RESSURECTION SCENE WITH THOMAS SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN EXCLUDED, AS IT IS POWERFUL LESSON FOR ALL. OTHER THAN THAT VERY GOOD MOVIE.
Every year since childhood and I am now 53, I always watch this every Lenten season and during times of desolation, to find comfort in Jesus' sacrifice and healing words.
Not sure if Robert Powell is aware of this fact, but his portrayal of Lord Jesus Christ brought millions and millions to repentance and Christ as Savior..On top of that it brought glory, honor, and praise to God almighty till the end of time and beyond. Well done Robert Powell, even if you aren't aware of the glory you brought to God, He sees what you have done for Him and will never forget it.

My child, who is 21 years old, saw Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth, and said this is the best depiction of Christ, Mary, and the Apostles imaginable!! I agree!! I saw this movie when I was younger and I will never forget it!! Robert Powell played Jesus impeccably! I actually was able to find the movie on DVD and it is one of my most prized possessions.. It was beyond awesome...the man Robert Powell and the other actors also, this was so close to the scripture and so dignified. I watch it ever Easter since I was a child, now I'm 51...it helps my soul ever time. Jesus...
Maestro Zeffirelli was truely inspired by a Higher Being to make this film. Every actor , from Olivia Hussey to Ian McShane ,no actor was miscast . Thank you for giving the world a wonderful cinematic image, I wish this film was shown on TV more often.
In my country Greece they show the movie every Easter and the divide it in 4-5 episodes that they show at the Great Week and end on Great Saturday when the Rise of Jesus from the dead happens

I was a young teenager when this serial was televised. I can remember it having a profound effect upon me and my family. I can even remember discussing it with friends at school who were equally enamered. Imagine that, teenagers discussing Jesus! I became a Christian later in life in '85 but even now certain scenes and scriptures from this have stayed with me. Zefferelli was certainly inspired with this masterpiece, thank you and rest in peace.
What a beautiful and soul saving movie. I watch it every Easter...I found through out the movie symbols of Hope and Faith. Robert Powell represented Jesus the best.
It's most definitely a classic! It's perhaps my favorite movie of all time. There are many anointed scenes in this six hour plus movie that bring in the reality of who Jesus Christ is and what He has done for us.

I think Robert Powell played an excellent part of the real way Jesus was in Biblocal times. From the way he looked to dressed and even may look like him a bit. Thanks to the wonderful Mr Powell for his wonderful gifted part he gave us.
To be more precise, this is Jesus that We have imagined or that we have painted in our hearts. The chances that the real Jesus had light colored hair or blue eyes are almost non existent for a country of the middle east. Anyways, Robert's acting and appearance is unique for sure!

I’m so pleased to see this explanation. I had often thought how sad it was that the most important part The Resurrection had been virtually left out of the film. Now I understand and it’s ok.
Sigue siendo el fallo de la pelicula. El final es muy corto, insignificante. La Resurrección es la razón del Cristianismo y debía mostrarlo con toda la pompa...y dejar bien en claro que resucitó porque hay películar que no dejan bien en claro la resurrección, dejan esa duda flotando si se robaron el cuerpo, y por lo tanto esas películas no son puramente cristianas y son mas históricas. Tienen que estar plasmada las Escrituras en el filme. La telenovela brasileña "Jesús" es la que muestra todo como figura en la Biblia con una Resurrección hermosa.
Seeing this, now I know that Franco Zeffirelli was well aware of the weight of directing a film about Jesus; and while he tried his best to do so, he admits that there are things he cannot accurately portray (he can, but it's "risky"), so he'd rather ditch it rather than to show it and botch it. But divine providence guided him, even in the final minutes of production, to come up with an amazing film.

Mr Zeffirelli has earned his place in Heaven. He walked right in. This masterpiece made for TV! has done more for conversions to Christ than many churches have.
But no one ‘earns’ their way into Heaven. ‘All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.’ Jesus earned it for us. We can only believe that he paid for our sin. That’s the message of the Good News.

Such truth...I fell in love with my wife prior to ever meeting her. due to the distance we talked on line we never even talked on the phone..but she as I both felt the love in between us ...when we finally met in person we finalized the deal in a second. We all have a relationship with christ that is individual.....I believe that's how Christ wants it.

I love this movie, watch it every year during the Easter season. I think he made the right decision on the ending, however I wish we could have an alternate ending option to view the other resurrection scene.

Robert Powell did an outstanding job, but all the Jesus films offer unique perspectives into Jesus's life and each film gives different qualities of Jesus that others don't. So I watch them all and get the full picture of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ's life.
Zefferelli is magnificent. A handsome blonde! I bet some would guess Zefferelli to be dark haired, dark-eyed. Nope. There are blonde Italians, blonde Jews.-- What a cast he had.

Zeffirelli should have included a Resurrection scene in this movie.... The movie is now incomplete without it... A resurrection scene can still be added to this fine movie and I hope it happens... Jesus's face does not have to be shown after He leaves the tomb...
The original 4-night miniseries on TV in the late 70’s DID show the Lord appearing in the room where the apostles were in all His glory. It was so beautiful! This & other scenes were also deleted in this version. It was originally 8 hours long. Everyone watched it every Easter.
such restraint, respect and good taste is the hallmark of mastery of craft. Good to see. However I think the shroud gives many indications now on how to depict the radiance of the resurrection...
Anyone who has an older Pre digital ( dvd or streaming) version as in the VHS will have this final scene still for the most part in the movie/ series. Older people definitely remember this part. When you see a short documentary about them cutting a scene it was NOT the scene that is being presented. It may have been slightly shortened But that ending scene of Jesus with the disciples and saying that He will be with us was absolutely in it.

When I saw the film, I wondered why it showed the empty grave, cut to this scene, then went back to the empty grave for the credits. Now that I know that Jesus was to be shown resurrected first and then we see Zerah looking at the empty grave, that scene seems to have been written as a poetic ending right before credits. As far as the film's editing structure goes, "Peter consoling the disciples 👉 Jesus showing up 👉 Zerah's last line" was the best way to go. To portray the best message, though, the film as-is (Peter's consolation 👉 Zerah's last line 👉 Jesus saying farewell) is superior.
The difficulty he describes is true, but surely something better than the limp ending that was ultimately used could have been done. After six hours of setup, the viewer deserves at least an Ascension scene.
Jesus from the Bible was a lot more different than this one or any other movie made about his persona, his character. He was a strong man, with a powerful presence, spoke with such command that people was left in astonishment of how he would speak about any topic and especially about the Kingdom of God!. He wasn't a fragile man or someone under the spell of something. This movie was ok in my book, but it showed the messiah in a way that was quite far from what the gospels mention about him. Zeffirellis Jesus needed to be a much stronger character.
