She seems like a nice person but in any other jobs she would have been let go as well....

Exactly. If it was indeed her agent who told her to lie to her employers, he is very much responsible because that was the worst part. But the other thing that's just bad optics is when you have those two days of work and one day in between - especially when you KNOW that you want to spend the next 7 years in that working environment - flying home for that one day is a bad look. That's when you meet everyone, get to know them, ask your crazy questions, develop a rapport, etc.

I dunno... if you were on my project, and spent most of your time talking about and focusing your energy on a different project I'd be concerned about your level of commitment too. Family reunion, concert, truth, fiction... doesn't matter. If I was planning for long term, I'd probably just go a different direction to avoid trouble. No hard feelings for Jessica, just... the show would've been my priority.

I feel thy did a disservice to the Stargate brand with switching out the actors instead of writing he out I hate it when shows do this and I'm sure she would have brought something else to the role i felt that Torri Higginson gave a more aggressive position to the role then Jessica Did in her first appearance

I agree! Tori was good in her own way, I suppose, but I could not connect her at all to Jessica's performance. No resemblance whatsoever, they felt disconnected. They didn't even bother to keep the same first name - I found that very odd! So on a personal level, I could never really like her the way I liked Jessica, and I just "accepted" Tori was there. She did the job well, but not how I would've liked it had they kept Jessica instead and let her grow into her/ her character's role! 🙂

@@kevinkirkby1484 Nice! Thanks for sharing. Jessica has such beautiful eyes and distinct voice. I enjoyed all the characters as well. I followed Clancy Brown because he kept up with the actress who played his onscreen daughter throughout her battle with cancer. He seemed a stand up guy! Tim Curry was a wonderful villain. “Julia” was very duplicitous, haha. They seemed to introduce ideas not often explored (at least in main stream sci-fi). Like: Antonio Sabato Jr’s character Alonzo being much older in years but having slept most of it away in cryo sleep- is the money worth everyone you have ever known being dead? ; or Rebecca Gayheart’s character being no longer married because their marriage contract had expired while they were in cryo sleep. Just interesting ideas. I wish they had longer to explore.

I thought they casted someone else for Weir because Jessica looked too similar to Amanda Tapping. Short blonde hair, blue eyes. It was okay in SG-1 as a supporting character in one episode, but not for the series main cast. Newcomers to the series could have been confused. At least, that's what I thought.

I agree with some of the comments above that she was distracted during her work on the show even by her own account. And in addition to that she then acknowledges she was demanding of the producers and writers and perhaps not in a good way. I do think she was a better Dr. Weir and I credit her with being honest about all this.

They couldn't say due to legal reasons why they "let someone go". It's a shame that even there people still felt that way about quite normal things and preferred that "normal fit in walk in a line" kind of life and never looked deeper into things to understand motivations and commitments. A lot of employers expect people to drop their lives and magically commit to employer but that is not the kind of person anyone should want, someone who drops their existing commitments when something "better" comes along. Would have been nice to see you in Atlantis for sure!

To be honest, I always kind of assumed it was a "money issue", or some kind of "creative differences" in relationship to the direction of how producer/actor wanted the character to go overall. Or, if nothing else, simply a situation of 'scheduling" that resulted in the switch. I wasn't happy with it then, nor happy with it now. The BEST thing to have done when you get a casting switch, is to simply do a "character switch". It isn't that difficult. Especially with someone who is "appointed" by the government. They simply wanted to make a change in leadership for political reasons or budget concerns. And in Weir's situation, the PERFECT thing to do would have been to have her do the "Antarctic Peace Negotiations" as reason she isn't there, but Dr. So-and-so has been appointed head of the Atlantis project.

I totally see why they let her go. She comes across as very high-maintenance, and there's no way someone can be that committed to two BIG things at one time. This reminds me of the time I asked a uni prof to defer an upcoming exam because I had bought tickets to a UFC event months earlier with some friends, thinking the semester would be over by that point. For some reason this year in particular the semester ended a week later than previously. Being young and naive I thought it was a perfectly reasonable argument that I had a previous commitment (though not as important as organizing the event itself.) I'll never forget the look of absolute disgust on the profs face - Wouldn't budge an inch on the matter. I could tell they thought it was barbaric sport to watch. I ended up having to rebook my flight in order to do my exam in time and barely got to the event in time. didn't enjoy the trip as much as I would have liked to, and certainly wasn't as focused on my exam as I could have been. Lesson learned LoL

Well ... I can understand their situation. They're responsible for spending millions of dollars on these shows and the lead actors are essential to their success. They don't care about the lives of these actors - they care about being *_certain_* that they will be available. That and they have other people that they can use instead. So - she had this incredible commitment to Burning Man - and they're like ... _"What? She's involved in ... that? No. This is not the person we want to risk millions of dollars on."_ A similar thing happened with _Babylon 5_ - the producers wanted the actors (Claudia Christen?) to make commitments and this one actress had a conflict. 5 was coming to an end and she'd taken work on another project. JMS told her he was fine with what she was doing - but - the producers wanted an iron clad contract that she would be solely available to them - so they had her written out of the series. .

At last someone not afraid to swim against the current. I do prefer Torri as Elizabeth Weir as well. There was a dictatorial side in Jessica's version that was really unpleasant. Granted, the two actresses played two very different versions of the character, but, as a leader, I think the more reserved but empathic type of leader who manages to get the results she's expecting without having to go into a temper flare is definitely the type a mission as extraordinarily demanding as the Pegasus project needed. Higginson had a firm hand, but all in subtlety and without that incisive edge Jessica's version demonstrated. Of course, one's mileage will vary enormously on this one. By several hundreds of light-years, probably :) I'm surprised at the percentage of negative opinions about Higginson and Higginson's character. What comments would the same persons leave after an interview with Higginson (there might be one: I'm still only beginning to discover this interesting series).

Altho they werent great to her replacement either. I feel like someone should have said hey...Higgins, ask the ex girlfriend what you're in for. Might have saved her some unpleasantness. But a lot of things always bothered me about Atlantis. Like how a female led the entire team, this female was also the crossover that appears on SG1, then carries the show over to Atlantis, but then they give the alpha male top billing because he's a man and scifi is so male dominated an audience that this was perceived as the way to do it.

She was a much much better Weir than Torri Higginson. Jessica's Weir was commanding and confident and absolutely brilliant, and Torri's was... passive. Barely there. Jessica's Weir was a leader, Torri's was kind of wallpaper. Nothing against Torri Higginson or her acting ability. But the way she played Weir, that's a character I would not put into a position of leadership and would not respect as a leader in a position supervising me. I've had managers like her Weir and things don't go well. But Jessica's Weir - that was a character who was driven and who got things done. I think as a fandom many of us regret that Jessica didn't keep the part, and now to find out why and how is... heartbreaking.

There's something dictatorial with Jessica's version. Of Weir. I much preferred Higginson's conciliatory manner. You ultimately get things done in a better way if you show some empathy, smtg Jessica's character didn't seem to have tendencies for. Sorry, but ultimately, for the sake of a TV series, Higginson was the obvious choice. Between SGA and Burning Man, I take SGA...

Both Jess and Torri were great at their roles. I really really dislike actor/actress change for the same character that's why no matter what everyone think I was against changing Amber Heard with another actress to play Mera in Aquaman despite who Amber is and what she did cause its about the movie which isn't gonna look good in the future with a changed actress for the same character. That's why! We see how awful this looks in Stargate every time we are watching it. Its weird and it looks like a cheap production. Anyways. Jess should've kept going as dr. Weir in the following seasons and as much as we all love Torri she wasn't gonna be in the show at all and everything would've been fine now considering we wouldn't known about her! Or at least they could've given her another role and name to start leading Atlantis...

I always wondered what the story was. Thanks! Although I was a big fan of Tori. BTW, Jessica... lay off the Adderall when doing interviews.

She seems like a diva in her own mind. Something about the burner mind really just brings out so much arrogance and ego, yet after seeing how the burning man went this past year and how ill equipped people were in dealing with the muddy lake bed they park on.... i can see why the producers of stargate let her go. We'll leave it at that.
