seviren s well back then they didn't worry about genres and labels and it was pretty much metal or not metal to them back then. Trash is what influenced these bands so it would make sense.
For those who argue about this being called 'thrash metal' It's because, back at that time (I supose this video recording came from the mid to late-80s, maybe early 90s) it was very common to miscall music genres, especially from the ones who came from the underground, actually, a lot of people who were into that kind of stuff didn't really knew how to call them, grindcore was often labeled as hardcore, fastcore, thrashcore, and others, and death metal was commonly know as just thrash metal (sometimes they even called it grindcore too). Remember that internet wasn't available and the only way to know about this names was by mouth, so it wasn't rare to hear someone tagging Cannibal Corpse as 'thrash metal' or someone tagging Sodom as 'death metal'. I'm sure that Jim knew about this but he called it 'thrash metal' so the audience could understand the joke by using a term that they could familiarize with (since thrash was at his peak by that time).
I did read the comment. And I certainly agree! Let alone, we had just witnessed the birth of Metalcore! Spread doom, spread doom everywhere! Don't forget to play the mods!!!
He probably said Thrash Metal because it would make more sense to the mainstream audience, i mean how many people would know what the fuck he was talking about if he called it Grindcore?
Exactly The Grindcore term was around since the late 80s, but how many people were really using it? In the mid 90s, if you tell somebody that you listen to Thrash Metal or Death Metal, you have a good idea of what it :::might::: sound like. The same would be true if you walked into a record store and asked for either of the two genres. The one thing that the internet has caused is the creation of sub-sub-sub-genres that nobody gives a fuck about. I'm not saying that's the case with Grindcore, but the origins do come from hardcore punk, thrash, and/or death metal. Even the sub-genres of punk are guilty of this. (sorry for the side rant)
hyperdsg I think you're misunderstanding what I said. Re-read it and you'll see that I'm referring to the term Grindcore, not how long Napalm Death has been around. ;-)
Wolfgang Von Poserkila Hold up there a minute, the "mainstream" at this point thought nothing about metal at all. They probably thought Metallica were the heaviest grunge band, metal was GnR and thrash or death metal was Pantera or Sepultura heavy. Even metalheads don't define subgenres properly until after the fact. Lost count of how many old articles list "Reign in Blood" as one of the first Death Metal albums. You're right though, would've made more sense to me at the time. Took me forever to be able to hear the difference between brutal death and grindcore.
Yes Jim Carry is indeed a death metal fan. Cannibal Corpse is one of his favorite bands, and he thought it'd be great if the band appeared in Ace Ventura, so he requested them to be in it, and the director agreed.
***** Its the music that gets us going, but lyrics do complement the understanding of it. I've heard of instrumental bands with song names that just seem too specific. Sometimes it's the feel, but other times, I wish they'd just throw out some random kickass name that doesn't have to have meaning just for awesome sake, like "Crackerjack Raggedy Pop" or "Perpetual Atomicitation" or something. But, when it comes to hip hop and (mostly underground/metal/punk) rock music, they tend to have lyrics that can matter and doesn't focus on the mainstream (the industry is WAAAY TOO FUCKING OVERSATURATED with love songs (sex, make ups, break ups, cheating, dance-with-yous, girl names, etc.), then there's just party songs). Not all rap is lyrically bullshit like about 98% of what's on radio.
I fucking love this guy so damn much...huge death metal fan and all, but he does it so well hahahah, and that hysterical laugh at the end, this guy is INSANE hahahaha
yoe91 I know. I love Him Carrey. He inspired me since I was a kid. Like a lot of the funny things I do are similar to him to this day. Love death metal too. \,,/
Saulo Demian I've been around the metal scene for decades, today I don't give a shit, just listen to metal, old school ones and you shouldn't care about tagging metal and labelling it. It was stupid before you were born and it is stupid now. It was good for a while to make a point to what metal you like and dislike, but in the end it became for the sheer reason of making kids ego bigger coz they "know metal types!"
Death metal came from thrash and was originally just more growling vocals, down tuned guitars and more than thrash metal. This was probably early on in the 80s when genres such as groove and death where in thrash
This is already one of the greatest videos on RU-vid I feel like the expressions Jim Carrey shows after the bit are kind of underrated: 1:12 - 1:20 - cartoonish laughing fit 1:21 - 1:25 - snooty self-laughing satire 1:26 - 1:29 - deadpan murder mode 1:29 - end - all chilled out like "what did I do again?"
***** Very true. Thrash was used for everything from Anthrax to Metallica to Kreator to Sodom to Pantera, even though now we would probably be using different sub-sub-sub-genre terms for each one of them - though really, who actually gives a crap? Those were the days when speed and thrash were considered different styles, for crying out loud, and Pantera was called "power-groove metal"! I'm not kidding, I was there :)
He probably said "thrash" just so the audience of this mainstream talkshow would understand what he meant. I've spoken to Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse about him and apparently it is true that he requested they be in the movie and even specifically asked for Hammer Smashed Face to be played. He spent a lot of time on set hanging out with them and kept in touch for a year or two afterwards. Also Cameron Diaz was in the front row at one of their shows when some celebrity asked them to play a Hollywood party.
Gaurav Cz Barnes was good in CC, his material with SFU was awful imo, so yes as non-serious as Jim Carrey is a vocalist, his vocals are automatically better.
Yeah really, you guys sound like a bunch of broads. "NAPALM DEATH IS GRINDCORE, NOT THRASH METAL! JIM CARREY SUCKS!!"... Jim Carrey is the one who put Cannibal Corpse in Ace Ventura. Probably the first death metal band that got mainstream exposure. I doubt they were looking for that, but it was cool Jim did that for them. I never seen a band that heavy when i first saw that movie at 10, 11 years old.
I've heard several things about that, I'm not sure if he actually did that as other pages have said that he didn't and hadn't even heard of them before.
StahliCell They mean metalcore or post hardcore. No need to genre bash. Go listen to both old and new emarosa. Same categories. There's always gonna be shitty artists in any genre.
***** Listened now to Earth Crisis. I don't like them at all. For me top metalcore bands are Parkway Drive, As I Lay Dying, The Browning... I'll try listening to Converge.
***** Nope, even Converge are far away from what I've expected. I can see why I've never listened to them. It's not even metalcore.... I forgot to mention August Burns Red, THAT'S a TOP metalcore band
there's difference between sarcasm and impersonating something you like, like how Ariana Grande impersonating Celine Dion. i think Jim listening Napalm Death and likes it.
i love thrash metal. also like Napalm Death. still how can anyone be mad at Jim Carrey? he is funny no matter what he says. just the sound of his voice makes me smile :-) very funny as always ^_^
***** Yes, I agree grindcore is death metal. It is a subgenre of death metal. There is no difference at all really they are the same. The only difference is that the founding grindcore bands where punk bands who decided to start playing death metal opposed to the majority of death bands who are derived mostly from thrash and doom.
Loving the guy who said "Good point, how long can these bands keep their angst?". Well, if we're talking Napalm Death, the answer is at least 15 albums and 33 years.
Yeah mate, he is only joking. I don't think the guys on Napalm Death take this as a insult or something. I came to this when i saw it reposted on the Napalm Death facebook page hahaha.
To you who gets mad about him calling Napalm Death Trash Metal, you have to understand that back in the day people didn't sort genres as much as they do now. Even Anthrax called themselves heavy metal.
How funny. Because the first time I heard Napalm Death, and Mike (Barney) Greenway on vocals, it was like shock and awe, I couldn't belive there was somebody singing like this. Of course I basically said the same thing when I heard Lemmy of Motorhead sing. The stuff kinda grew on me
At 1:06 , I love how he, by running his hand thru hair, switches from "casual waiting for the laughter to stop" to "unleash the mad genius of panto"...
metalmusician6798 True, but given when this was recorded and the fact that it was very new to many people, outsiders likely weren't familiar with the terms at first~.
haha how funny that Jim Carrey wonders about death metal bands slowing down and singing beautiful songs lol , Paradise Lost went through that transition lol
