@@ZephKin I just dont think their are enough guys that know the basics with the amount of botches on aew its embarrassing to be television based wrestling when compair to just about any product historically on cable tv whether, wwf/e, wcw, hell even nxt which is developmental if developmental wrestlers were botching that's one thing but this is Tony's main roster people if I can use that term and to god damn many are horrible in the ring just tape the show and edit the production, and you cant let people do what they want on television based wrestling company which would cause more injuries even wwe big e got injuried in s throwaway match ina spot no one would have remember had he not got injuried think 4 weeks going into wrestlemania and this is wwe a much safer smarter working environment
Gimmick matches seem to replace the story lines. Spam is the name of the game. Whether it's spamming finishers, cuss words, gimmick matches, new factions, debuts, or buzz words like "dream match", "ppv quality" or "game changer". If they saved them to end a feud or for PPV/TV specials it wouldn't be so blatant tho.
Also spamming middle fingers. Like every other wrestler flips off the opponent in the finish or promo and it kinda stops having an effect when you see it so often
When Cornette was reading the list of all those gimmick matches, I was waiting for "And a Partridge in a Pear Tree!!!! It sounded like he was singing a Christmas Carol
When I played GM mode in the old Smackdown games, I would spam gimmick matches for ratings. Smackdown would still kick my ass with a five star one on one normal match of Undertaker vs Sylvain Grenier.
Is that the “Ready to Rumble” or cage from Hogan & Macho vs TAEH match from Uncensored 1996. The Alliance to End Hulkamania…4 horseman and Dungeon of Doom
As opposed to back in Jim's heyday: "Y'all show up if ya got the guts. Meet ya at The Armory 7:30 Friday night, Jack! Shine up them belts good, Jack, because they're coming home to us, Daddy! Y'all don't belong in the same ring with us, Jack, and we'll prove it this Friday night!"😂🎤🤼♂️B.W.
The core problem is that gimmick matches should be treated as extraordinary exceptions to standard ones, and instead they're presented as run-of-the-mill. If a wrestling promotion were going for credibility, then 1 on 1 and 2 on 2 would be emphasized as the baseline standard that all contests are supposed to be. Gimmick matches would then only come about because of unique circumstances and with the idea that there's no way that the issues between these people on the roster can be resolved unless it happens in that fashion. A Texas Death Match should be something where you have public statements by Tony Khan or someone in authority saying they don't want to have it given the serious injury risk, but that the two people involved have proven incapable of adhering to the rules in a standard match, so with great reluctance the match is being sanctioned. Have a scenario where a babyface agrees to not challenge for a title for a year if he can get the heel in cage for the championship match because a major variation like that isn't freely applied. Make the gimmick something that's earned, not given away.
It boggles my mind that AEW doesn't understand this. They seem to add stipulations completely at random lately. Like one day you're going to tune in and it'll be Statlander vs Riho in an Iron Man match for no reason at all with no buildup. Or they might copy the Elimination Chamber in a match with no title on the line with a group of guys who aren't feuding with each other. It's just out of nowhere, for no reason.
@MerelyAFan, The problem with "Booker of the year" $ mark Khan's booking of the talent, is that he starts off every "feud" with gimmick matches & then by the time you got to the PPV, he'd book the talent involved in a regular match which is obviously ILLOGICAL & BACKWARDS BOOKING OF THE TALENT.
Ultimately the problem is that AEW's core fan base in likely in favor of all this. What Khan doesn't understand (or care to understand) is that this very fan base is comprised of something in the region of a minute fraction of 1% of the entire population, most likely.
That crowd would eat up whatever is thrown out there. If TK booked more regular matches leading up to a gimmick ppv match or a big match every few months to settle a feud, the crowd would love it. There aren't that many gimmick matches in NJ, same fanbase.
I know Jim and Brian didn’t watch it, but oddly enough, Deeb and Shida had the best gimmick match of the night. I would have rather they had an I quit match, but I was just so glad to get Deeb on tv (First tv match since March 4th and she’s their best all around women’s performer). Shida could have done better to sell the knee, but she did a good job and they tried hard to make sense of it. Far more selling in this match than most gimmick matches. I also liked that they didn’t get crazy with the props. No houses made of chairs, no stacked tables. No thumbtacks.
Agreed, I liked it surprisingly. And it actually made some sense for them to have it, because now it’s just pure hatred between those two, but still I hope they done with this angle and go their separate ways for now. And kudos to Shida for her attire from all Men of Culture out there.
The finish was fantastic with straight ahead psychology. Deeb destroys Shida’s leg, applies submission to leg, Shida taps while screaming. Main eventers shoulda taken note.
@@Guy4318 Agreed. Every time Deeb used a weapon, it was with a purpose: To destroy Shida’s knee to set up the submission. She took a brief period to inflict pain and rub it in, but then got back down to business. The way she bashed the knee into the chair repeatedly is a spot she has done in previous matches, but made even more sense when doing it on the chair.
Tiny Khan's massive attempt to debut someone every week and have a gimmick match to pop the ratings is failing him more and more and it's glorious to watch. They can not and will not draw new viewers the more they try to be ECW lite and except for the absolute diehards of AEW who hate everything that WWE and Vince stand for are even watching anymore.
AEW need to promote matches with substance rather than just gimmick matches to get a cheap pop. CM Punk vs MJF fued was great not just because of the storytelling but also because of the matches and the fact that Punk gave his reasoning as to why he wants a dog collar match against MJF and that is to humiliate him and make sure he doesn't try to run away from him. Now if you take the Hardys vs Butcher and the Blade, why the fuck these two teams had this match? They've yet to fued and face each other in other matches yet for some reason they had a tables elimination match which was moronic because even if one guy gets eliminated he doesn't have a reason to go to the back because no DQ, so what's the point of doing an elimination match if there are no consoquences if you stay even if you're eliminated? Shit like that is one of the many things that hurt AEW. They need to include these kind of matches to make sense depending on the fued.
Jim nails it here. Builds to ppv matches now absolutely suck. I'm 39 so I can recall late 80s into and thru the 90s WWF storytelling leading to the showdowns at ppv. It's night and day the difference between then and now.
I think the key problem is that since the Attitude Era, bookers or writers or whoever the creative staff are don't realize the concept of building to the big matches. It can be at a PPV or a TV special or just a big episode of the weekly TV like the Grand Slam shows from last year. But the whole idea of wrestling is you build up interest in a match and then you have it, preferably where you can get a big PPV buyrate or a large gate attendance. This isn't even a wrestling concept. A movie will establish characters and plot and then usually pay off the most exciting scene at the end. TV shows will build up a storyline throughout the season and have the big payoff in the season finale. This is routine storytelling. But instead it's just "let's try this" or "let's try that" in a vain hope that people will keep watching if each episode is full of wild stuff. Or it's just having no patience or attention span and thinking "it would be cool to do this" and thus doing it as soon as possible. But the concept should be having a big show in mind, thinking about what matches to put on it, and then using the weekly show to set up the circumstances where people want to see the matches booked for that big show. Everything should revolve around this goal. In AEW's case the big shows would be the PPVs, the Battle of the Belts specials (which for some dumb reason they've treated as throwaways) and some key Dynamite episodes where the spacing makes sense to not go too many months without something noteworthy happening.
the funny thing is that wwe did crazy random stuff in the 90s and a lot of the attitude era ppvs had zero build up except one or two main event matches, but the reason they had so many people watching was because the characters were strong and the wwe has always been character work over wrestling, if aew is going to continue the gimmick stuff then at least focus on the characters
The elimination chamber could be used as good example. When it first got introduced in 2002, I could tell you the ppv, all the participants, and could almost go down to the order they got eliminated. Even in 2003 with Goldberg, or whey they brought it back for New Years Revolution 2005. Ever since 2008, when every year they needed to do both Raw and smackdown elimination chamber by the time it rolled around next year with two more it was already getting out of place. Now it’s literally the title of a pay per view and everyone knows every year we get it. Just watered it down so much
No stip has been watered down more than Hell in a Cell. 25, 20, even 15 years ago when you heard those 4 words, there was a sense of dread and anticipation you felt knowing what was coming. I haven't felt that with Hell in a Cell in a LONG time, save for Taker-HHH.
@@EmmettXIV Honestly even MITB has lost a lot of its charm. Not so much the concept but look at how so many of the winners have been booked over the last several years. Save for Rollins and Ambrose that briefcase hasn't gotten anyone over for years.
I really enjoyed 2017’s Elimination Chamber, wasn’t watching much wrestling when the others came out. But even in my comparatively limited experience, that’s it. None of the other chamber matches have left much of an impression (minor exception for the face-off between Kofi and Bryan, but that was the only memorable bit).
Tony Khan is a Laaaaaazy Booker he has at least 2 gimmick matches on one of his shows every week or 1 on each show between Dynamite and Rampage It's Sad how Bad the booking in AEW is and only gets a pass cause WWE is Boring and like watching paint dry.
Insane Tony behind the wheel going after Corny reminds me of when Bison was driving the big rig to run Ryu down at the end of the Street Fighter 2 Animated Movie.
The idea of those matches is to settle the feud once and for all that the rivalry is so intense and needs the likes of the steel cage, hell in a cell, street fight to end it
Thank you. What sense was there to have the 1st match between the Pinnacle and the Inner Circle be a Blood and Guts match to then set up a Stadium Stampede?
If you have a "special" match every other show (much less between Wed and Fri) then they aren't special anymore. Oh look - fake barbed wire on a ladder...again
I do like many of the new wrestlers, but my family and I just can't relate to their lame characters. I know very few of their names. 15 years ago, I knew all of their names.
I definitely love gimmick matches, even some being on a regular weekly show every now and then, but overuse of them makes me hate them. Like with WWE, the current era of gimmick matches being ppv names just ruins the match type for me. Taker and triple H end of an era hell in a cell at WRESTLEMANIA: good usage. Seth vs the fiend hell in a cell at hell in a cell: so stupid and other than the whole "what does it take to beat the fiend," there was no real need of this in the feud
Smackdown Hotel as an AirBnB? I can believe that, surprised with all the money WWE has they haven't actually gone ahead and cross-promoted with them to create that. Might even last longer than that old WWF bar and grill in New York they used to run lol
Gimmick matches should be seldom and reserved only for those intense rivalries. A good normal one on one or tag team match is always better while also protecting the wrestlers from needlessly injuring themselves. Love or hate wwe's focused on more traditional matches but atleast they're doing something to avoid their stars from taking unnecessary risk and injuries.
Exactly Punk and MJF nailed this the right way. They had an amazing story, have a normal standard match, continues to further the story which leads to a logical gimmick match. Everyone else has a gimmick match just because
The same people who critique WWE for gimmicking PPVs like Hell in a Cell or TLC seem to be ok with AEW applying the same concept to their weekly TV shows
As bad as WWE is these days, at least they still know to stick to the basics. Take that quick Drew/Sami feud for example. Regular match, Sami ran away. Lumberjack match, Sami got away again. Culminated in a steel cage match and the babyface went over. Simple but effective.
I know WWE isn't as good as it used to be but even then, gimmick matches made/make some sense there because it doesn't happen until maybe the 2nd or 3rd match of the feud if the feud went that long. One on one match...one on one match...gimmick match. I want to give WWE props for that but I also dislike the modern day gimmick ppvs like Hell in a Cell, Elimination Chamber, etc (the matches are forced now versus just being brought up at random for a random ppv or a big event ppv back in the day) because you have to have a man's and a woman's one. Wrestling would be more exciting if maybe one show had cage match and then maybe a few months down the road, another cage match for a women's feud or something. Less is more
I can just see Tony in his office geeked to his gills. Spinning a RAW roulette wheel and it lands on "normal" wrestling match. He pauses confused. Proceeds to do another Hollywood, and spins again. It lands on barbed wire ladder match! He giggles excitedly bobbing his head repeatedly saying "yeah baby! That's the one! Whoooo! *Sniff*"
*AEWs Newest Gimmick Match:* 1 on 1 match with actual wrestling, no weapons, no tables, no chairs, and a pin that has to take place in the ring and counted by the actual ref.
I also think it’s a wild concept where nowadays you’re using gimmick matches to build to other gimmick matches (NXT using ladder matches for the team to get the advantage in War Games matches for example) or putting gimmick matches within gimmick matches (steel cage or ladder matches in 2 out of 3 falls/ best of 5 series).
I heard there going to have a battle royal in a cage where they could use ladders and some one has to get put threw a table and they are going to have it in Texas
One: Adam Page v Brian Danielson rematch. Page never rematched Jericho, Jericho never rematched Moxley, Moxley never rematched Omega, Omega never rematched Page.
Mr. Booker of the Year needs to lay off the Adderall. Maybe hit some downers, drink a few beers and read Rock Rims San Francisco Book. Because this is taking schizophrenia to a new level.
Even Vince McMahon, since 40 years in the business, his nowadays product still not good. And other person want to compete with him ? Want to sink down WWE ? Come on....
They (nerdy audience, that loves games and don't care about wrestling.. except brought game reference sign to the arena to get notice on BotchaMania) also, a few ROIDS, RAGE & RANT PODCASTER on RU-vid that always bash wwe all the time, still pretend AEW don't suck. That's make me sick. They dont like WWE, it's fine. But they pretend this Sports Based Wrestling is legit, it's totally shame.
Check out no marks allowed wrestling on RU-vid with your host JayBird where we talked about current wrestling and UFC. Low-budget high-quality no marks allowed wrestling on RU-vid with your host Jaybird and little Khabib
Really dilutes the product. When Taker threw Mankind off that cage. Those ladder matches with the Dudley boys, edge and Christian, hardy boys. It's their own fault. Unnecessary segments and bad bad promos.
There's so many gimmick and 6 man matches....that I literally get stoked over a regular single fall match. 😐 Like...I have no desire or interest to see thumb tacks, ladders, tables, or cages for about a good 12 months in AEW. Nothing more than 2 man tag matches and one fall only for singles. That's it. They're exhausting it that much.
The “[blank] on a pole match,” a Vince Russo booking staple. I’ll never forget the Judy Bagwell on a pole match in WCW (no matter how hard I try). 🤦♂️
I'm not defending AEW but WWE is just as guilty of this, if not more so. They do gimmick matches just because it's the name of the PPV. Let's start a feud one week then put them in a Hell in a Cell match just because that's the PPV, or a TLC.
All gimmick matches have become shit..no heat to anything..nothing new. I just don't give AF. Damn, how I had such high hopes for wrestling 3 years ago, and it went straight to shit.
Sitting here watching old wcw matches, and I'm thinking of aew not wanting to be a wcw, but, to me, that absolutely what they should be doing. Wcw's problems wasn't the problem, it was many other issues, but this is wayyyy better than modern wrestling.
Gimmick Matches are so overused in AEW now that they are not special anymore. It´s just a cheap try to get more viewers. Not to forget that a lot of those Matches have People involved who either shouldn´t compete in these Matches anymore (Hardyz) or People who cant work and do risky moves that could injure themselves or their Opponent.
Yes AEW is over using gimmick matches and I'm not trying to excuse them but WWE did it first, with their gimmick ppvs just because you're challenging for or defending a title in November you have to do it in hell in a cell, or if you're champion in February you have to defend in the elimination chamber, AEW has obviously taken things further but it was vinny mac who started the trend that tony is trying to out do
Yea, it was very child wrestling on the trampoline style promo when sky wanted to rematch Sami and then Sami is just like fine you want a rematch? Ladder match! Wtf? He just wanted to play razor Ramon!
They actually don't have a lot of triple threat matches or even situations in AEW. They probably should since it's called for in a few instances. Way to many interferences and run ins instead of just getting all 3 in the ring for the blow off.
AEW is in the perfect position for gimmick matches if they relegate them to ppv, they don't have a ppv every month, so that's plenty of time to build a feud to a ppv blow off gimmick match.
