Synthetic coumarin, lavender, Sir Thomas Sean Connery and the smell of saliva are the most common things you hear mentioned when people bring up Aime Guerlain's scent from the 19th century, the mysteriously named Jicky. Considered to be the first modern scent, it definitely made an impression on me as a fragrance enthusiast and today, we're taking a look at it, through the perspective of fresh scents.

I smelled Jicky quite often since the 1960s, because my grandma (R.I.P. 🥺) wore it.

I also detect similarities between Jicky and Eau D'Hermes. Thanks for sharing your beautiful extrait.

Hello dear Florian! This was enjoyable to listen to as I got ready for work today. I learned a lot. I was able to try Jicky, and a wonderful assortment of some other older Guerlain scents I had not tried (thanks to Sebastian!). Jicky is really the only scent from the house that I don’t love. The halitosis smell you describe comes through in a big way for me. I tend lo love human or animalic notes but this one just isn’t for me though I love + respect it!! Thanks for all the great intel + hope you are well.

hi! I'm very well, thanks for asking! Very interesting about Jicky. I'm curious, do you detect any Jicky DNA in Shalimar? Especially the halitose thing. For me, it's become sort of a way to tell the Shalimars apart, I have no idea if that's correct or not, but it just happens. Ever managed to try Mouchoir de Monsieur?

Haven't tried Jicky Extrait yet. Too bad they are discontinuing these beautiful bottles 😒

Yes, the bottles are sadly discontinued and most probably they will return as special editions overpriced releases. Like they did with Kadine. Such a shame.

I'm curious how strong is the civet? Does it project or is it close to the skin? When I first tried Shalimar (edp not extrait) I noticed a very strong hallitose sweet smell on the final dry down for my skin. I wonder if it has to do with the mix of coumarin and vanillin. I have smelled castoreum in Oud wood intense by Tom Ford and that is so strong and synthetic that is headache inducing. If Jicky has synthetic civet, it would be headache inducing. I have also gotten a headache from the "leather" in Chanel's Cuir de Russie extrait.

I wouldn’t classify Jicky as a civet smell, synthetic or otherwise. The fragrance is not powerful or in any way headache inducing, it is soft and discrete.

@@MemoryFlo Oh I see. Guerlain's extraits might be better than Chanel's eventhough Chanel extraits are quite discreet too

I don’t know if they are better, certainly it’s a personal preference of mine. In terms of performance, I think they are the same. It really depends on the fragrance. Jicky is discrete even in edp format. LHeure Bleue and Mitsouko are quite the opposite

@@MemoryFlo That's quite interesting. Probably due to the oakmoss in Mitsouko. When I used Pour Monsieur the oakmoss lasted all day. What about Shalimar extrait? I've never tried the Shalimar extrait but I would think the iris would increase the longevity

i have a 1989 bottle of the edt, and i dont get civet like you may in an old chanel or in amouage gold man for example. i think people naming a civet note may just have trouble explaining what theyre smelling because its certainly an odd yet strangely comforting scent. its quite well behaved and not heavy or loud. other people will pick up a not-sweet natural vanilla a'la shalimar in your sillage (and if you smell the sprayer after the bottle has been sitting unused) but if you stick your sprayed wrist in your face, the vanilla is buried under green and lavender.

Frumos!

Multumesc frumos pt apreciere.
