The Netgear ReadyNAS Pro was the fastest Network Attached Storage box we've ever had in the lab. With 6 drive bays, dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, and enough CPU horsepower to run pretty much any service you might need on your network, it set the bar for SMB to Small Enterprise class storage.
Still, the Pro wasn't for everybody. Some wanted the same kind of performance in a smaller, more energy-efficient package... well say hello to the NVX.

I still use my Infrant ReadyNAS NV. Yes, NV, not NV+. I recently had a motherboard die on it, and Netgear support really stepped up to the plate to help me fix it. As a result, my NV is still chugging along. The NVX is on the list of things to by, for sure. Great review, Father.

I have been looking at this exact model for purchase! This review GREATLY influences my decision!

Agreed. You never know when a first time user is going to show up and see the episode because he searched whatever was reviewed.

Syndil1, Well-said. -It's true that the Consumer/SMB/Enterprise distinctions really are marketing-speak that can be arbitrary. However, they CAN be useful for those who are looking for a particular feature-set. I believe that a NV can ABSOLUTELY be used in SMB and even Enterprise environments, but the NVX or the Pro have more headroom for future growth and that's really what the distinctions are about. Still, point taken and absolutely worth pondering as you shop for a NAS. . Peace, Fr. Robert

I just LOVE your introduction! Really! Do not even think about changing it.. With every episode its different, and its like a "running gag" - you know it will be there but you do not know in what way. I was a Protestant, currently I am officially an atheist (this has a lot to do with taxes unfortunatley). But its not about what you are on government paper, its about what you belive. And I bet Fr. Robert belives in God and his cause, so just let him spread his joy! Why not? Greetings from Germany

Num1shark, They really have. I remember some of the VERY early Netgear network storage devices... not the best of gear. Then they bought Infrant and suddenly they're putting out one great NAS solution after another. . Peace, Fr. Robert

Great review! ! Personally I still think its much cheaper to use FreeNAS with older PC hardware. FreeNAS offers the same features and more (iSCSI and Media streaming). It also offers networking configuration to allow for multiple NICs, If consumers want a small NAS device at a price, they'll pay for it. If they want an affordable option they'll choose open source software & use older hardware.

TradieTrev, I am ALL about building your own. In my mind there is no doubt that you can build a FASTER solution for LESS money if you decide to create a dedicated NAS box. I know this because I've built them. Where a system like the ReadyNAS (or an EMC array for that matter) becomes cost-efficient is when you have a non-techie using it or a business IT need for reliability. . Me? I build for fun, but I use a ReadyNAS for the stuff that really matters. . Peace, Fr. Robert

Gbjerke, Thanks for the input. I've been thinking about it... but our numbers from TTS have been showing that we're still getting plenty of first-time viewers... and the whole "priest/techie" thing is something that I really identify by. We DID shorten our intro quite a bit and the whole "priest/Jesuit" thing only takes up 5 seconds of a 11 minute episode... but we'll keep tweaking. . Peace, Fr. Robert

mfasouletos, The current D-Link storage solutions are not really designed to compete with the ReadyNAS line -- especially not with the ReadyNAS business line. I'm not saying that the D-Link gear is bad for that price point, but the Netgear stuff will outperform the D-Link NAS boxes in every important performance and service metric. . Peace, Fr. Robert

Father - How does this compare to the d-link DNS-343 NAS? What are your personal thoughts? I know the d-link is older but you had reviewed it and i am now torn between the two. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you in advance!

wiseye61, Or it could just be 1 guy who is both a priest and a geek, and not ashamed of being either. . Sometimes people are difficult to place into the stereotypes that we have developed. Your image of a priest may not be that of a tech-savvy engineer, but then again, in the episode did I ever say "God", "Convert", "Sin" or "Religion"? -- Doesn't sound very priestly either, does it? The bottom line is that I am a priest who is also passionate about technology. . Peace, Fr. Robert

@ResidentG33k Even though i myself am not a catholic (im protestant), but i think is perfectly OK for the guy to 'plug' the fact that he is a member of the Jesiut Priest order . After all when shops and businesses do reviews on RU-vid , they often plug an advert for thier business or advertise a website. This man is a Jesuit Priest, that is his 'business' serving God. thumbing him down just because he mentions the fact that he is a priest despite his good review is just being petty, grow up!
