In Hebrews 5:1-11, the author gives evidence that Jesus is our High Priest.
The high priest was essential for the ancient Hebrews. He played a vital role in their worship and communication with God as the mediator between God and the people. All the high priests before Jesus were merely prophetic foreshadows of His high priestly ministry.
2 qualifications for every high priest:
He had to be called by God from among men. (Hebrews 5:4)
He had to be compassionate toward men when they sinned. (Hebrews 5:2)
Of the hundreds of high priests that came before Him, Jesus is distinguished as the great High Priest. Jesus is the only mediator and intercessor we need. He ended the need for any other high priest because His sacrifice was perfect and complete.
3 reasons why Jesus is the great High Priest:
He is great because of His exaltation.
He is great because of His experience.
He is great because of His perpetual exploits.
