What is it like to being a Jew on Christmas? Do Jews celebrate Christmas? What do Jewish people actually do on Christmas? I'm here to answer all your questions and tell you what it's really like! I saw the Buzzfeed video for this and wanted to give my personal take.

Hi Marion! You are such a sweetie...this was a cute video !!! As a Christian, I can say from the heart that I LOVE Jewish people and I find your customs fascinating. Regardless of our differences, you are God’s chosen people. Keep those videos coming, my dear! You have become one of my top 3 favorite RU-vidrs, but I’m sure it has nothing to do with your absolutely adorable angel-on-earth son Max !!! Sending much love...🤣😘❤️

Christ lived as a Jew, however He was not Jew-ish and He Himself did not celebrate Christmas; He celebrated Hanukkah! Christmas is a selfish celebration of capitalism - means nothing to Christ - who is the real Jew. Shalom to you

Please don’t hesitate to watch “119 ministries” on RU-vid you’re one of us your grafted in there’s no difference as long as there is genuine change of your soul and spirit I encourage you to learn about your Jewish identity in yeshuah I was born gentile but abandoned By my parents and taken in under the guidance of rabbis and raised by Jews it’s all I’ve ever known I was removed by HaShem I am convinced and very very young I would say about 1st grade is when G_d was working to rescue me I barely remember celebrating Christmas but it’s all negative memories it’s okay it comes from Yuletide a pagan holiday anyways I’m glad G_d left the 99 to find me I don’t know why he would but I guess he’s just that good I was taken from pastors my parents who fell from G_d and ended their ministry but thank you to HaShem that a messianic Jewish family took me and ran

Tonight, as I listen to your channel, I’m making my first Hanukkah decorations! Last year was the final Christmas for our family to celebrate. After learning the roots of Christmas, we decided that God wouldn’t be pleased by us celebrating it. This past spring, my husband dragged our gorgeous brand new tree to the curb for the trash. It definitely is a challenge not celebrating anymore when it’s been a huge part of your entire life. Thanks for sharing! We will be hitting up the best Chinese restaurant on Christmas Day and making new family traditions and memories!

I always say that my 4yo daughter has Christmas FOMO 😂One tradition we have is we try to get together at some point in December with some close friends that do celebrate Christmas and my daughter can enjoy their tree, decorations, etc. We explain to her that it's a mitzvah to help other people celebrate their holidays and to learn about other religions. We try not to compensate for Christmas with Hanukah because, as you said, the holiday isn't as significant. This year, we've been talking to her a lot about how lucky we are to have Shabbat, an amazing holiday that comes every week. Great video as always!!

As a CandE christian (Christmas and Easter!) but growing up I was always kinda jealous of my Jewish friends. I don’t know, I’m such a holiday person and my Jewish friends had so many cool holidays with so many deeply meaningful messages behind them. I just got Christmas and the Easter bunny. It probably was a grass is always greener thing. Now I appreciate the fact that I get Christmas and try to get invited to as many Hanukkah parties as possible.

Marion, I love all of your videos but this one was so wonderful. I so appreciate your honesty and seeing a Jewish point of view about Christmas! I always had some Jewish envy because the celebrations were so closely connected to specific traditions (but as a kid, I so desperately wanted to go to summer camp with all of my Jewish friends when I knew my parents never could afforded to send me to a summer camp). As a Christian child, Christmas was such a magical time, but now as an adult and mother it’s hard to balance a Christ centered Christmas with American/Santa christmas. Loved your thoughts and I am sure if you ever had a tree it would be absolutely beautiful! 😉 I love that your husband humors you with it 😂❤️

I loved this video! Growing up my parents really attempted to make Chanukah a bigger deal to balance the Christmas celebrations. We had a GIANT dreidel (like you could fit a toddler in it) and my parents would put a gift in it each night. However, I was raised to really participate in lots of cultural traditions without believing in other religions. I was taken caroling and went yearly to one family’s Christmas morning. I knew that it wasn’t my religion but that we could help other folks celebrate and join in for the fun. Now my Christian husband has us with a tree (sometimes I’m a little torn about it) but he says the prayers over the menorah with me every night as well. I love having non-Jewish friends over to celebrate Jewish traditions because enjoying each other’s culture is all part of our amazing world.

If it makes you feel better about the Christmas tree, it's maybe the most Pagan of many Pagan elements of Christmas. In fact it's kind of ironic that in English it is called Christ-mas, as its imagery originates from old Celtic and Norse myths.

Your Christmas hat story was hilarious. My inlaws are Jewish and my husband so I converted. My Jewish mother in law told me she always wanted a Christmas tree! She said her mom, used to sing all the Christmas carols! When my husband was 6 or so his Jewish Dad took him to see Santa. On Christmas we went to the movies too! On Christmas Eve, my husband owned a store, and he and his parents and I all went to Red Lobster on Christmas Eve after they worked hard in their store! Then dont forget, you guys celebrate New Years Eve like we do with Jewish family and friends! Thanks for your delightful videos!

Christmas is exactly/almost a week away. I bet some Jewish families here in the States are already looking forward (or not) to their annual family get together at their favorite Chinese restaurants. This much joked about stereotype actually carries a factual basis. So why do Jewish Americans love Chinese food? Did they mistake wontons for kreplach? Let’s explore this fascinating topic together! I want to say that I love your videos. I became a widow last year and my 3yo son and I celebrate everything by ourselves, as my family of origin is Catholic. Your videos make me excited for everything from Shabbat to all the holidays, and it's not easy for me to be happy or excited about anything anymore. This year though, the last days of Channukah fall on Christmas and my family will, if not participate, then stand there and humor me while I pray and light the candles. I like that Joseph will celebrate all of these holidays (his little "Shaht Shawome" on Friday evening service never fails to make people fawn, LOL) I want him to have that connection to both my family's traditions and our own as a new, two person family. I don't think we will do many presents because he'll be lavished with them by the grandparents already, but I'm going to make everything meaningful and fun. You give great tips on everything, thank you. 🙂

I don’t celebrate Christmas either but the holiday is fun to watch and be a spectator. The hallmark type movies are great to watch. When I go shopping the songs get stuck in my head which makes me go crazy cuz I can’t get them back out! 😂 I love seeing the lights and how people decorate their lawns. At work there’s so much food around, especially cakes and sweets. I feel like I gain 5 lbs on the holidays even though I don’t celebrate! Christmas is very exhausting too for many people. There’s too much to be done. So I guess that folks like us maybe get the best of it.

On Christmas Day I usually get together with my friends who live in Riverdale in the Bronx and we watch basketball all day because the first game starts at noon. Christmas was on Sunday last year and it also happened to be the last night of lighting Hanukkah candles so that was cool. Since Christmas was on Sunday it also meant FOOTBALL. This year it's on Monday so again we'll be able to watch football. On the subway ride up to Riverdale I took off my snow hat and I had a kippah on and a guy decked out in Christmas clothes said to me "Shalom!! Happy Hanukkah!!" and of course I smiled and said thank you. It was a very cool moment in all the craziness that goes on in NYC. I don't recall myself having any sort of Christmas envy. Now at the age of 21 I take pride in being Jewish on Christmas.

I totally grew up with Christmas envy, but in my house it was strictly forbidden. My Father's second wife turned out to be Catholic and all of a sudden my strictly Jewish Father turned into Jewish Santa. He made sure all the Christmas decorations were perfect and my Step Mother's tree was beautiful. He even learned to hang lights on the house. My kids grew up celebrating both holidays and loving it.

I’m converting to Judaism (Reform), and I made my own Chinese food and watched movies and stuff. I haven’t been a Christian in years and haven’t put up a tree in a long time. I find the overall meaning behind Hanukkah (fighting against forced assimilation) to be a wonderful thing especially as I have chosen Judaism for myself.

I put lights around my house and put up my Christmas tree in the living room near the window. I do love getting presents and finding gifts in stockings. Down here, we only see Santa Claus in malls. I would like watch Christmas movies and wrap up presents for my friends. And I do get Chinese food. Chow mein is my favorite. And I do love blue and white too. The balls you were saying are called ornaments. Honestly, I celebrate Christmas and that's okay. But I do love the Hanukkah traditions.

FYI!! The world wants us to think Christmas is about Yeshua/Jesus. Unfortunately is has nothing to do with him. It’s all completely pagan. Every bit of it. And this is coming from a follower of Messiah!! 😊. He would have never celebrated it. Christmas used to be my FAVORITE holiday, but the Father is very clear in Torah NOT TO PARTAKE IN PAGAN TRADITIONS. Yeshua/Jesus would have said the same. He was a kosher eating, Sabbath keeper that did as the Father instructed in Torah and set an example for us to do the same. It is hard being this way, but worth every single bit of it!! Great videos 😘

I completely disagree. Everyone knows that it's unclear when Jesus was born but I honor Christmas as the day I concentrate on the beautiful day He was born. As a Christian, I view Christmas as Holy and while a lot of people just celebrate it in a secular way...I certainly don't so please don't assume about everyone. Hope, joy, peace, love...

@Rina Quartz I recently learned a lot about the reality of christanity... i feel betrayed. Mostly because, regardless of Jeshua being the Messiah or not, most Christians did away with the teachings and instructions of the Old Testament (the Torah? not sure, gotta study more) because of a certain Apostle Paul ... Jeshua never said to do away with anything -Shabbat, kosher food, so on. Most Christians do not even follow the teachings of Jeshua -the guy they're supposedly named after, regardless of his divinity- but man-made teachings, beliefs, rituals, celebrations, and so on, along with idols -Virgin Mary, the saints, angels... Jeshua said clearly to his disciples to pray to the Father in Heaven not to anyone else... and to ask for stuff in his (Jeshua's) name. may God have mercy on us all.
@sapphirecamui6447
@sapphirecamui6447 5 лет назад
@@alabamatrixie7379 True nobody knows when Jeshua (real name of jesus) was born exactly, but it wasn't the beginning of winter/winter solstice. Celebrating Xmas is a Pagan sun worshiping tradition, and not worshiping Father in Heaven the only one deserving worship. Why? because He made the Sun and the Sun didn't make the Father.

There was this show on, quite awhile ago called, " The O.C." stood for Orange County in California. One of the characters was Jewish. He fashioned a yamukha (sorry if i mispelled it) with the colors of a santa hat. It looked like a yamukha, but the trim was white, the center was was n it had a little white ball in the center. The characters also mashed Christmas and Hannukah together, n called it "Christmukka". Hope you found that humerous, don't mean to offend.

My husband's family decorates for winter instead of Christmas. They put up snowflake decorations and lights, and the let it snow decor because they have grandkids that aren't Jewish...and they didn't want those grandkids to be so confused when visiting during the holiday season. They also incorporate some Hanukkah decorations in there with all of the snow themed stuff and of course they buy gifts for the little ones. The grandkids have never felt that they are missing out, and their house stays decorated so beautifully ALL winter since it isn't Christmas decor, its decor celebrating the winter season.

Perhaps you can help me understand something. I (raised Lutheran, a branch of Christianity) am engaged to and living with a Jewish man who appears to enjoy Christmas to some extent when it comes to family and fellowship but finds the signs of Christmas within his house to be abhorrent. He enjoys driving around and seeing Christmas lights and did so as a kid. He tolerates decorating in one room but is worried about people outside of the house seeing colored lights or anything Christmas-y so outside lights are a no go for him. He finds Christmas trees absolutely detestable. When I ask him why he feels this way about a holiday that I love because of it being filled with kindness, hope, happiness, love, and fun, he just says that he doesn't know why he feels this way, just that it's a Jewish thing and I wouldn't understand. I feel that like somewhere down the line he was taught too hate these things but has no further reason for it, but this is just a guess. Can you help me understand where this might be coming from? The other 11 1/2 months out of the year there is not even any discussion of anything like this so I am very confused why Christmas specifically is so off putting. Thanks for any ideas, knowledge, or hints you (or anyone) can provide! Added Note: He had a bar mitzvah. Due to severe dyslexia, while he learned the words to say, he didn't learn what they were. He didn't go to temple nor does he want to now. He doesn't follow the Torah that I know of, doesn't keep kosher, and loosely celebrates the holidays (as in sometimes fasts, sometimes not). This was his family during his upbringing, also. Like next year if I don't have Covid and a sinus infection and am sick for a month and can do things in order to prep for the high holidays, I will do more prep than he ever has which I will try but it will be my first time learning about them so I don't think I will do all that could be done. This makes it all the more confusing as I don't see how it can be religion based. He will say that, "

That’s so funny about Chinese food on Christmas! I’m Jewish and that’s what we used to do! When my son was growing up, he would get a small Chanukah gift every night. We would light the Menorah, sing sons, and just enjoy the bright holiday, like you said, when it was cold and dreary out. Well that was a long time ago, so now I celebrate with one or two Jewish friends,,mostly out for Chinese or Asian food. I want to wish you and your family a very bright, and happy Chanukah this year,,,especially with that beautiful new baby,,,Mazel Tov!! PS, when I was single I used to go to Christmas Mass with my Italian girlfriend,,,and celebrate Christmas with her in NYC. I love all the decorations, the stores, looking at the trees in the Malls, every Christmas,,and the lighting of the gigantic Menorah!!

I don't think you can ask a few Jews or Christians what they do on Christmas and get the same answer from each one. even though I was born Jewish from a Very secular home in Boston. you just can't ignore the beauty of Christmas. it's not only a holiday but its a time of harmony. peacefulness, and Beautiful decorations. and Hanukkah also always come up very close to Christmas every year. Both holidays are a festival of lights. Both are beautiful. so, on Christmas, I'm usually invited to my family (which is partially Christian ) my ex-wife is Christian my kids are Christian. and usually, we have a Huge Christmas turkey. I personally enjoy the Christmas season. I love Christmas music. ALL the famous Christmas movies (my favorite is national lampoons Christmas Vacation. so What is the Big deal? even if you happen to ever be in Israel you'll find MANY Christians homes decorated for Christmas. . I LOVE IT Mary Christmas and happy Hanukkah. may the Lord give us peace in our hearts. and peace on earth. Amen

Hi Marion! I always enjoy your videos so much. I am a Christian, and I found you while searching for RU-vid content about various Jewish holidays and how they are celebrated today. You're a great resource, and I thank you for that. I also thank you for your warm and open spirit. I was taught from childhood to love and respect all Jewish people because they are God's chosen people, so I'm always interested in your perspective on things. Many years ago I worked for an attorney who was Jewish, and she told me that Jewish people always go to the movie theater on Christmas Day as it was usually the only place that was opened. We used to have the most wonderful discussions about our faith and how we practiced it and why. I'll close by sharing a funny story about Christmas Eve in the South. My mother (who is now deceased) and my in-laws lived in the same metropolitan area, so we were always challenged to figure out how to celebrate the holidays with both parents. As I am an only child, it was easier for us to move my celebration of Christmas with my mom to Christmas Eve since my husband's larger family had also always celebrated all the gift giving and huge meal on Christmas Day. By the time my children were born, my mother was over cooking a big meal. So, the challenge became finding a restaurant and going out to eat on Christmas Eve. And, as you well know, the only place you could go was to a Chinese restaurant. So, that became part of our Christmas Eve tradition with my mother. My children were in their early 20s before they realized that EVERYONE did NOT go out to a Chinese restaurant on Christmas Eve when some of their friends thought that was the strangest thing they'd ever heard of! But, we have done it so long now (long after my mother's passing) that now it doesn't seem like Christmas Eve if we don't have Chinese food - I don't know what we'll do this year with the pandemic - I guess we'll order delivery or something! Just thought that story might give you a giggle!

This is so interesting to hear about! I grew up celebrating Christmas and then moved away from it and now to converting to Judaism. I have to say, I dislike Christmas hugely. Haha! And so do my kids, thank G-D! I think it makes it easier that I’m in Australia and so the Christmases we used to celebrate do not even remotely match the movies and what not anyway! I totally used to get Christmas envy when I did celebrate because ours were so un-American! We often join the rest of the country at the beach on Christmas Day, though for us it’s just a regular fun Summer activity that Dad can join in with because he’s got the day off work!

Same here and I love Marion but she really disappointed me hearing that she has Christmas envy. I hate Christmas everything about it along with all other pagan Christian and catholic holidays. It’s all pagan and bondage. I converted from catholic to Christian and finally really woke up and learned the truth. Now I’m a Torah, sabbath keeping Jew who observes His feast days only. I feel so free now not having to celebrate those holidays it feels so good to have those shackles off.
@theclimbingtree
@theclimbingtree 5 лет назад
I personally wouldn't say I'm disappointed in her! I think that it's completely reasonable to experience some envy of a holiday that is so hyped up in our society (particularly in America I've noticed). Alma Acosta, you and I have the benefit of having experienced it and then moved away from! We've seen the grass on both sides, and know which we prefer!! :-D
@SouLovelyRoses

The Climbing Tree I guess but it was never a big thing for us plus my family was poor so I didn’t grow up expecting elaborate gifts like most kids now a days do. But still I don’t understand the envy I would expect her to hate it but I guess your right I guess she doesn’t see it for what it is where as you say I had the opportunity to experience it and all that it really is and now that I now the truth I really see it for what it is and I hate it and wish others could see it for what it really is along with all of its mumbo jumbo that is accompanied by it.

My parents weren’t well off and I was the youngest of 4 kids. I had a friend when I was in grammar school and she was youngest of 7 kids. Her family used to regift items and I remember her telling me how many peasants she had under the tree vs my not so many. But to me it’s about giving.

So, you never got your Christmas unicorn?! Hehe (me neither). It is frustrating how much the schools focus on Christmas all December from a parenting perspective. Our tendency is to build a blanket nest and watch LotR or the Hobbit on our projector and make our own Chinese food and popcorn. We do have white garland lights around the window all December to bring more light on this darkest month.

Just found. Working on a Christmas song "Christmas for Everyone". That said. I was raised Catholic, altar boy, worked in film TV Hollywood. With the exception of the name, Christmas, it's a holiday that's been around for ever. Long before the Catholic Church took it in the direction they did. It's actually a festival for Saturn/Odin (gods of the ancient times) but as you know, everyone feels that nice inside vibe that happens on that day (still researching). Parents always got Chinese on the eve. A tradition I started out here 😉 I could go on and on about seeing Jewish candles/menorah growing up then vanishing before we (children, had logic, still. ....the holiday is one of the few that "can" be celebrated by anyone if they are on or from this planet. 😉 (family secrets? 🧐🤔, mom was part Hungarian so . ....One day I'll get a dna test. Ha ha. Until then, if your reading this and have a tradition you that's out of the main stream, feel free to post your experience. Stay safe all . .. 🥰🤗

Oh I loved your story about the Santa hat. I’m new to your channel so I’m binging all of your videos! I always think of the Christmas decorations as non religious, even being a Christian myself. I put everything decoration and Santa related as make believe because it’s trademarked by Coca Cola. A lot of people don’t go to church on Christmas and have trees, but they don’t even have the standard ornaments…and some people even leave the tree up until Valentine’s Day. I like what you all do on Christmas…I’m always over the food because it’s very similar to that of thanksgiving…so Chinese seems refreshing!!!

This was a great video and you are so sweet. Yes, Christmas is a really fun and overwhelming holiday. As far as the gift level, I think it really depends on each family. The newest trend is to really scale down the gifts. But my kids get a ton of presents and they are that ultimate level. Although I think most of their birthdays gifts are a bit scaled down. But it really depends on the family. I had to laugh because a few years ago my young son had Hanukkah envy. When I told him they have eight nights of Hanukkah and get a gift for eight nights. He responded wait eight nights of presents for Jewish kids and only one morning of Christmas gifts. I said yes. Then he blurted our I want to be Jewish. I just laughed and I said it did not work that way.

I’ve enjoyed all of your Hanukah videos. We are Christian, but we never had big Christmas gifts. For several years my dad worked in a department store as head of their maintenance department and would either forget to buy gifts or run out of time. Those few years our gifts were mostly left over employee gifts that no one had taken that he grabbed on his way home...as an 11 year old I did not appreciate the alarm clock, picture frame or T-shirt with their store logo all over it as a gift. Now I laugh thinking back on those memories 😂 We also grew up eating latkes, my grandmother was of German decent so I don’t know if it’s just a German thing as well or maybe they were Jewish generations ago. I’m going to have to go track down her old recipes and see if we have it, it’s been years since we made them but I’m craving some after seeing them in your vlogs! ☺️

Just because you “enjoy” it doesn’t mean you believe in it...I think how you deal with Christmas is perfect (and as you said, typical😂). Growing up in Brooklyn NY I lived and worked in a very religious Jewish community-Sephardic, Hasidic, etc....(Dentistry) although where we lived was (and still is I believe) a very mixed community. I was the token Christian in my office who received all the non-Kosher gifts the office received around the holidays and I loved it!
