Let's swap hard drives from my ReadyNAS 214 to my new ReadyNAS 424 from Netgear. I was not sure if it would corrupt or lose my data. The best way to find out is to just do it!
You can check out the Netgear ReadyNAS 424 at our store: store.westnetw...

We Have ReadyNas 214, after firmware update there is showing data:0% free and console page is not opening ( not accessing), we have 8 TB 3 disks. we have brand new another ReadyNas 424, is this use for swap without loosing data?

Hi Peter, thanks for the video. Did you tried moving from a netgear rn6000 to a rackaeble 2304?

I'm looking at doing something slightly different. I have a 4 bay 314 and 2 raid 1 setups (1 & 2) and (3 & 4) Drive 1 has degraded and needs replacing but it is painful backing up 3 tb of data. Sure I'm transferring it at about 100 Mb / second over the network but that is still painful to do it for a whole 3tb of data. (4 or more hours due to some slowdowns with smaller files) I'm curious , If I shutdown and pull drive 1 out and replace it with the same size drive will the NAS just rebuild all the data from the good drive #2 to #1 (clone itself) I should really back this up just incase but don't want to wait 4 + hours (More likely 12 hours as the little file transfers slow this thing right down to 10 - 20 Mb / second UGH !)

That is correct with the mirrored array the idea is to provide data resiliency over two drives, so you should be able to take the drive out and replace it and the system will rebuild the array. It will take some time to rebuild but at least you don’t lose your data You can also buy a second unit, synchronize the two units for back up, and then upgrade your current unit to a better raid configuration taking advantage of all four drives.

@@WestNetworksLLC Thanks for that.. You are right and that is what I thought but wasn't 100% sure. I backed up all my data just incase (Took about 15 hours overnight) but then just stuck a nice new drive in and yep, it copied from the 2nd drive and fixed itself without need of an overnight backup. Rebuilding only took about 3 hours as local . The progress of course showed on the display on the front of the NAS. ON the upside, now I know for when drive 2 dies in the future as drive 1 and 2 were the same age.

Very insightful and easy to follow. I wonder if the same is true when moving from the Netgear stora MS2110 (2 bay box) to a Netgear 214? I already set up my 214 and started saving data to it but I’m wondering if I can add (plug and play) to a free 214 bay the MS2110 and see the folders/files show up as well? Thoughts? Thanks West!

Edit: “i’m wondering if I can add (plug and play) the MS2110 disk to an available bay on the 214...”

Interesting, but remember, stupid people will be watching this. Remember to remind them to always back up their data before attempting this. Nothing is fool proof, there are always upgraded fools out there.
