What got you started tying your own stuff? I'm just dipping my toes in because I live in an extremely pressured area and regular bass jigs with weed guards are my favorite lure to throw - Dirty Jigs work, but I'd like to custom tailor my sizes and colors to my waters.. I also haven't seen any quality hair jigs I can throw for 5-+lb largies - I need a thicker wire hook than I can find around here. is that something you've experimented with? Results = more success (assuming technique is solid)? Also, are you aware of any Fly Shops near Wash., DC?
I got started when I inherited a vise from my uncle when I was 12. I was very intrigued with the idea of creating something lifelike that could trick a fish so I experimented for years. (and still do to this day) Anyway, as far as bass jigs go, there are plenty of folks on Facebook lure making and lead pouring groups that make great heads with a thick-wire hook and weed guards. Then you can get protec powder paints in whatever color you need. I actually have notice more success on custom jigs that match the bait that the fish are eating in nature. I’m a firm believer in hand-tied jigs because they can be so much different than any other bait on the market. Hope this helps!
Take it from exerience....if you have this in your blood you will become addicted to tying. Adjust to spending money accordingly.....trust me you will! Great video Mustache.
Well, I watched these backwards, as that is how they came through. I must say, even though you never addressed the fly you tied, I noticed that you used a marker to match the jighead. Great idea.
Yup I like the selection fly fish food has,, and the items i ordered showed up on time,, my problem is i didn't order enough as i am out and in need to make another order
Great Vedios!! Do you still use the same vice or did you upgrade? If you upgraded what brand and model did you buy. I'm useing a non rotary cheap vice that doesnt hold the hook well. I bought this years ago and I really need to upgrade. Thanks!
I still use the Renzetti Traveler. It holds up like a champ so there’s no need to upgrade. Definitely get a rotary when you can, even if it’s a cheap one!
