Currently reading These Truths, wonderful book. I would like to argue to LePore, to all of us, that historians are, in a sense, biologists who can conduct experiments. Not directly perhaps, but their work, history, honest, truthful history can, and I think should, be applied directly to current events, public debate and argument over policies. Distorted versions certainly have been. The work of historians is part of the scientific process, observation, measurement, hypothesis, testing of how we govern ourselves. They do the observation and measurement part. These Truths rings true to our times because it connects us to human nature and behavior and the corrupting aspects of power by connecting, reconnecting us to our founders with myth and superstition and bias stripped away. It's up to us to apply these truths and continue the experiments by improving on them and continuing to seek a more perfect, or at least ever improving, union. Bravo, Jill LePore.
