This video provides how-to instructions on jibing a cruising sailboat, and should be of interest to both learning and experienced sailors. The instructions focus on a safe and repeatable maneuver, suitable for everyday use. Shortcuts and advanced techniques for racing may come in a later video.

There aren't many RU-vid sailers posting hands on "how it happens" videos, and yours are just spot on. Keep the videos rolling please.

Thank you for your channel and videos. I recently went from sailing dinghy's to purchasing a C&C 27. Your videos are straight forward, everything is explained in detail and you really focus on the basic yet necessary skills needed for sailing a larger (to me) boat. Thank you and please continue to produce more videos!

Rich Thank you for your kind words. A video like this takes a lot of time to assemble and it is wonderful to hear that someone appreciates it!

Your films are very professional and informative. I was looking for such a channel for a long time and finally found it! You are best. The only feler is music, sometimes drowns the captain's precious comments and command's , and every word is important for the novice sailor. Please continue your series, especially training videos. Best wishes

very useful videos.I would either lose or lower the background music when narrating, just a bit distracting.other than that, brilliant.

Great videos thankyou for taking the time to make them as they are very useful to new sailors like me. I will make one comment though, the music is very distracting especially when you are talking and i find myself drawn to the music instead of your instruction. It could be just me but i do see other comments regarding it. As i say, great videos but, shame about the music.

I would like to support all the positive comments with one condition. Lose the music please. Its like night club music, not appropriate and it drowns out some of your words.

Thank you for your efforts in making this great video. If I could just agree, the “club” music detracts from the lesson I’m trying tolerance. I want to listen to you and concentrate, not dance! The lesson is the entertainment for me, I don’t need thumping music to keep my little brain happy.

Excellent instructional video with demonstrations of each step performed by the crew. The only comment I have is your music (while it is lovely) is too loud. Sometimes it's hard to hear the words.

1, Stand by or prepare to Jibe. 2, Helm to weather (turning the boat) 3, Jibe ho, as the stern goes through the wind and headsail moves across the deck. The boom should be much tighter particularly in stronger winds if you want to keep your rig.
@SailFanatics
@SailFanatics 7 лет назад
Paul, thanks for your comments and for watching. I do think that "Helm to weather" is somewhat vague. With wheel steering as tin the video, the wheel is turned to leeward. When teaching in a Colgate 26 with a tiller, I tell the students "tiller away from the boom" for a jibe, "tiller towards the boom" for a tack, instructions they find easy to follow. As to the boom being adequately centered, perhaps the issue is when I look up at the boom in the video, the GoPro camera has a very wide angle that makes boom look farther out than it is. Checking the angle of the mainsheet on the traveler provides a better view of how centered the boom actually is.

Hiya. Thanks for responding. I appreciate that much of what I suggested was traditional sailing terminology and I am not someone who sticks to tradition. I am always in favour of making things easier for students. But Jibe ho has a specific meaning and has always been the instruction to the crew to bring the headsail across as the stern goes through the wind. It is what Jibe ho means. Using jibe ho in the way you do is just wrong and will be very confusing to students who have learned the true meaning of Jibe ho or who work with other sailors who have a true understanding of the instruction Jibe ho. What do you call out to let the crew know it is time to bring the headsail across the deck?
@SailFanatics
@SailFanatics 7 лет назад
Paul, "Jibe-ho" is simply the helmsman's warning that he/she is then turning the stern thru the wind. It warns the crew to be ready to ease the mainsheet after the boom jibes...If you treat the command as an instruction to the crew to handle the jib, which the wind blow across the foredeck anyway, thats fine for you, but perhaps not a common use. But to each their own, I guess a term as universal as jibe-ho needs no more discussion here.

Excellent video showing how it's done and mistakes to be corrected. Just wish the unnecessary boom boom beat was left off.

I really enjoy all your videos-however, the music is always too loud without editing while you're speaking. And I feel that you're speaking is important to teach the techniques you're addressing. Please either turn down the disco beats, or edit them out while you're actually talking the the crew in those parts....

Jibing? An instructional video about Jibing, really? If you are trying to put your sailing yacht's stern through the wind, then you will be performing a Gybe. Not a jibe.
