a timeless classic work... my FAVORITE opera of them all! and with the GREAT Jessye Norman... ohhh... and wonderful Maria Hughing... who could ever forget this performance... ever...
Henry Murray I did too, Henry. I was enthralled. It was back in 1987 and I still remember that production and how wonderful it was. Maria Ewing, Jessye Norman, Regine Crespin, Florence Quivar. Brilliant.
If you have a video of the finale of this production, please post it. There are a lot of videos of the finale in so-so productions. The finale in this production was great and used to be on RU-vid, but not now.

En dépit de tout le génie de Madame Norman, l’anglais transforme et dénature complètement l’œuvre. Cela devient une « soupe « là où Poulenc a composé pour l’articulation française, claire, précise. Cette musique n’est absolument pas interprétable dans une autre langue que le Français. Celui de Bernanos, en l’occurrence. Très dommage .
It was Poulenc's intention that it be performed in the language of the country it was staged in. It's why there are multiple premiere performances from the 1950s.
