Let's add another axis! This is the cross slide. Just like the other moving parts, this is lever actuated. The machining footage will appear in an upcoming video... Probably around the same time as the machining footage from the last video :(. Why isn't there more time in a day??

Wonderful attention to detail, we enjoy your build very much as vintage machine re-builders and owners of same, you are doing great.

Rewatching this series as I plan a lever-linkage conversion for an old benchtop milling machine.

I would mill a small slot in the top of the dovetail where the thumb screw is to stop the surface being lifted from repeated use

Yeah good idea - call out the Abom 😀 I only saw one guy get away with that. Good work with the lathe - wish I could make one myself

He'll put a giant tap wrench on my head and thread me into the ground :| .

Would it then be: Carbide -> steel -> Aluminium game? Carbide beats steel, steel beats aluminium, aluminium jams carbide.

Aluminium beats plastic, plastic beats skin
@nixie2462
@nixie2462 6 лет назад
XD, but skin does what? (I meant it as a rock-paper-scissors game)

Beach&BoardFan So, if I just "beat" you, does it count as the first ever game of CSA? (Carbide-Steel-Alumimium) XD No merit really, the phrase "carbide beats steel" was going to get picked up at some point. ;)

Super cool to see the progress on this guy. How are you planning to take up play on the cross slide? I didn't see you show any gibs for the dovetail. Orchid the fit good enough that you don't need them?
@TabletopMachineShop
@TabletopMachineShop 6 лет назад
It's a pretty decent fit, so i'm happy with no adjustment (just a setscrew for tensioning) for now. This is certainly not the best way of doing it, so I may end up cutting off one side of the dovetail and adding a bronze section that can be tightened. We'll have to see how it performs!

Sir, what you do is absolutely amazing. But do you have finished projects? Or all projects shown in your videos are still in progress? If so, when do you plan to finish CNC lathe?
@TabletopMachineShop
@TabletopMachineShop 6 лет назад
I valiantly strive to finish projects! Haha I've finished lots of stuff before I started a RU-vid channel, I just don't really like rolling back too far. I feel like I'm improving over time, so i'm hesitant to go back and show something I made when I wasn't as far along

get some bondhus allen wrenches, you wont regret it, if your still looking for a more elegant pin design for the linkages, use dowel pins, or make some, ream one piece for a press fit and the other for clearance, press them in, no heads, threads, cross holes, c clips to worry about.
@TabletopMachineShop

I really do need to get nice allen wrenches :p.

Why use two rods on the lever?
@TabletopMachineShop
@TabletopMachineShop 6 лет назад
I wasn't sure a single 1/4" rod would be stiff enough, but I didn't want to make the whole link thicker by using a thicker rod, so I used two to stiffen it up.

What IS the machinists version of rock paper scissors? carbide>steel>? what loses to steel but beats carbide?

Diamond

no steel wouldn't beat diamond

Someone else posted Carbide Steel Aluminum, where aluminum clogs up carbide. I'd have to think it was something like an interrupted cut (steel can cut it but carbide gets smashed). Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue though...
@bexpi7100
@bexpi7100 6 лет назад
how about carbide beats steel, concrete beats carbide, and steel beats concrete? I don't think i have to explain myself, but i will anyways, since carbide is so brittle when you drop it on concrete it will shatter, but steel being durable can chip away at the concrete. it doesn't have to be concrete, could just be a rock

Ah, not a real Jewelers Lathe....but a pretend one....it's going to have too much slop in it.
@TabletopMachineShop
@TabletopMachineShop 6 лет назад
Im not sure there’s even such thing as a jewelers lathe... i just called it that. The slop should be pretty easy to adjust out
