I was at one of these performances at The Met. Will never forget the singing and the devastating finale.

It is beyond belief that this performance has not been released on DVD! I saw it when it was telecast from the MET!

Henry Murray I did too, Henry. I was enthralled. It was back in 1987 and I still remember that production and how wonderful it was. Maria Ewing, Jessye Norman, Regine Crespin, Florence Quivar. Brilliant.

I have little against translated operas in general, but here it does mar the integration with the music. Heroic singing.

If you have a video of the finale of this production, please post it. There are a lot of videos of the finale in so-so productions. The finale in this production was great and used to be on RU-vid, but not now.

Norman's voice is just way too powerful for the role and it overwhelms the music. Completely.

@@organboi I guess neither of you have heard Regine Crespin(a former Brunnhilde) in the role. Her voice was huge and she was perfection.

It was Poulenc's intention that it be performed in the language of the country it was staged in. It's why there are multiple premiere performances from the 1950s.

Gross. In English?! Wtf??? Unacceptable.
@brookesdecker7188
@brookesdecker7188 3 года назад
Poulenc actually wished that the opera be performed in the vernacular of where it was being presented, so not that gross.
